THE ESSENCE OF NUTRITION AND EXERCISE

MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to provide an educational program on Nutrition and Exercise to the members of the Girls Club. Our program
will provide the girls with information that would be useful to them both now
and in the future.
GOALS To accurately show the participants how
to test their heart rate To assist the participants in
acknowledging that exercise can be done in a variety of ways
Increase the participants knowledge about the food pyramid and its benefits
Achieve the ability to make a proper nutritious meal when picking items off of a menu
TARGET POPULATION
The Girl’s Club of East St. Louis
The participants were ages 8-13
They came from two housing projects in East St. Louis, Roosevelt and Griffin
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
Obesity rates in children and teens have doubled in the past 30 years (NIH Medline Plus)
“17% of American children ages 2-19 are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight” (NIH Medline Plus).
“Almost half of Americans aged 12-21 do not engage in vigorous physical activity on a regular basis, and the average teen spends 28 hours each week engaging in activities that require no physical exertion, such as talking on the phone, playing video games or surfing the internet” (The Forum for Family and Consumer Issues)

OBJECTIVE 1.1At the End of the program, 60% of the program participants will demonstrate
calculating their baseline heart rate

program participants will be able to choose from a list, activities that qualify
as exercises that raise the heart rate
Goal: 90% Achieved: 13%
