1. Innovative Corrosion Test Equipment Corrosion = Chemistry

Corrosion = Chemistry

The innovation was the key word since the very beginning of the VLM activity back in 1999. For this reason we have pursued different design concepts for our test chambers such as the use of stainless steel as the main material for our test chambers. In combination with the ECTFE (ethylene chloro-trifluoroethylene) coating this solution ensures a rapid heat transfer into the test chamber. This implies rapid test transitions.

The steady increase of the demand for VLM test chambers is a result of ever changing climatic test procedures which require extended temperature range, faster transiant times and more accurate control of humidity and temperature. Especially car manufacturers are leading in changing, existing and developing new climatic test procedures for accelerated corrosion tests. Compared to the traditional designs of test chambers on the market which have reached their physical limits, VLM offers advanced ClimaCORR® technology which easily meets the requirements of most demanding climatic test standards.

ClimaCORR® technology features fully automated process control in conjunction with complex control systems which regulate temperature and humidity. This meets the highest demands related to the accuracy, stability and reproducibility of test climates. The consequence of globalisation is that climatic test chamber should produce the same test results regardlesss the geographical region. ClimaCORR® meets this requirement.

2.3 Range of Available Controllers / PLC’s The range of corrosion test methods has significantly widened in the last years. Accordingly, the demand for the precision of temperature and humidity control as well as the control of complex test procedures have considerably increased. 3. Front Loading Cabinets for Water Condensation Tests (CON) According to: DIN EN ISO 6270-2 (CH, AT, AHT)

3.1 Product Description: These compact and easy to operate frontg loading test chambers are designed for conducting Constant Humidity (CH) and alternating temperature / humidity corrosion tests (AT, AHT) pursuant to the most common international corrosion tests such as DIN EN ISO 6270-2:2005 and ASTM D2247.

3.2 Unique Features of VLM Test Chambers for Water Condensation

Water condensation can only happen if the air temperature is below the dew point. This implies that the temperature inside the test chambers for water condensation should be kept as constant and as uniform as possible. This is required in order to ensure the highest reproducibility of the test. Moreover the conditions in the laboratory (e.g. temperature, sunlight, draft) must not affect the climate inside the test chamber during the test.

The design of VLM bench-top test chambers for this reason feature isolated double walls and roofs which protect the test chamber from influence of draft or direct sunlight.

Further, the high uniformity of the temperature inside the test chamber is a result of flat heaters underneath the bottom of the test chamber. High accuracy and speed of the temperature regulation is a merit of steel construction of the test chamber (high speed of heat transfer). The highly sensitive control system allows the horizontal temperature accuracy in the test sample zone of ±0,5°C.

To achieve the highest reproducibility of climatic conditions inside the test chamber VLM has developed and patented the Controlled Water Condensation (CWC) system.

To control the water condensation, temperature is measured not only above the water at the bottom of the trough but also under the roof. Once the setpoint of 39°C is exceeded underneath the roof, special air fans built inside the roof shell start circulating fresh environmental air through the double shell roof. The fresh air is cooling the ceiling of the chamber which lowers the temperarure inside the test chamber and allows very precise and fast temperature control.

The CWC system offers particular advantages not only for water condensation but also in combination with salt spray, condensation and climate change test equipment. The CWC system saves energy during Salt Spray test by providing good isolation of the roof while the same system allows very accurate temperature control by increasing the heat transfer during the Water Condensation phase.

This is particularly true for the ClimaCORR® test chest where the highest possible isolation has to take effect during the freezing phase. On the other hand, heat losses are required to allow condensation during the water condensation test. This conflict is successfully solved by the patented VLM’s CWC system inside the double shell lid of the test chamber.

4. Front Loading Cabinets for Kesternich (SO2) Test

4.1 Product Description

VLM offers three types of systems performing Kesternich test:

- Manual gas dosing system (KES) with pparaffin oil

- Electronic gas dosing system (EKES)

- Automatic gas dosing system (AKES)

Virtually any VLM front loading test chamber designed to perform water condensation tests (CON) can be equipped with one of above gas dosing systems for performing Kesternich test in the SO2 environment.

For practical and cost-effective reasons the smaller test chambers (CON and CON-SAL) with Jumo dTRON controller are frequently fitted with the manual gas dosing system for the Kesternich test. This flexible approach is possible due to the fact that the KES system operates completely independently from the process controller built into the test chamber.

The Electronic Kesternich Test (EKES) in the SO2 environment is also suitable for virtually any VLM test chamber (except for the SAL range) and regardless of the controller used. The electronic gas dosing device offers a great deal of comfort and operating flexibility to the users however it still requires human intervention while conducting the Kesternich test. Any test chamber equipped with Jumo dTRON or Jumo Imago controller can be equipped with EKES system since it operates independently from the process controller built into the test chamber.

Finally, the automatic gas dosing system (AKES) for the Kesternich test is fully integrated with the sophisticated Beckhoff process controller. In contrary to the previous systems AKES dos not require any human intervention while conducting the Kesternich test since the gas dosing unit is controlled by the Beckchoff controller.

7. Test Chambers (Chests) for Salt Spray Tests

7.1 Product Description Compact and easy to operate top loading chests are designed for conducting salt spray tests pursuant to the most common corrosion test such as NSS, ESS and CASS.

7.2 About Salt Spray Test The Salt Spray test is a relatively simple corrosion test. Prerogative for reliable results is not only to follow the standard test procedure but also to properly prepare test samples and keep all compo-nents clean. For this reason are VLM test chambers for Salt Spray test are designed in such way to meet and control these conditions. Main features of VLM test SAL chambers are:

- Electronically controlled membrane pumps for a constant, stable and accurate dosing of test solution. Two types of pumps are availabe: with manual dosing control and electronic dosing control by means of PLC featuring digital display

- Freely moving tanks for preparation and containment of test solution for Salt Spray test

- Transparent humidifier with compressed air made of security shock resistant borosilicate glass for visual inspection

- Two manometers for indication of the pressure in the humidifier and the spraying nozzle.

