Finally, SATs are now well and truly over! Could this be the moment where we can just relax and chillax? Fr om December right up until May we HAD to wor k f r om morning right thr ough until the end of the afternoon. The SATs were harder than I expected; but we had put a lot of wor k inand hopefully this will help us to r eap the rewards. We have to wait to get our r esults and this seems a long way off !
While we have been waiting, we have been involved in some exciting pr ojects.Fir stly, we went to the cinema wher e we watched Rio 2. Some childr en had beenrewarded for tr ying har d and for their
behaviour throughout the year and at the time of the exams. These people had aVIP pass at the cinema and had popcorn, sweets and a dr ink brought f or them. Thelm was br illiant; ever yone thoroughly enjoyed it (even the teachers!) We then made our way to the ar cade where weplayed games while we waited for our lunch. We had a selection of burgers, chicken nuggets and drinks befor e wemade our way to the bowling alley. We had a fun time tr ying to beat our friendsand seeing who could get the most spar es and strikes and of course, who could get the highest score!
We visited the Islamic exhibition in SmallHeath where we lear ned all about theIslamic culture and religion. We learnedmany new and inter esting facts; this helped us when we wor ked on producing our own ‘Islamic Experience’ pr esentations. We wor ked har d to put together a miniexhibition to show case our work for theY ear 2 childr en.
Since then we have been working hard on our Y ear 6 leaver ’s production of the Lion King. We have been learning ourlines, researching the char acter s main characteristics and learning the songs fromthe original theatr e production. We are all very excited about perf orming this inf r ont of the whole school, our f amilies and visitors.
This proves ther e truly is lif e after SATs!

book which includes lots of our artwor k and written work too. The books are going to be
displayed at the librar y in Bir mingham.
I am really looking forwar d to our trip to Drayton Manor Theme Park, this will be our last trip together as a whole year group – we will denitely have to make the most ofit. My hope is that ever yone has lots of fun during their last few weeks at this f antasticprimar y school and that everyone in Year 6gets the SATs levels that they ar e hoping for.

MATHS FLIP!
A few weeks ago, some visitors came to VPA to visit Year 5 from Shireland Collegiate Academy. We were informedabout a new project which Year 5 would be taking part in called ‘MATHS FLIP’. A fun way to help us to understand the new project was to be shown a slideshow. The slide show had videos
on it as well as lots of diagrams andmessages. It was an introduction about the site we were going to use, supported by this amazing project. We were also given laptops that will be used for us tocomplete our ipped learning.
The laptop which we’ve been given is a touch screen device; the site which we
need to access from home is called RM UNIFY. We were also given a ‘goody -bag’ which included: a book aboutmaths (my book is called MURDEROUS MATHS), a highlighter labelled with MATHS FLIP, a pair of headphones, a pen and a calculator which has a ruler as well as a protractor and magnifying
glass attached to it. We enjoyed the short introduction of maths ip and enjoyed meeting some new people. We are also looking forward to using thisnew technology and getting stuck into our Maths Flip!

VP A SPORTS D A Y! VP A SPORTS D A Y!
Did you come to our sports day atVPA? Well if you didn’t, you’ll need toread on ‘cause you need to read aboutwhat a fascinating day that you missedout on! On the morning of Friday 13th
June, Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 gathered
together on the sports eld for ourannual sports day events. Mr Blackwood(Year 5 teacher and P.E co-ordinator)had planned different sports gamesand events for us to take part in. We allcompeted with our classmates, I tookpart in the bean bag throwing race. Itwas GREAT fun!
Everyone sat on the grass cheering theirown house colour on; I am in blue house
so I cheered for everyone taking partin that house. Along with the teachersand pupils, it was great to see so manyparents cheering on the children. Thismade everyone feel far more supportedand encouraged, especially when theywere running the distance races. Therewas an egg and spoon race, a bean
bag throwing event, 2 different distanceraces, the team relay race and manymore besides.
In the afternoon Reception and Years1 and 2 took part in their sports day
activities. The events which they tookpart in were similar to those of KeyStage 2; but they had to dress up insome of their races. 5B were lucky asthey got to stay outside and cheer onthe house teams for Reception and KeyStage 1. The judges (Mrs Kanda andMrs Smith) kept score for the whole day– thank you.
The different colour houses represented
were: Blue, Green, Yellow and Red. Itwill be interesting to see which team wonon the day! A BIG thank you goes to MrBlackwood who organised the wholeday and to everyone who supported theparticipants.

On Friday 13th June there was anexciting event at our school which was
our annual sports day! Key Stage 2 tookpart in the morning and Key Stage 1held their sports events in the afternoon.
All of the children had to get readyinto their PE kits and then they madetheir way, class by class, onto the eld. This year’s events were different to lastyear – we took part in the long jump,60m sprint, relay race, speed bounce, obstacle relay, bean bag toss, egg
and spoon race, sack race and thethree legged race. Everybody enjoyedsports day very much and althoughnot everyone took part in every event,
everybody did get to take part insomething.
I had fun watching other people andcheering for my friends and my houseteam. When it was my turn I was reallyglad; I participated in the 60m relayand showed great enthusiasm anddetermination. I feel that I contributed tomy team’s efforts really well.
It was great to see so many parentscheering on their children and we were
pleased that the sun was shining too!

On Apr il 30th 2014 ther e was a Spice Academy launch it was ver y exciting. The Spice Academy is about making and pr omoting dif f er ent things which can be made out of spices – we will be looking at selling the pr oducts in the ver y near f utur e. W hen I enter ed the hall ther e seemed to be a lot of excitement, I noticed Mr s Thompson (our school chef )
and two other men: Jamie Dunn and Mr Clither oe sitting at the f r ont of the hall. Mr Clither oe once owned a r estaur ant and had come to help us look at how we could mar ket and sell our pr oducts. Jamie is a young entr epr eneur ; he explained that he gets to tr avel all over the wor ld pr omoting his business. He encour aged us by saying that you need to wor k as a team and NEV ER give up!
Mr Mor r ish explained that each class had been given a dif f er ent spice and we wer e all asked to smell the spice in our bag to tr y to identif y it. It was r evealed that the spice we had in 5B was cor iander ; it smelt incr edibly str ong.At the f r ont of the hall was placed a huge pestle and a mor tar . This had been br ought into school by Mrs Dhesi. The
items had travelled all the way fr om India; ther e was a stor y behind their
ar r ival at the Dhesi house and Mr s Dhesi shar ed it with us.
After that, Mr Mor r ish showed us lots of dif f er ent spices, he r evealed that some childr en had got a colour ed sticker on their paper which descr ibed their spice. Those childr en wer e called out to the f r ont to help blend their spices together ; Mr s Thompson helped them to add their spices to the mor tar . Using the lar ge pestle they gr ound the spices down this pr oduced a special kind of spice called gar am masala. The childr en got to taste some spicy pakor as and chicken.
Thr oughout the r est of the week childr en had the chance to gr ind up dif fer ent kinds of spices using the special pestle and mor tar . W e wer e all given a sample of gar am masala to take home; this was to intr oduce us to the launch of the Spice Academy Spice Club which takes place in school ever y Thur sday af ter noon f r om 3.15pm until 4.30pm.
It was a gr eat exper ience and I am looking f or war d to lear ning mor e about spices.
