With the Fall Reunion just a week away, there is still time to submit petitions. So far this fall, we are going great guns. This will be the most successful reunion we have had in a very long time. Talk to your fellow Master Masons and invite them to join - it is not too late to submit their petition.

For those who missed the September Stated Meeting, let me tell you what you missed. The motor on the chiller system has been replaced and works like a charm. The main dining room has been repainted and looks great. Just walking into the dining room, you get a warm and fuzzy feeling.

On October 2nd, the Rite Ladies held a Hen and Rooster Party in the warm and fuzzy dining room. They served a very nice luncheon, Elvis made an appearance and held a Silent Auction. Their goal was to raise money to help pay for a new floor in the Main Dining Room. The party was a great success. Brethren, we need to thank all of our ladies for taking on such a task.

There are still many projects to be completed. Slowly but surely, we will give our Cathedral a complete facelift.

Since starting the Cathedral Maintenance Fund, we have had more than a thousand dollars donated. Have you noticed as you come through the front door, the marble steps have been polished and recoated and the renewed mosaic tile with the original two-headed eagle staring up at you? The restoration of the front entrance was donated by Carlos (a member of Anahuac Lodge #81) and Gladys Tolsa, owners of Enviro-Grout, Inc.

When we first joined Masonry, we took an obligation to support our Fraternity with our time and effort. One aspect of our support is our dues which is used to support our Fraternity in all its endeavors: charitable work, presence in the community, and the continuation of the Fraternity.

One of the most difficult parts of my job as Personal Representative, was having to read the names of those Brothers, during the October Stated Meeting, who have

not renewed their dues. We currently have 104 members who have not paid their 2009 and 2010 dues. This amounts to a little over $11,000.00. If every one of those 104 members would bring their account current, it would go a long way in keeping us solvent and allow us to continue our good works.

We cannot continue to carry those who are undecided about paying their dues. Unfortunately, all members who are delinquent as of December 9, 2010 will be suspended as of December 10, 2010.

We NEED all our members to keep our Fraternity strong.

Tucson Knights of St. Andrew By Randal S. Jager, 32°, Venerable Master

Greetings Brethren!

As we draw close to yet another holiday season, I am stunned how quickly time passes. It is far too easy for us to take our time with family, friends, and Brethren for granted. Take the time to appreciate those around you this upcoming holiday season.

Once again, the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew will be very active during the Fall 2010 Reunion. I would like to thank each and every Knight and Squire who volunteered to help. While I do hope the experience will be as rewarding for you as it will be for me. I presume each of us will do our very best to make every part of the Reunion an enjoyable experience for the members of the Class. It is truly wonderful to have a large class and know we will be doing everything in our power to make the beginning of their Scottish Rite career moving and meaningful, which should be our ultimate reward.

I invite all 32° Scottish Rite Masons in the Valley of Tucson who are interested in helping make a difference in our Valley, to consider joining the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew. We serve the Tucson Valley in many ways, and are always looking for active and driven men to welcome into our ranks. You can obtain an application on the Tucson Scottish Rite website at: http://www.TucsonScottishRite.org/ksaapp.pdf, or by contact-ing one of our members.

If you would like to learn more about the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew, feel free to contact me directly at: [email protected].

Hen and Rooster Party By Peggy Atchley

O n behalf of the Rite Ladies, I want to thank everyone who helped make

our first fundraiser a smashing success. To those who purchased tickets and attended the party, to everyone who participated in the 50/50 drawing and especially to those individuals and businesses who graciously donated items to be used in the Silent Auction, Thank You !

Your generous donations allowed us to present a check at the October Stated Meeting to Ill.·. J. Michael Atchley, 33°, Personal Representative, in the amount of:

$3,795.09

We requested this money go toward helping pay for the new flooring in the Main Dining Room.

On a personal note, I want to say thank you and give a big hug to the following ladies who worked very hard these past few months to ensure the success of the Hen and Rooster Party: Fran Lieber (whose idea it was for the Hen and Rooster Party), Marian Hannon, Lynn Jager, Linda Martinez, Debbie Leluan, Donna Landis, Jane Taylor, Mayno Wolfe, Lynndell Lohman, Ruth Hoffman, Jackie Conrad, Janice Creech, Vonda Clark, Edna Sawicki andNorma Sebastian.

Last but not least, what would we have done without our Master of Ceremonies - Ill.·. James W. Sebastian, 33°. What a fantastic job, Jim!

