MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

President welcomed the guests, Angelina Airo-Farulla and her friends Carmel West and Bev Scanlon.

Hooray…the last week of Winter! This week we will start to emerge from hibernation & get excited about the AFL Finals & the gardens blooming & the sun shining! What a fantastic City we live in but for some it is perhaps not so great. The Homeless…they will be even more pleased to think Winter is finally ending! Today we heard from Ben Mabon, National Mentoring Coordinator for “LADDER”, a fantastic not-for-profit organisation established by a group of AFL players in 2007 in a bid to empower young people to break the cycle of homelessness. Ladder is the Official Charity of AFL Players and a national partner of the AFL. How fortunate they are to have such a fantastic & inspirational spokesman. Ben is, & will continue to make, a huge difference to the lives of many of our Youth who sadly have found themselves in difficult situations. More details about Ben’s talk later in this publication.

President Jenny also welcomed the speaker for the day Ben Mabon. Jenny informed all of the upcoming Homelessness forum

on the 10th September.

President Jenny also informed all to participate in the dinner party raffle on Saturday 2nd September and said that at present

only 6 couples have registered to come and we want more on the day!

Jenny also made note that this month is Member Month – Rotary in Motion month

President also mentioned the fact that our club activities are on Face Book and that there have been 90 likes! Credit to PP Lisa.

President Jenny also acknowledged the good work done by Grant Sheldon, Peter Condos and his team on the website that is

currently been completed.

Veronica suggested that every Director should have a story on the web page.

Daryl Lee informed all present about the great work done at the Men’s Shed, he said the project was started as a joint venture

with the Rotary Club of Strathmore. The recent BBQ at Bunning’s Coburg has turned into a money spinner!

He said the MS is now assembling goods for Bunning’s Coburg and said that last Saturday two SUVs were loaded with goods to

Bunning’s for sale and most were sold.

Daryl reminded all of the Members BBQ this Wednesday August 30th all are welcome. The working with wood show is on Friday

8th Sept.

My friend, Tony Colicchia (The Sicilian) won the raffle but failed to draw the joker (that was not in the pack!)

BEN MABON from "LADDER" – tackling youth homelessness

Ben Mabon is a former North Melbourne listed player from country NSW. When Ben was playing in Adelaide’s SANFL he got involved with Ladder through mentoring a 17 year old young person from Ladder’s Port Adelaide program. Nine months later, Ben was employed by Ladder as a Community Engagement Coordinator which saw him work for 18 months on ground level across three Ladder sites delivering programs around fitness, healthy eating, cooking, leadership and mentoring. In 2017, Ben’s role is now National Mentoring Coordinator, focusing on where his real passion lies. For more details see attached flyer.

Ben gave a moving talk about how he came to be involved in “Project Ladder”

looking after the welfare of the homeless youth, he said he came from a very

stable and good family where he was able to speak to his father and mother

about his “growing pains” he said he found he was able to speak to his mum

about girl friend issues and she would always listen.

Ben said he started to study at TAFE after his football days were over but found

that studying was not for him, he said he enjoyed mentoring and motivating

youth, as he had received from his parents.

Ben said that he enjoyed the work of uplifting the lives of new refugees and

homeless youth and to see them succeed brought him great joy. He said he

played sport with the kids and taught them how to cook and do laundry.

He related a story of a boy who was turning 21 years and mentioned to him

that it was his birthday and Ben had bought a cake and eats and arranged a

small party where all sang “happy birthday” to this boy who later said to Ben

that it was the first time in his life that somebody had sung happy birthday to

him and celebrated his birthday!

Ben informed all that there 45,000 homeless kids around Australia and Ladder

project is trying to help as many as possible who deserve help, he said that he

is not a counsellor but able to show leadership by way of action more than words, as an example he said that he despises

people who throw rubbish on the ground and he always mentors his youth to not do so and at time leads the way in collecting

rubbish to engage the kids to do the same and teach them good values. He said he always tries to lead by example as this is

what leadership is and does not try to order or instruct others to do what he will not do.

Ben said that his organisation is now spreading Australia wide and there is a lot of community support and requested Rotary to

get involved in his good work and support his cause.

Maurice remembers The original Gong was presented to the Club on formation in 1935 by George Coles on behalf of our sponsors , the Rotary Club

of Melbourne, It was 30 cm high with a diameter of 10cm, a 5 cm Rotary wheel was at the top of the Gong. It was made of

brass and was a silvery colour. Former member Harry Rozet donated a larger, heavier gong in 1980-81 which we have in

storage after Lino Airo-Farulla produced a new one for us. But we still use the older gong for larger occasions to call a meeting

to order.

Alan murphy is progressing well with the book and he has already rewritten the first 30 years up to 1965. At this point we have

a problem with the history of some years. We are missing some years and every effort will be made to find out more of what

our projects were during those years. We will also look in the annals of Essendon and we will have to spend time at the state

library for past Essendon gazette editions. Many of our projects where covered by the local press during those years thanks to

the efforts of past president Syd Smith. The years in question are 63/64 Royce Abbey 67/68 David Manning 70/71 Stewart

Strack 72/72 Jim Lamers 74/75 Don Rhode 75/76 Henry Curwen-Walker.

