Yves Saint Laurent: Icons of Fashion Design / Icons of Photography, acclaimed by a criticas an “intoxicating book”, remains the most attractive homage to the uncrowned king of hautecouture. Pictures taken by the world’s leading fashionphotographers trace the success of Saint Laurent’s designs, which, since conquering the fashion worldfive decades ago, have caused sensation after sensation each year. The book also constitutes ahigh-quality review of fashion photography over a period of forty years, collecting 135 YSL dresses inimages created by fashion photography’s greatest20th-century heroes.A highly sensitive man of great talent, Yves Saint Laurent was equipped with an infallible instinct for reading the aesthetic signs of the times, and thisenabled him to have a profound effect on fashion inthe second half of the 20th century.

Cy Twombly’s eminent œuvre underwent several transformations over the decades. Probably the mostincisive of these was his encounter with Mediterranean culture, which led to Twombly’s retreat from the New York art scene: from 1957 on, he lived in Rome and shuttled between Italy and the US. The world of the Greek gods, bright Mediterranean light, and the history, literature, and mythology of the Occident found their way intohis art. On ever larger canvases, the drama ofmankind was transformed into a sensual and poeticvision of color, drawing, and scription.Editor Heiner Bastian has now added a final volumeto our Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings, coveringthe years from 2008 until Twombly’s death in Rome in 2011. It includes, inter alia, the series of monumental rose paintings that occupied the artistduring the last years of his life.

Cy Twombly, born in Lexington, Virginia, in 1928, entered the stage of contemporary art with his drawings. His nervous line making distinguished him from all his colleagues who in the 50s and 60swere involved in Abstract Expressionism. His tumbl ing and nervous markings opened new psychological spaces to a personal and very conceptual art. At first mistaken for something between graffiti and écriture auto matique, Cy Twombly’s graphic notes eventually transformedinto huge canvases of paintings in which he incorporated these notes as a maelstrom of emotional states. The Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings, edited by Nicola Del Roscio, is published in successive volumes. Volume 4, covering the years 1964–1969, features Twombly’s first whorl works—the artist’s response to Conceptual and Minimal Art—and his famous series Letters of Resignation.

Her flamboyant beauty captured by photographer Berenice Abbott made her an admired figure among American ex patriatessuch as Gertrude Stein and William SomersetMaugham. Candida Höfer: Libraries

Libraries are a book publisher’s dream. Since nobodyphotographs libraries as beautifully as Höfer, it seemed only natural to dedicate one of her publications to the splendid and intimate cathedralsof knowledge across Europe and the US: the Escorialin Spain, the Whitney Museum in New York, Villa Medici in Rome, the Hamburg University library, theBibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, the MuseoArcheólogico in Madrid, and Pierpont Morgan Libraryin New York, to name just a few. Almost completely devoid of people, as is Candida Höfer’s trademark, these pictures radiate a comforting serenity that is exceptional in contemporary photography. Now available in an unchanged reprint.

Jean-Baptiste Mondino: Smoke 3

Jean-Baptiste Mondino, one of the greatest commercial photographers of our days and certainlythe grand maître of advertising and fashion photography in France, is publishing his fourth Schirmer/Mosel book, entitled Smoke 3. For centuries, smoking had been a cultural habit of elegance, coolness, and allure. Only recently it deteriorated to a kind of suicidal vice. Mondino’sbeautiful pictures of beautiful smokers challenge thepolitical correctness in healthcare and physical education. One of the last documents of smoking infashion, film, and advertising, Mondino reminds us of the stylishness of smoking before it was bannedfrom screens, salons, and printed pages and relegated to a rough life on the streets.

What does Hanover have to do with the United Kingdom and British Magnum photographer MartinParr? Quite a lot, actually! Firstly, Hanover is celebrating the 300th anniversary of the coronationof Hanoverian Prince-Elector George Louis as KingGeorge I of Great Britain and Ireland. Secondly, theSprengel Museum Hanover felt that no one was better suited than Martin Parr when it came to takinga tongue-in-cheek look at local Anglo-German history. At the museum’s behest Parr set out in search ofthings British in and around Hanover. He visited theLady Di Club in Hameln; the “Britfest” in Paderborn;the reenactment group “King’s German Legion” inHanover; a local celebration in honor of the Queen’sbirthday; the world’s largest marksmen’s festival, heldannually in Hanover; and British garrisons that werepreparing to pull out. Under the fraternal motto “Welove Britain!” the upshot of his photographic questcan be viewed at the Sprengel Museum beginning inOctober 2014 and in the accompanying catalog.
