MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Fellow Rotarians & Friends, What a special week this has been with many things happening but 2 things of special mention to comment on. Firstly we were “People of Action” for a full day working bee at "Donations In Kind" last Saturday. How wonderful it was to gather together Rotarians & non-Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of Essendon, Camberwell & Hawthorn. The 25 or so of us certainly left DIK a lot dirtier & far more tired than how we started the day but wow…did we accomplish a lot. No-body could believe the variety of medical instruments & consumables that we had to sort through & organise. When the 10 Doctors & Nurses who assisted (how good this was!) didn’t even know what some of the instruments were for, we just laughed & improvised on what we thought we could use them for. As we sorted there were heaps of discussions about project work people are doing in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Cambodia, Vietnam & more. This exchange of ideas & information was fantastic. Watching a young nurse who has just returned from spending 2 months training nurses in Cambodia helping a non-medical young girl who she had never before met putting together heaps of First Aid equipment to take to Kenya at the end of this month, was wonderful to witness. So much fun we had, so much team-work & so much food, especially the cakes bought in by Don Jago, was absolutely worth turning up for. Then last night 100+ people attended the Inaugural Foundation Cluster Dinner. Hosted by RCE we enjoyed a very special night together with members, partners & friends from the Rotary Clubs of Gateway East & West Clusters, & also other Clubs in the District. Thank you to many of the District Leadership team for attending to hear so much inspiration from Dr Murray Verso talking about Foundation & David Abbey telling everyone about the Royce & Jean Abbey Scholarship & Awards. We then heard from our fabulous key-note speaker Lien Trinh, Project Manager for Rotary’s "End Trachoma 2020”. Everybody left the evening knowing why we are so proud to be a Rotarian for sure!

Congratulations to PP Maria Kouppas & PP Stephen Chandler on being presented a “Royce Abbey Award” at this dinner. They are certainly 2 members of our Club that display the enthusiasm & commitment to Rotary that Royce Abbey himself would absolutely applaud as we did together last night. It was very special to be able to announce these Awards in front of so many Rotarians & have David Abbey present them.

I thought I would today leave everyone with the following words written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1936, just 1 year after RCE was chartered. Let's think of these words as we talk about all the brilliant work the Rotary Foundation has achieved in 100 years & also all that we are accomplishing when we volunteer at Donations In Kind & raising money to help such major issues as trachoma & blindness in Australia & other parts of the world..

"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see things are hopeless & yet be determined to make them otherwise”

Other matters Proposed change of meetings Roger also put out a proposal to be discussed before deciding, to change the frequency of meetings to once a month, and charge a higher fee per person (suggested $40 per person) he stated that this will generate a greater number of attendees and would make it easier to book good speakers as well. Roger further suggested that in order to make up for any loss in revenue that an increase in the annual subscription be made, suggested $100 more, he acknowledged that the financials will need to be worked out to ensure the members benefit as well as the club with a larger attendance. He further suggested that all the committee meetings can be held on the same day at the same venue (perhaps new one) and the duration of the meeting to be two hours perhaps at night. President Jenny asked members to forward their views to Roger so that the proposal can be evaluated.

afternoon at the Laurel Hotel. No formalities or speeches – just some finger food and an Open Bar for 3 hours.

STAR CARNIVALE Dear Presdents, Presidents Elect and Foundation Directors, You will by now be aware of the Star Carnivale and the lighting up of the Melbourne Docklands Star Ferris Wheel in Rotary colours for the night of the 22nd April. However, if you’ve missed out on the information, details are attached below. Breaking News: Some clubs seem to be having some difficulty filling a POD (20 members) so we are now offering a half POD (10 members) to clubs and we will make a donation in that club’s name of $200. Donations can also be made in individual’s names It is getting close to the event and we now need a commitment from those clubs who have promised to be part of this 'first of its kind’ unique event.

END POLIO NOW CAMPAIGN As a donor to The Rotary Foundation, funds can be directed to the End Polio Now campaign and what an absolute highlight it will be for Rotary when the last case of polio is finally recorded. With more than 350,000 cases annually in 1988 to just 22 reported last year, success is imminent and as Rotarians we can all be a part of that and be justifiably proud of the achievement. Donations can also be applied to the Annual Fund from which Rotary Clubs can access grants to assist with their individual projects. Our own Club has been one of the most successful in our District in applying for these grants so your donation can be viewed as a two-way transaction given the likelihood of funds returning to our Club. I can't think of another charity which returns money to its donors with the added bonus of tax deductibility for all donations! There is no other charity which I would rather support and I wholeheartedly encourage you all to do the same. Finally the Moonee Valley Art Show Committee would like to extend an invitation to all Rotary Club members and families to join with the Columban Priests, sponsors and volunteers to celebrate the successful 4th Annual Moonee Valley Art Show. The Committee hopes to be able to announce the final monetary gains from this event which will greatly help both the Rotary Clubs of Keilor East & Essendon to continue to support local & international communities. The dinner event will be held this Thursday night 12th April, 6.30pm at Tamburro’s Restaurant, 376 Keilor Rd. Niddrie. All meals and drinks are reasonably priced. WORK AT DIK

Thank you all so, so much for assisting us with getting heaps sorted at

DIK last Saturday.

We achieved so much. How long it would have taken us to sort all those

instruments, dressings & so much more on those many pallets without a

large team to assist us.

At the same time I believe we all had fun & we can thank DIK for us all

leaving a lot more dirty & tired than we started the day.

