The Vail Valley, of course, is known for its winter sports, but it's just as popu-lar as a summer vacation destination, too, with such activities as hiking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, tennis, and of course, playing golf. 431 Eagle Drive, Avon, 800-341-8051 What's the best way to describe Eagle Vail Golf Club? A river golf course? A mountain golf course? Actually, it's a little bit of both. It's also a pretty golf course ... and pretty tough. The 18-hole Bruce Devlin and Roger von Hagge design, which opened in 1974, isn't a long golf course by today's standards, but there isn't a lot of room

for error. The only true mountain design for a public golf course in the Vail Valley places a high priority on shot placement, and you should as well if you want to have a good score. The tee shot at the par-5 first hole is elevated about 75 feet, there's the red barn at No. 2 (part of the area's ag-ricultural heritage) and there are plenty of elevation changes and breathtaking views as you make your way around. The golf course features flat, tree-lined fairways and medium-sized greens, both of which are well protected by numerous bunkers.

The golf course plays through towering trees that demand accuracy. There are also several beaver ponds throughout the golf course that come into play on several holes.
