The urinary system is made up of organs in the body concerned with regulating volume and chemical makeup of blood, maintaining the proper balance between water and salt and between acids and bases.

Other renal functions include: Gluconeogenesis during prolong fasting. Producing the hormone renin and

erythropoietin. Metabolizing vitamin D to it active form.

Doctors, nurses, physician assistants and nursing aides use medical abbreviations to share important information about their patients.

Medical abbreviation is used by health professionals to save time when recording data.

Some Urinary System Medical Abbreviations.

Abbreviation: Cath. Definition: Catheterization (Cath.)- In

urinary catheterization, a lubricated letex, polyurethane, or silicon catheter (tube) is inserted through the urethra and into the urinary bladder for the purpose of withdrawing or inserting dye.

Complications for using catheterization may include :Urinary tract infection, Kidney infection and urethra injuries.

Abbreviation: Cysto. Definition: Cysto. Is a medical

abbreviation for Cystoscopy, an instrument equipped with light to examined the interior of the urinary bladder and the ureter .It is also called Lithoscope and commonly used when there is unexplained symptoms in bladder, urethra and ureter. It can lead to infection, bladder injuries and other side effects when not properly used.

Abbreviation: UTI

. Definition: UTI. Is an abbreviation for urinary tract infection and basically involve the infection of the bladder, urethra, ureter, and the kidneys.

Causes of UTIs: This is an infection cause by bacteria, fungi, and parasites (trichomonas). E. coli, a bacteria responsible for 80% of urinary infections. Females have a high risk of getting UTIs as compared to men.

Symptoms of UTIs include: Genital discharge, Abdominal pain, Cloudy/Dark urine, and sometimes unpleasant odor.

Abbreviation: RP.

Definition: Retrograde pyelogram (RP) is a diagnostic X- ray in which dye is inserted through the urethra to the outline of the bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis.

Why RP test? This test is usually used to diagnose kidney stones and tumors, or to see them more clearly to asses what treatments needs to be offered to resolve tumor and stones.

Possible Complications: Exposure to radiation, Allergic reaction, and urinary tract infection.

Abbreviation: BUN.

Definition: Blood urea nitrogen ( BUN) is a blood test to measure kidney function by level of nitrogenous waste(urea) that is in blood . It can also be used to measure renal function.

Why BUN: To check if kidney is working properly. To assess the extent of damage to kidney. To see if treatment is working.