"Many hands make light work" & that definitely can be said about our work

on Saturday. It was terrific to see such a difference in age from

Patrick¹s 9 year son & Gordon¹s 18 year old Grandson to who knows what our

upper age was. I do believe that Patrick¹s son took more photos that would

be good to share with this group if Gordon could organise this please, &

anyone else that did the same. I took a few that are attached but now

realise I should have taken more as I missed a few people. Maybe I was too

busy talking?!?!

It was wonderful to also have 10 Doctors & Nurses on the team. How

valuable all this knowledge was to sort the most incredible amount of

different items. It was also fantastic to see Rotarians from 4 different

Clubs (Essendon, Keilor East, Camberwell & Hawthorn) come together with

other non-Rotarians to work together to achieve so much. I also forgot to

count how many people we had come along on the day but I¹m thinking it was

around 25 in total.

So much chatter about projects being helped by this group in Cambodia,

Vietnam, Tanzania, Kenya, EthiopiaŠ...just to name a few. How interesting

all these conversations were & how wonderful to be able to share

information between each other. I loved it when I saw 2 of the young girls

who came for the first time helping each other. Tess who has just returned

from 2 months spent training Nurses at the Handa Emergency Hospital in

Battambang, Cambodia assisting Victoria to pack lots of First Aid items

for a large school in Kenya that have nothing like this that she will take

to Kenya at the end of this month.

So many people there that Sue Gray (nurse who does heaps of project work

in Vietnam) didn¹t even realise that Dr Peter Lugg was there in the other

aisle working awayŠ...they used to work together. Sue was so pleased to

find out that Peter was able to recently send 2 containers of medical

equipment to Cambodia & currently we are working towards the next one.

We had many of you asking if we could have more of this fun again,

obviously everyone loves getting dirty!!.

After most people had left, Sue Gray, Deb Sloggett & I decided to pencil

in another working bee for Saturday, 2 JUNE (TBC by Bob & Laurie of

course). Stay tuned for a date confirmation.

Speakers for the day – Cluster night – End Trachoma PP Maria Kouppas acted as the MC for the night and introduced Dr Murray Verso who spoke briefly about the good work done by Rotary in the world and what Rotary Foundation does and where the money goes for charity. He said that the bulk of the money goes to the “End Polio Campaign” he said when it began there were 1,000 cases per day and now only 6 cases found mostly in Afghanistan. He said the Foundation is a Charity of choice. David Abbey spoke next and spoke about the Royce & Jean Abbey Scholarship award and said the late Past International President became a Rotary member in 1954 the year David was born, and became the RI President in the years 1988/89. He said the Royce & Jean Abbey Fund was initially started for agricultural scholarships with US$10,000. Since then over 30 scholarships have been awarded. He further said that the Royce Abbey Award was started in 2004 for Rotarians showing Commitment & Enthusiasm and a donation of $1,000 made to the fund with each award. He said that if there is a person in the Asia/Pacific region that is deserving of the award, this should be brought to the notice of the committee. The next speaker was Lien Trinh – End Tracoma

Lien spoke about the need to end Tracome by the year 2020. She said she wanted to work with people with the decease which

she said is totally preventable. She said that she worked in SriLanka after the Tsunami and she met a person who was blind and

at that time she felt that she wanted to do more for people affected by this desease.

She said she persued studies in Public health in the UK and after returning to Australia she found that we are the only

developed country in the workld to suffer from this decease specially in the Aboriginal community due to the lack of facilities

and the lack of hygiene.

She said that it was difficult to talk about hygiene with indegenious people and she eventually did this by having workshops.

She thanked the Rotary community for the help obtained so far and requested further donations for work in this area.

District Recognitions – applications due by 1st May The purpose of District Recognitions is to acknowledge and encourage “excellence” in a variety of key areas. They are designed to give Clubs and their members pride in their achievements and to set the benchmark in what Clubs can do to make a difference within our community. This year we have revised the categories, which are now aligned to the Avenues of Service, with six categories in total, that continue to align to the District 9800 Strategic Goals and Objectives. A maximum of two projects will be selected in each category thereby making no more than 12 Recognitions being celebrated as being the ‘best of the best’. A project/event can only be nominated in one category (to avoid duplicate awards). All recognitions within the six categories can be nominated by the Club’s AG or an Avenue of Service Chair/DLT member who would then encourage the Club to apply and provide supportive documentation. Clubs can also continue to self-nominate but would need to seek an endorsement from their AG /Avenue of Service Chair/DLT Member to ensure the project/event fits the criteria outlined. This will ensure Clubs do not spend time making submissions that would not qualify for selection. District Assembly 20th May District Assembly is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other Rotarians and Rotaractors in District 9800, as well as being an opportunity to meet the incoming District Support Team. The day is structured to give individual members the chance to learn more about their portfolio as well as networking with others in similar positions in other Clubs. A session for new members is extra special, and this will show them the scope of Rotary within the District and beyond. I encourage you to bring all members of your incoming Team and members who have joined your Club within the last 12 months. This day will be held on Sunday 20 May at Tabcorp Park in Melton with registration between 8.15am - 9.00am. The day concludes with lunch at 1.30pm. Attached is the Agenda for the day, detailing the sessions along with a Registration Form. Please complete the Registration Form and return it to Jane Pennington, District Secretary Elect with payment going to the Rotary Club of Melton (payment details on the form) by the RSVP date of 7 May. We ask that all attendees indicate which breakout sessions they will be attending in Session 1 and 2.

Lunch is optional and if you and your team decide to have lunch the choice of meal should be indicated on the Registration Form. The cost of attendance for the day is $15 and the cost of lunch is $22 hence the total for the day is $37. District changeover