Altan Kol Grotto By James W. Sebastian,

Monarch

What a grea t summer we had. Many Honors have been heaped upon Altan Kol and its Prophets. First, let me say we had a wonderful, well-attended California, Arizona & Nevada Association. The good fellowship was a sight to behold. Many Prophets and their Ladies were in attendance including the Grand Monarch and several of his Grand Line Officers. The Grand Line gave our Prophets a lot of good infor-mation and instruction.

We were also blessed with a Grotto Association with which we are very familiar. First is Russ Downs, Presi-dent from Phoenix and a frequent visitor to Altan Kol meetings and functions. Second, our own Prophet B.T. “Tom” Dingwall, III, is the new First Vice President. Third, Prophet Bill Sneyd was elected Second Vice President and has already been tasked by the Grand Monarch with being our Grand Representative. Fourth, our Secretary, Prophet Rich Kessler, was elected Third Vice President.

The name of the Association has been proposed to change to the South

West Grotto Association (I think the wording is right). There were also several proposed By-Law changes to the Association, which will be taken up by the constituent Grottos at their respective meetings.

A new Grotto has been formed in the Kingman area, with Prophet Dan Cantwell as its leader. This new Grotto will be constituted and receive its Charter on the 21st of November, 2010. There will be more informa-tion forthcoming about this event. There are approximately 30 members who are fired up to bring Grotto fun to the North West corner of Arizona. I believe there are great opportunities in the Tri-State area to be a great success.

On a sadder note, Prophet Bill Nelson has been taken to the hospital with congestive heart failure. We send our love and prayers for his speedy return to our fold. As for me, my knee is getting better each day. I am back to work with very few side effects.

Our November 11th meeting will begin with lunch at noon and the meeting will convene at 1:00pm. We will be honoring our Veterans and those who stand and wait. December 9th, we will have a potluck lunch at

noon and the meeting will begin at 1:00pm. Election of Officers will take place, so be sure to mark your calendars.

As we wind down the year, I would like to give thanks to many of our Prophets and their Ladies who kept me on the straight and narrow. In no particular order they are: Billie and Dorothy Hamilton, Robert and Marian Hannon, Lew and Sharon Irvine, Rich and Bebie Kessler, Paul and Billie Nix, Larry and Jeanne Parton, Ken and Debbie Smith, Bill and Marge Sneyd, Ed and Vivian Wahl, Mike and Peggy Atchley, Al Camacho, Tim Davies and Tiffany, Lou and Helene Fish, Tom and Sharon Dingwall, Jerry and Jane Baker, Mike Bishop, Dave and Alice Haynes, Sid and Debbie Leluan, and last but very far from the least, “she who must be obeyed”, my lovely wife Norma who assists me in everything I do. She is my rock when things do not go as planned. If there ever was a pair where the sum is greater than the parts, it is Norma. She is a constant motivation and support and has been for a very long time. I love you dear and thanks again.

J oin us December 9, 2010 to celebrate the Holidays. Following

dinner, we will be entertained by our very own Bro.·. James E. Wolfe, 32°, and his Lady, Mayno. They will be performing everyones’ favorite Holiday songs and interacting with the audience.

Jim and Mayno started entertaining together 45 plus years ago while still in school.

Mayno performed on television and radio and together they entertained in VA Hospitals.

They formed their duo “Two’s Company” in 1978, performing for several years at Holiday Inns and Supper Clubs five and six nights a week, mostly in Ohio.

Mark your calendars and bring the entire family. This will be a Holiday celebration you won’t want to miss.

Masonic Family Picnic By Ill.·. Craig L. Gross, 33°

The 2010 Masonic Family Picnic at Reid Park sponsored by the Tucson Scottish Rite Bodies is now in the history books. It was a beautiful day and everything seemed to go according to plan. There were approximately 325 in attendance. We had lots of food, fun and fellowship. I understand we even obtained several new members. I hope all of you who attended had a great time. For those who were unable to attend, we hope you will plan to attend next years’ family picnic.

I would be remiss if I did not thank a large number of people who were responsible for the occasion. First, a huge thanks to Ill.·. J. Michael Atchley, 33° - Personal Representative, Valley of Tucson and his Lady Peggy, who found the time and resources to allow us to sponsor the annual picnic. Second, to my Lady Lynda, who was really responsible for most of the planning and organiz-ing needed for this type of event, (she did the work and I got the credit). Others responsible for making this picnic work were: Ill.·. James W. Sebastian, 33° and the cooking crew; Norma Sebastian and the serving crew; Jim Burke and the Sabbar Shrine; the Sabbar Shrine Band and clowns; Barbara Kiernan—WOW Learning Center; the Knights of St. Andrew; Bro.·. Vincent M. Santos, 32°; Bro.·. Paul Nordstrom, 32°, K.·.C.·.C.·.H.·., and a host of others who did the little things which make an activity like this work.

