The 12th Edition of the FINEX- Citibank Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition has yielded many interesting firsts in its history.

In an epic down-the-wire finish, UP Iloilo smashed the monopoly dominated by the Big 3 in the National Capital Region - UP Diliman, Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle University - Manila, who among them have won all the previous 11 championships.

Despite the rains outside, the competition flourished inside the Auditorium generously provided by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Twenty one teams battled it out to determine the top finance education school in the Philippines.

In the end, the University of the Philippines System produced a rare 1-2 finish with UP Iloilo finishing first and UP Diliman finishing second. De la Salle University put a big run in the early stages and was in contention up to the last 3 questions of the competition.

UP Iloilo smashes 11 year NCR monopoly

The only foreign contingent, National University of Singapore, also was in contention up to the 4th to the last question.

ICFC salutes the Singaporean team from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Incidentally, the Singaporean team was composed of a Thai, Mr. Supawat Poothanapibul, a Filipina, Stacey Janine Chong and a Vietnamese, Ms. Tran Nguoc Van. They demonstrate the polycultural nature and the regional drawing power of an educational powerhouse like the National University of Singapore.

NUS finished in the 6th place with Ateneo de Manila University.

The results of the 12th ICFC proved that regional participants, particularly from the Visayas are every bit as competitive as their NCR counterparts in finance education.

It’s all over but the cel-ebrations. U P - I l o i l o did great and de-

served the top slot for the ICFC.

I am particularly proud that this year our FINEX-Citi Ra-fael B. Buenaventura Out-standing Finance Educator also came from the Visayas, Bohol to be exact.

These tell us that talent and intelligence abound in the nooks and crannies of the archipelago and that FINEX should try to coax them out of their shells to garner the recognition they all so richly deserve.

My congratulations and thanks go to Citibank for their continued support, the organizers, judges, vol-unteers, partners and other sponsors, the secretariat and of course all the coaches and students who participated.

UP Iloilosmashes 11 year NCR monopoly(From previous page)

The University of San Carlos (Cebu) led all schools in topping the elimination round and finished in the Top 10 of the Finals.

The finance education programs of Mindanao-based schools and universities appear needing to be propped up and upgraded - a job for the FINEX Business Education Committee.

Even Xavier University, Ateneo de Davao and the Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology failed to break past the eliminations.

Notwithstanding, it is satisfying to note that of the top 10 finishers in the finals, 4 regional competitors did well: UP Iloilo at top 1, University of San Carlos at top 4, University of Baguio at top 7 and Silliman University at top 8.

The ICFC is already looking forward to a more exciting 13th edition.

The final of the 12th ICFC held last October 18 in the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas probably presented one of the most fiercely contested competitions in the history of the ICFC.

It was eventually won by UP Iloilo in a see-saw battle with its sister school, UP Diliman, De la Salle Manila, University of San Carlos and a hard charging and diesel-type late accelerating Far Eastern University (true to its moniker Tamaraws). The race went down the wire that kept everyone, the judges, the FINEX members, the school supporters and even the Bangko Sentral officials glued to their seats.

Leading up to this final, the crowd favorite was University of San Carlos, a school based in Cebu City. Its team quite literally blew away the competition during the eliminations at the Asian Institute of Management in September.

JFINEX members recall that this is the 2nd time that a provincial school topped the eliminations in the 12-year history of the ICFC.

JFINEX members who supervised the NCR eliminations at AIM were thinking that this would be another year of the BIG THREE (Ateneo, last year’s champion, UP Diliman and La Salle Manila).

But we got the surprise of our lives

12th ICFC most competitive ever

when out of left field, during the regular updates from the provinces between the rounds, the lead was firmly taken by University of San Carlos, eclipsing the oligopoly of the big three.

My speech during the finals before the start and a quick talk sometime in the 2nd round could have been ominous.

In my welcome remarks, I said there are 2 things they must always possess, even after the ICFC, and these are a forever competitive spirit and an attitude for networking.

In the middle of the finals I said that this year’s ICFC has turned out to be one of the most competitive as it has seen a provincial school top the eliminations. With the top 7 teams including then UP Iloilo, University of San Carlos, La Salle Dasmarinas, UP Baguio, I said that the big three should have their hands full of competition and had better watch their back as the other schools are breathing down their necks.

I addressed Ateneo, La Salle Manila and UP Diliman that they should not get complacent as these schools were serious in getting the crown away from them.

And they did. With this, history is rewritten and a new legacy has been started.

We often read about good and negative attitudes.

We know good attitude in-spires and negative attitude is a turn-off.

When consistently prac-ticed, good attitude leads to good character and negative attitude to bad character.

What makes a poor student convert his poverty into an opportunity for topping his class and excelling in school?

What makes a man of lit-tle means strive to become an entrepreneur and turn around his deprivation into an engine for growth?

Attitude, character and skills

Yes, good attitude and char-acter.

And yet good attitude is not taught in school.

We are left in school to stum-ble on negative attitude and to rise on positive attitude without knowing what they are.

Some learn about good at-titude from trial and error. Many learn about it past the age of college. Still others never learn about it until it is too late.

People are encouraged to become entrepreneurs by teaching them technical skills,

profit and loss statements and bank lending proce-dures.

Teach a person the attitude and character of a successful entrepreneur and the skills and technology required of a successful entrepreneur follow.

Skills, technology and intel-ligence are important. But even more important are good attitude and character.

Isn’t it about time we know precisely what makes atti-tude good or bad and what attitude turns people into winners?