We have some information for those years but we would like to investigate every aspect if possible, could any member who

can assist please give Maurice Mollica a call or send an e-mail to him. Thank you for your help.

And then In the Rotary year 2000/2001 the Rotary Club of Essendon undertook to present a project naming the top citizens of the

century in the City of Essendon. We would like to include them in the proposed book. We only remember 7 at this stage, if any

of the members recall some of the names could you please give me a call or e-mail the name/s to me please. Thank you for

As mentioned Alan murphy has already written 30 years of our history. He will go back at a later stage and see if those years

need adding up items that have come up by reviewing books in the state library and the Annals of Essendon, but as it stands we

are going well. With that in mind we are now looking at years where there is nothing noted by the past presidents and we are

wanting to find out fact or events for those years. We are contacting all past presidents and/or their secretaries. WE NEED

YOUR HELP: PAST PRESIDENT ALAN MURPHY HAS ALREADY WRITTEN THE FIRST 30 YEARS OF OUR CLUB HISTORY. AT THIS

Men’s Shed – Activity news Successful day @ Bunnings, left with two car loads of SMShed merchandise, returned with Only half a car load for four hours

work and raised $349, from the planters, saw horses, dining table, helicopters, a chess board, the last of the dice, the yellow

truck, the old pine coffee table, miniature dolls house and one big bench board. Also picked up a few orders and two shed

participation enquiries.

Paul, Clem & Kerry, Daryl and Rod all had fun.

Bunnings indicated they will need us for assembly again on the 6 September so whoever is covering this needs to also pick up

Gift Vouchers for our efforts on 23/8.

Fires near Bahay Tuluyan

As advised to the Club today, we will be taking donations until the end of September….in the “glass jar”, including

Credit Card pledges that will be directed to Cathy Nicou for processing & tax deductibility receipts will be issued

where necessary.

Fires in Manila On Friday 18 August 2017 two fires broke out in areas where Bahay Tuluyan works, almost simultaneously. One was just near BT in Malate, on Adriatico St and the other in Tondo. The fires spread quickly and destroyed a total of about 650 homes. Many of those affected are children and youth that BT has been working with. They lost everything. Bahay Tuluyan is currently sheltering 31 families, or more than 100 people (ranging from 3 weeks old to 60+, some with disabilities) who have nowhere else to go. We don’t know how long they will be with us but we are committed to helping them get back on their feet. Included in those who lost everything is Richard, who was in Australia for KidsView in 2017, Madel (2015) and Pasencia (2008) – Pasencia is due to give birth in less than a month. Many of the other youth who lost their homes are actively involved as youth facilitators in Bahay Tuluyan’s programs. In the short term we are providing shelter, clothes and basic needs. For the medium-term our social workers are working with the families to establish what their plans are and how we can best help. We are also coordinating with the government to see if they will be able to provide any support. During the day, while the families are cleaning up what is left of their houses the children are staying in our Drop-In Center and everyone is working together to make this as comfortable as possible. All donations towards helping these families would be sincerely appreciated. It is difficult for us to get in-kind donations over to the Philippines so financial support would be better. Despite, or perhaps because of, the tragedy we have seen some incredible acts of kindness in the past week. Dear fellow Rotarians

I am contacting you in regard to the District 9800 bulletin, The Networker.r I was asked to take on the role this year after the retirement of long time editor, Gordon Cheyne. I have edited my own club bulletin for over 10 years and also serve on the District as part of the learning and development team. This newsletter is published fortnightly and by email link to all Rotarians in the District. It is a compilation of news articles from the clubs in our district as well as some information from the District Governor, Foundation Chair and RI.

The newsletter takes approx 35 hours to create and publish however, the latest statistics show that less than 30% of Rotarians are actually accessing The Networker either through the clickable email link or through the website. Why is this?

Unfortunately, not all clubs forward a copy of their bulletin to the club bulletins email and so are not telling their story to the DG and the District team. Again, why not?

I am therefore seeking your assistance in 3 areas: 1. Make sure your club bulletins are emailed to clubbulletins@rotarydistrict9800.org 2. Please ask your members why they do not read Networker, and what would make it more attractive to them. Could you then let me know the answers? 3. Encourage all your members to read The Networker when it is emailed each fortnight, either by clicking the email link or by accessing online. I am very proud of what The Networker produces and shares, and encourage you all to share it with your community organisations - it is not just for Rotarians. I personally send my club bulletin to our local councillors, schools, community groups and past members informing them of what we are doing and encouraging them to work with us. Thank you for your help in this matter, and please keep sending your great stories into me. Help me make Networker an even better magazine we are all proud to share. Lesley McCarthy