My special thanks goes to all of you who came out to be with us. Without you, it would have been just another day and all our work would have been for naught.

Now is the time to mark your calendar for the 2011 Masonic Family Picnic. The tentative scheduled date is Saturday, October 22nd at Reid Park, Ramadas 18 and 19.

Volunteers, God Bless Them

Many will be shocked to find when the day of judgment nears there’s a special place in heaven

set aside for volunteers.

Furnished with big recliners, satin couches and foot stools.

Where there’s no committee chairmen, no group leaders or car pools.

No eager team that needs a coach, no bazaar and no bake sale.

There will be nothing to staple, not one thing to fold or mail.

Telephone lists will be outlawed, but a finger snap will bring

cool drinks and gourmet dinners and treats fit for a king.

You ask, “Who’ll serve these privileged few and work for all they’re worth?”

Why, all those who reaped the benefits and not once volunteered on Earth.

Master of Kadosh By Bro.·. John W. George, 32°, K.·.C.·.C.·.H.·.

A s we approach the Holiday season, beginning with the ancient festival known in Mexico as Dia de los

Muertos, I am reminded of “the other” Consistory Degree: the 31st, or Inspector Inquisitor.

This degree is the last of several Scottish Rite degrees based on the theme of “Judgment”. In it, one of the oldest archetypes of this idea is explored: The Weighing of the Heart in the Hall of Ma’at, presided over by Osiris and Isis, Tahuti, Anpu and Horus, according to the ancient Egyptian usage. This is the most famous chapter from the so-called Egyptian Book of the Dead, more properly The Book of Coming Forth by Day. In it, the deceased passes a series of ordeals and portals before finally joining the divine retinue; copies had all of the passwords to use and names to drop in order to do so—it was a sort of crib sheet for someone making their way into the Afterlife. In the Judgment, the heart of the deceased is weighed in the balances against the feather of Truth. Throughout the history of Ancient Egypt, most of those who died—certainly all those who could afford it—were interred with a copy, but it was incumbent upon them to know its’ contents as well as have one to hand. After all, what use is a crib sheet if you don’t now the course?

The Book of Coming Forth by Day shares with the Tibetan “Book of the Dead” (the Bardo Thodol, or Liberation by Hearing in the After-Death State) this

unusual distinction of being an instruction manual for the recently deceased (and here you thought it was Tim Burton’s idea…); in the Tibetan book also, the (for lack of a better word) soul of the deceased has to pass a series of ordeals before Moving On. Here again, the one who has died is reminded of what he or she needs to know, by someone reading the book aloud in the presence of his or her earthly remains before they are duly disposed of.

The Tibetan and Egyptian Books, stripped in the one case of Buddhist metaphysics and “magical” trappings in the other, carry this universal message: Don’t wait until you’re dead. Be prepared here and now to make your postmortem proficiency. Once again, the Degrees of the Scottish Rite have used an ancient and seemingly complex legend to illustrate a timely and deceptively simple principle:

Make sure your affairs are in order. Be ready for your life to be judged. Pray and meditate every day. Live mindfully. Be kind. Treat life as a prepa-ration for what comes after.

Get right with God—whomever you conceive of God to be.

Thanks and gratitude to all who supported, or at least tolerated, my year as Master of Kadosh: Peggy and Ill.·. J. Michael Atchley, 33°, the Knights of St. Andrew and most especially Bro.·. Bobby Creech, 32°, K.·.C.·.C.·.H.·., who wore the collar all those times while I presided over the Northern Column.

Happy Holidays to all, and God bless us everyone!

The Kissing Pillow By Mrs. Leigh Shafer, Sedona, AZ

The Kissing Pillow project was started in Texas in 2005, by an Embroiderers’ Guild of America member, Geraldine Trappey. These hand-stitched little pillows are designed to be used as a keepsake for our military and for the children and loved ones left behind by soldiers departing for service.

The soldier should kiss the pillow and give one to each one of his or her loved ones to hold onto until he or she returns from war and, the families should kiss the pillow their soldier takes with him or her. The backings are differ-ent so they can be easily identified by each family member.

