Visual GrammarWorkshop

These are some of the work done durin the workshop, using lines, circles and squares to describe movements and creating narative within the combination of shapes. From this exercise I really liked the circles used to create different visual grammar, especially the visuals created to describe density (red dots on top of each other to create density and circles lining up to create density). As a result, I decided to research on visual grammar using circles in real life. First thing that came up to my mind was the japanese flag.

Japan Flag

I believe the Japan flag has its own visual grammar. The red circle on the Japan flag means “Hi-no-de“ which mean the “sunrise”. The sun rise is also a movement of the sun. As a result, Japan flag has a hidden visual grammar itself. From this, I realised that the use of simple shapes such as circles, can create a story/narative, hence a meaning behind the visual grammar. In conclusion, I would like to experiment with circles to create an interesting visual grammar consisting narative and storyline.


While looking throgh the book called Visual Grammar by Christian Laborg, I was very influenced by the drawing of circles and how he uses circles to explain different Visual Grammar. For example on the left, I really admire the different ways he explain the Visual Grammar of density, It is a clear visual and very easy to understand. This in itself is already a storyboard and could be animated.

The whole book uses different shapes to decribe different Visual Grammar and the idea/message does come across.

Since one of the task in this project is to create a one minute film/animation, so I decided to challenge myself to do so.
