Out of 20,000 schools in the country we were shortlisted tothe nal 6. The winner was chosen at an exclusive awardsceremony in London on Friday 5th July. It was a spectacular event with over 600 guests in attendance, includinggovernment ministers and many of the great names from theworld of education.
Staff from Victoria Primary Academy had a very earlystart that morning in preparation for attending the awardsceremony. As a school we feel most proud and privilegedto have been nominated for this prestigious award and dueto all our achievements throughout the school; we knowthat we are true winners – Simply the BEST!Some of the staff who attended have shared their thoughts from the day....
“Being nominated for best school in the country was a realhonour and I felt very proud to be part of the team. It really
hit home how well we’d done when we got to the awardsceremony venue right in the heart of London - it was so posh!I felt like a movie star at the Oscars! I had my speech readyand a long list of who to thank, but alas, it wasn’t to be.Never mind - it was a day I will never ever forget.”Mr A Morrish (Headteacher)
“I was so excited to be part of something really special andthe fact we didn’t win didn’treally matter ... We are still inthe top six schools, Amazing!Overall a great day out for all the staff at Victoria ParkAcademy. I will have veryfond memories of that day for a long time to come...”Ms K Fowler
(Deputy Headteacher)
“We had a fantastic timetravelling to London andbeing so close to the Housesof Parliament, it made us feelreally important! It was a realhonour to represent our schoolat the event and when our video was shown it revealed
we were by far the best!!”Mrs A Dhesi
(Assistant Headteacher)
“The trip down to London was fantastic and althoughwe didn’t win I think we were much deserved runners-up! It’s a GREAT achievement for everyone”Mrs H Mapp (Assistant Headteacher)
“In my 8 years at Victoria Park, I have beeninvolved in a number of great events butgoing to London for the TES awards wasmy best day yet! A day that will be verydifcult to top. It was an amazing day, onethat will live in the memory of those lucky
enough to be there for a very long time.”Mr A Batham (Business Manager)
“It was a fantastic day! I was so proud to be a part of the big celebration. It was amazing to be shortlistedand an experience which I will never forget. The wholeday was excellent and very well organised. I am sohappy to be part of an OUTSTANDING school!”Mrs G Samra (Learning Support Assistant)
“It was early when I woke with butteries in mystomach! It felt a bit like a mini Christmas. Smartlydressed I felt so proud being a teacher and beingpart of something so special. Even though wedidn’t win, it didn’t really matter to me as we hadalready won in my eyes by being nominated and
getting there! Couldn’t be happier – this job is easywhen you work with OUTSTANDING children!”Mr M Wynne (Assistant Headteacher)
“I felt honoured to be there with my friends andcolleagues. It was wonderful that our children’shard work, enthusiasm and love of learning wereacknowledged. As a bonus, I received a lovelysurprise gift presented by Mr Morrish for 25 yearsof service to teaching!”Mrs P Malhi (Class Teacher)