We hope the pillows will be a comfort during the lonely times for both the family and the soldier. They were lovingly stitched with gratitude for their service to our country by members of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Inc., and the American Needlepoint Guild, Inc. Each one takes about four hours to stitch and make into a pillow.

In August, Leigh delivered 1,000 Kissing Pillows to the 3d Battalion, 3d Group, S p e c i a l F o r c e s (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg. FRG Representative, Tina Bastien, Major Sattelmeyer and his aid accepted the pillows and handed us Certificates of Appreciation.

Major Sattelmeyer asked me to please convey his heartfelt thanks to each and e v e r y o n e w h o worked to produce the pillows. “God bless you all”, he said, “the soldiers and their families will never forget this very generous gift.”

TUCSON IS EQUIPPED FOR

ARTIST RECITALS IN

SCOTTISH RITE CATHEDRAL Tucson, Ariz., which has a group of musical people and lovers of organ music who cherish high ambitions, has improved its organ facilities by the reconstruction and enlargement of the organ in the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The work has been completed and plans are being made for a number of recitals by prominent concert organ-ists, several of whom have been heard in the new center of culture in the south-western state during the years since the original instrument was installed. Professor Henry N. Switten, head of the organ department at the University of Arizona, played the first recital on the reconstructed instrument Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6. In 1915 the Scottish Rite Cathedral, which houses all the Masonic bodies of Tucson and is the seat of the Scottish Rite work in Arizona, purchased an organ from the California Organ Company of Van Nuys, Cal. It was constructed under the direction of the company’s superintendent, Stanley W. Williams, and was voiced by him. The organ was a limited three-manual and intended to serve for the embellish-ment of ceremonials. The idea of using it for recital purposes was not then considered. The instrument was beautifully voiced and its mechanical features were first-class in every respect. During the twenty years that have passed since the installation of this organ the city has grown. The University of Arizona has developed into an outstanding school with 2,500 students, and its College of Fine Arts, under the direction of Dean Arthur

Olaf Andersen, with a fine newly-established organ department under Henry N. Switten, is rapidly taking its place as a well-equipped music school. This, with such other organizations as the Saturday Morning Musical Club, with its Temple of Music; the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and the empha-sis on music in the schools, has had the effect of creating a demand for organ music. As this organ was the only one approaching concert dimen-sions available, it has been played by such artists as Bonnet, Dupré, Germani, Courboin, Christian, Goldthwaite and others. The audito-rium of the cathedral resembles a large music room, the flat floor being covered with brilliant red carpeting, on which the movable console is placed, surrounded by comfortable chairs for the audience. This intimate setting, with the fact that the organ is well placed, has made it popular with artists and audiences. As a result of the interest displayed by the music-loving public in organ recitals, the cathedral authorities decided to have the instrument enlarged sufficiently to make possible thoroughly adequate performance of the larger organ works. A year ago a committee, consisting of Chandler Goldthwaite, Stanley W. Williams of the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company and John M. McBride, the cathedral organist, worked out a plan of im-provements and additions, which resulted in rebuilding the organ. It is a tribute to Mr. Williams that after a lapse of twenty years he should have been selected to rebuild an organ which he originally planned and erected in 1916. Due credit should also be given Mr. McBride, who for twenty years has played this instru-ment as the official cathedral organist and who has sponsored many of the recitals that have been given.

Although Mr. McBride has been by profession a mortgage and insurance broker since early manhood, he has been an ardent organist and has played his part in the development of Tucson as a center of musical influence and in the promotion of better church and organ music. Arizona is to be congratulated upon the interest its Masonic bodies, under the leadership of Harry A. Drachman, have taken and on the manner in which they have fostered the cause of good organ music. John M. McBride, organist of the Scottish Rite Cathedral, is a native of Louisville, Ky., received his musical training there and played for five years at the First Presbyterian Church of that city. In 1904 he moved to Tucson and for seven years played the only organ in the community, a portable Kimball, in the Congregational Church. He has two sons and a daughter who have made their mark as musicians, Heloise McBride has for some years been the organist of the First Congregational Church and is a music teacher in the schools. She is a graduate of the College of Fine Arts of the University of Arizona and now is working for a master’s degree at Columbia University. One son, John A. McBride, is business manager of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra of sixty pieces and plays first horn. Another son, Robert, holds a master’s degree from the College of Fine Arts of the University of Arizona and is teaching in the music department of Bennington College, Vermont. He plays oboe, clarinet and piano and his composi-tions have been played by the New York Philharmonic Symphony and by the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. Submitted by Bro.·. Andrew W. Smith, 32°
