First - draw a representation of it. It doesn’t have to be perfect Then discuss - when did you first see it? what did you first think? why is it memorable for you? how does it make you feel?

WHAT IS VISUAL RHETORIC? What does the term “visual rhetoric” mean to you?
![Page 13: Visual rhetoric week 4;1](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062400/58a68f211a28ab31478b55b1/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?“Picture superiority effect” – we can make meaning easier from pictures than words presented alone.
Verbal information – 3 days later remember 10%
Shown a visual as well – remember 65%
Exposed to 1000s of visuals daily
Need to know how to ‘read’ them
![Page 14: Visual rhetoric week 4;1](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062400/58a68f211a28ab31478b55b1/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
IMAGES IN TEXTS
They are not just ‘prettying up’ the text; they have a
purpose.
Images can argue and persuade just
like words.
You need to choose images
that fit your purpose.
![Page 15: Visual rhetoric week 4;1](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062400/58a68f211a28ab31478b55b1/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
JOB APPLICATION PICTURE Which picture would be best to use?
Why? Explain your reasoning behind your choices!
![Page 16: Visual rhetoric week 4;1](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062400/58a68f211a28ab31478b55b1/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
JOB APPLICATION PICTURE Which picture would be best to use?

POSITIONING WHERE the image comes in the text is also important.
![Page 18: Visual rhetoric week 4;1](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062400/58a68f211a28ab31478b55b1/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
SIZEWhat is included in the picture? What is cut out?
![Page 19: Visual rhetoric week 4;1](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062400/58a68f211a28ab31478b55b1/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
MESSAGE What message/meaning are you trying to convey?
Is this the best image for that message? What would YOU want to see as a prospective student?
![Page 20: Visual rhetoric week 4;1](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062400/58a68f211a28ab31478b55b1/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
BRAINSTORMING Thinking about your blog post, what visuals could you include? Start making a list and where you might be able to find them. If you have technology, start your research and take a look.
Or think about visuals that persuaded YOU to choose UI. Why are they successful? How could you recreate this success with your own pictures?
If you HAVE included pictures, write down why you have chosen THOSE pictures and no others. Think about if they are in the best possible place to be persuasive. Is the size appropriate? Do you feel you need more images? Less?