“An outstanding experiencemeeting staff from other schools who have worked
their way up to being anoutstanding school. Sharing theopportunity and excitement of the day was awesome!”Mrs J Rose
(Learning Support Practitioner)
“I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunityand experience of visiting London on sucha prestigious occasion. Just knowing thatwe were in the nal six was so exciting. Aday to remember!”Mrs K Kainth (SENCO)
“Wow, what an experience! I was so proudthat we had been selected as a runner upin the TES awards. It was a great way toshare so many positive feelings with peoplewho work with who are also my friends!”Mrs S Mahal (Learning Mentor)
“It was for me a great experience, where I had the opportunity to spendtime with colleagues reecting onour achievements and sharing this
with others. It was also great beingaround other outstanding schoolsand institutions in Education whereindividuals and teams dedicate their lives to change and have positiveinuences on the children theyteach...very touching indeed.” Mrs S Bentley (Class Teacher)
“To have won the award would havejust been the icing on the cake, maybesomewhat gutted but, why do we really
need a trophy to tell us something that wealready know? We ARE the BEST schoolin the country, now and for years to come, who knows we could all be in for an awardnext year too!? “ Mrs T Herbert (Class Teacher)
“On arriving in London we all met up and enjoyed acup of tea, looking out for the other teachers - not toodifcult to spot, teachers rarely are. Meeting up witheveryone else - we were all quite excited to be thereand the room was lled with the hubbub of happy
teachers, eagerly anticipating the ceremony. As theceremony began we all looked through the programto see where in the proceedings our section was andfound it to be near the end. The build up just addedto the anticipation and nerves which I think we all felt.As our section was announced, we watched short clipsthat represented each school - ours was fantastic -much more interesting than others and a true reectionof the school - exciting and ambitious. They read outthe winner - it wasn’t us - gutted! I’m glad I went down
there and am proud to be part of a shortlisted school -that’s an achievement in itself. Well done Victoria Park- we deserved it even if we didn’t get it!”Mrs N Try (Class Teacher)
“What a great experience we had in London! Iwas so proud that we were chosen as one of the6 best primary schools in the country out of the20,000 that applied. I had a lovely time withmy work colleagues. It was a very special Day!”Mrs P McDonald
(Learning Support Assistant)
“What a memorable day. I had a fantasticjourney down to London with the Birminghamto Euston crew before travelling on the ‘Tube’and meeting up with the rest of the VPA staff. The awards ceremony was very entertainingand enjoyable. It was an extremely hot dayand I was very thirsty so it was a good job thatthere were lots of free drinks! It didn’t matter tome so much that we didn’t win as I think just to
be nominated is an incredible achievement initself. Everyone else who I have spoken to alsohad a thoroughly enjoyable day so I supposethe only question now is which category will weenter in next year...?”Mr H English (Class Teacher)
“It was a lovely experience toshare with colleagues whomI wouldn’t necessarily chat toon a day to day basis and anexperience not to be missed!”Mrs M Kaur

2013 has seen the Launch of our very special ViP Members’ andPartners’ Scheme!
‘And what is this?’ - You might be thinking...
Our ViP’s are very special businesses and organisations based in the localregion who want to work with Victoria Park Primary Academy to help us achieveamazing things with children, and help us to work very well as a school.
In April we had a very special meeting where important people from theseorganisations came to join us and discuss interesting ways of working together.
The ViP’s who have joined us this year at different levels are:
Commitment Level:Aspire People, Dunton Environmental, and RIO – The Real Ideas Organisation
Collaboration Level: Anthony Collins Solicitors, Regent Digital Printing, Creative Alliance,Wright and Co Accountants, and CMC School Food
Community Level:Infamous Community Arts and Worth Unlimited
All of these organisations are helping in different ways and will over the nextyear continue to do so. Look out for special articles on these organisations, including interviews by children with our Commitment Level partners!
You can also see them featured on our Digital Honours Board on the Screen inthe main reception area and in the ViP area of the School website – look out for the logo! Many of our ViP’s will also be joining us for special events such as the
Year 6 Production and Prom.
And from September, we are looking for more organisations to join our ViPScheme. If you work for or know of a Business or Organisation that you thinkwould like to get involved, please let us know!

Wac k y Science Lessons
Some of the most exciting lessons
that Year 6 ha ve been taking part in
recentl y are the Wack y Science lessons
which ha ve contributed to the content
for our Wack y Science Assembl y which
took place on Frida y 14th June. Both
Year 6 classes ha ve been acting and
producing a script and learning ho w to
put together some fascinating and fun
experiments for the audience to see.
By Arusah Hannan , 6A
Both Year 6 classes took part in an
assembl y which was all about
WACK Y SCIENCE!
6A researched and rehearsed differ -
ent experiments to those of 6 W. Some
science experiments contained an
element of m yster y and won
der and
items of food were used to carr y out the experiment while other experiments
contained an element of surprise and
shock as explosions were seen and
heard. There was a mix of craz y and
sensible scientists which added a bit of
humour to the whole thing. We had
fun while we prepared for the assembl y
and b y the reaction of the audience –
the y did too!

I remember the ver y rst time that I recei ved a certicate. It was when
I was in Year 2 and I had added up lots of three digit numbers – m y
teacher was ver y pleased and so was I!
In Year 3 I was quite embarrassed one da y when I arri ved at school
dressed in m y clo wn costume as I thought it wa
s clo wn da y. I could
see that the whole of the school was dressed in their uniform – I’d got
the da ys mixed up!
The rst time that I got into trouble was when I dropped a glass of
water on Mrs Green wa ys foot in Year 1.