- High precision spraying nozzle with adjustable mix of test solution and compressed air made of PEEK

7.3 Requirements for Conducting Salt Spray and Cyclic Corrosion Tests

7.3.1. Compressed Air

Supply: pressure 6-8 bar

Compressed air is required for the production of the salt spray, for blowing the salt spray into test chamber, blasting salt fog outside the test chamber after the salt spray test is finished and for the operation of the pneumatic components such as the ball valves.

According to DIN EN ISO 9227 the operation of Salt Spray test chambers requires oil-free compressed air. VLM offers a range of air filtering units as accessories.

7.3.2. Water / Demineralized Water

Water supply pressure: 2-4 bar

VLM offers ion-exchange cartridges for water demineralization. Demi water is required both for cleaning the test chamber and for the preparation of the test solution.

7.3.3. Drain Water

Drain water connection according to the fitting on the test chamber. The drain water is normally evacuated through flexible PU hose. In case of test chests it might happen that the drain in the laboratory is positioned higher than the drain fitting VLM provides a drain pump as accessory.

7.3.4. Air Exhaust

The air exhaust should be ideally implemented with a flexible PU plastic hose to a PVC tube which will evacuate the salt fog directly outdoor. The flexible hose connection from the test chamber should not be longer than 1.5 m in order to avoid a "water trap" by reverse flowing condensate.

NOTE: The test chamber must not be connected directly to laboratory ventilation system which would create a suction effect. This suction effect will not allow an uniform distribution of the salt fog preventing a uniform fall out in the test chamber.

7.3.5. Electrical Supply

8. Test Chambers for Cyclic Climate Tests (CCT)

8.1 Product Description

The CCT type of test chambers, both front loading and top loading design, is developed to conduct automated, cyclic corrosion tests pursuant to the major corporate test standards developed by the international automotive industry. These test chambers can also perform standard Salt Spray test according to ISO 9227 and Water Condensation tests (CH, AT AHT) according to ISO 6270-2.

VLM uses two types of controllers for CCT test chambers: Jumo IMAGO and Beckhof PLC.

Note: The VLM CCT test chambers are not designed to regulate humidity. For this reason they are not suitable for more complex corporate tests which require humidity control (e.g. Renault ECC1 or Nissan CCT1).

9.1 Product Description

Compact and highly sophisticated front and top loading test chambers developed for conducting the advanced cyclic corrosion tests pursuant to the corporat e standards of the international automotive industry such as Nissan CCT1 and Renault ECC1.

All ClimaCORR® test chambers are equipped with the hi-end Beckhoff PLC controller.

Note: The VLM ClimaCORR® test chambers regulate both humidity and temperature very accurately. Due to their unique design these chambers can perform any standard corrosion test and can be programmed for any customized test. The car manufacturers, in particular, have developed standards for corrosion testing based on their own research. At present all major automobile brands have their own corrosion testing methods with diverse requirements for testing equipment. In light of this situation VLM has developed a state of the art ClimaCORR® technology that meets the requirements of most car manufacturers and is future proof. ClimaCORR® test chambers are currently being proven in numerous demanding applications.

5 Sensor Technology The essential requirement, which ClimaCORR® technology meets, is the rapid and uniform heat transfer into and out of the test chamber. To facilitate this heat transfer and simultaneously keep accurate temperature control, there are 4 temperature sensors are located close to the heaters, but the leading sensor for high precision temperature control is movable and can be placed in the vicinity of the specimens in the sample zone. In order to control the humidity at temperatures lower than the environmental temperature (<25°C) inside the

laboratory an external climate module must be used.

The capacitive sensor for humidity measurement is inserted inside the test chamber only during the controlled humidity phase and hot air The water for the steam generator is fed through the humidifier. Hot steam is injected into the test chamber in the vicinity of the spray nozzle. The steam is immediately being circulated throughout the test chamber. The response time between the steam being injected and the moment the humidity sensor starts reacting is only about 0.2 seconds.

A number of software and hardware solutions are used in ClimaCORR® technology in order to facilitate maximum

accuracy, flexibility and reproducibility when conducting complex cyclic corrosion tests. In the next section the test

results are presented which prove the statement above.

The Renault ECC1 test places high demands on the reproducibility of the phase change between humidity 55% RH and

90% RH at constant chamber temperature of 35°C ± 0.8°C. Renault has tested ClimaCORR® technology and confirmed

ist suitability for the ECC 1 test. The following diagram shows the high performance of the ClimaCORR® test chamber

in terms of its accuracy and its very fast transitions.

10.1 Product Description

ClimaCORR® FR test chamber is the device designed to perform all standard and customized tests allowing controlled humidity (20%-98%, not over the complete temperature range) and the operating temperature range of between -40°C up to + 80°C. There are two models of this test chamber with freezing functionality:

11.23 Climate modules (climate acc. to DIN 50014 / ISO 554, for PV 1210)

The corporate test standard VW PV 1210 and other cyclic corrosion tests require the specimens to be placed in ventilated test chamber with the climate according to ISO 554 (23°C and 50% RH). There are more corporate tests that require different climate during ventilation (drying) phase such as Renault ECC1 test (35°C and less than 30% RH). For these applications VLM offers climatic modules in two power ranges: up to 50 m³ and up to 300 m³ of air volume / hour. The climate modules are connected to the test chamber with PU spiral hoses.
