B.Reading Comprehension (12 marks)

-Read the following passage then answer the questions below:So travel has always been part of being human. However , few people used to travel much because journeys were long, hard and dangerous. The difference today is that they are short ,easy and safe. As tourists , we just buy our air tickets and book our accommodation through travel agents or on the internet. Or we simply choose a package holiday, which provides everything for one fixed price .Then we pack our luggage ,drive to the airport , get on a plane and away we go! The journeyfrom Africa to Australia took our early ancestors 100,000 years: mine took less than a day. Wonderful! Or is it !You see , our age of mass travel and tourism has brought real problems. Of course ,there is the pollution that planes leave in the sky and that resorts create on the ground .But here ,I`m really talking about the pollution that we individuals cause. It`s truly horrific to see the mess that people sometimes leave in the world`s most beautiful places .And the more who visit ,the worse the problem. As a travel writer ,I suppose I help to create this problem since I persuade people to visit those beautiful places .The thing I want to say to my readers though is this: Wherever you go , leave it as you find it .Take only photographs .leave only footprints. A) Answer the following question: ( 6points )

For example, we had come close to the eradication of polio, and measles under control. However, the global health situation had actually got worse in other ways. TB and malaria were not under control, and AIDS had become a global epidemic. World leaders at the United Nations Millennium Summit therefore agreed new targets. One of those stated that by 2015, “We will have stopped and begun to reduce the spread of AIDS, malaria and other major diseases. Today, many scientists are more pessimistic- and for good reasons. AIDS has now killed over 40 million people and has spread to regions such as Eastern Europe and China. Many African countries face large population declines by 2050 and a life expectancy as low as 32. Moreover, malaria now kills more people than it did 30 years ago. Reading: (12 marks)Travel writer Jason Best looks at the world's biggest industry - travel and tourism. Recently, on a flight from London to Sydney, my in-flight magazine brought me up to date on this amazing industry. First, an advert for Dubai International Airport told me that 'Not long ago just eight million passed through Dubai,' while 'in 2020 we estimate that around 40 million passengers will pass through our doors.' I also read that air trips totaled 1.6 billion in 1999, whereas the figure for 2020 is estimated at 3.2 billion - a flight for half the world’s population! Why do so many of us do it?

Well, humans have always needed to discover new places and possibilities. When as we believe, our ancestors left Africa 160,000 years ago, they spread out around the world. Sixty thousand years ago, they had reached every continent except for frozen Antarctica. We also know about travellers in the Ancient World. For example, the Phoenicians would sometimes sail from the East Mediterranean into the Atlantic and as far north as Britain. Later, the great Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo not only travel, but also wrote wonderful books about their amazing journey. Then, as now, people used to love learning about places far away. So travel has always been part of being human. However, few people used to travel because journeys were long, hard and dangerous. The difference today is that they are short, easy and safe.

As tourists, we just buy our air tickets and book our accommodation through travel agents or in the internet. Or we simply choose a package holiday which provides everything for one fixed price. Then we packed our luggage drive to the airport, get on a plane and away we go! The journey from Africa to Australia took our early ancestors 100,000 years: mine took less than a day. Wonderful!

Our age of mass travel and tourism have brought real problems like pollution that planes leave in the sky, and the mess that people sometimes leaves in the places they visit, and the more who visit, the worse the problem. So, the most important thing that we want to say, wherever you go, leaves it as you find it. Take only photographs leave only footprints.Question number One: (12 points)A. Read the following passage then answer the questions below: Regional trade developed across the Mediterranean Sea thousands of years ago. Traders used to buy and sell goods whose value varied around the region. For example, Phoenician jewellery and Greek pottery had lower values where they were made, and higher values in places where they were harder to get. Traders therefore bought cheaply in one place and sold for more in others. The dangers of sea travel were great, but so too were the chances of getting rich. Those traders lived at a time when a voyage across the Mediterranean often took weeks. Today, though, a flight half-way round the world takes less than a day. Fast transport, together with modern telecommunications, have thrown the world's many regions into one great global economy. The reasons why we trade are still the same. We still buy something from others because we cannot produce it ourselves or cannot produce it as well or as cheaply. The difference is that we now trade world-wide. This is globalization . It means rising standards of living for poorer nations and cheaper products for everyone else. However, unequal production costs around the world create real problems. Chinese wages are particularly low, and manufacturers there can produce extremely cheaply. This means that producers with higher costs in other countries often have to close down and put their employees out of work. Exactly this has happened to the Palestinian shoe industry in Hebron and Nablus. Higher-cost manufacturers can often only stay in business if they move their own manufacturing to China or other low-cost economies. Thanks to fast transport links, they can now produce cheaply there and sell in other, richer parts of the world.

Answer the following questions: ( 4 points)1. Where did regional trade develop thousands of years ago?
