NEWSLETTER 23/24 February 2019
SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME/C READINGS: Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23; 1 Corinthians 15:45-49
GOSPEL: Luke 6:27-38
Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.
TODAY’S Gospel offers us further challenges. Perhaps one of the most difficult lessons to learn is forgiveness of those whom we consider our enemies, those who have wronged us. As challenging as this may be, the Gospel calls us to a very high standard: we must be merciful as God is merciful. If such perfection can become a reality in our lives, we will be able to forgive. Paul assures us that we can indeed attain such perfection, not by ourselves, but through the power of the risen Lord whose image we bear.
Paul plays with the theology of creation. In the beginning, we were made like the first Adam, earthly, limited, weak, concerned about the things of this world, and committed to our own well being. Through baptism we have been fashioned after the image of the second Adam, Christ the risen Lord. Being like Christ, we become godlike, empowered with his saving power, transformed with him into new beings. It is now in our power, which is really the power of the resurrection, to be merciful as God is merciful. In the risen Lord we experience a mystical transformation. From now on, all of our actions can flow from this new reality.
Transformed by the power of the resurrection, we are capable of unprecedented good works. We can live without retaliation; we can render good for evil. We can be prodigal in our generosity toward others; we can relinquish any rights of proprietorship that we might enjoy. We can live with others without unfairly judging them. We can be like God, boundless in our forgiveness.

Social Justice/ LLL/Share Our World
The February meeting focussed on the Catholic Social Teaching “Human Dignity”. The teaching on Human Dignity states that “each and every person has value, are worthy of great respect and
must be free from slavery, manipulation and exploitation”.
With a particular focus on the Aged during our reflection and discussion, our group has decided to put a submission to the Royal Commission on Aged Care as well as the Queensland Government re the Aged Care, End of Life and Palliative Care Enquiry. At the heart of our submission, will be the emphasis on Human Dignity.
We ask parishioners to contribute towards our submission by forwarding to us your views/opinions/case studies or personal experiences by 30 March, 2019. We will place a box in each Church (commencing 2/3 March) where you can place your comments, alternatively, we are setting up an email account for these comments for your convenience and it will be available soon.
Your comments will be anonymous, as we will put together all comments as part of a submission from the parish. Please participate in this action as stated in Encyclical “Mater et Magistra”(1961) “The power to participate in political processes is essential to the preservation and development of human dignity.”

♫ PROCESSIONAL: A TRUSTING PSALM Refrain: Lord let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you.
2. The word of the Lord means a patient, gentle God. His love can never grow weary. His mercy is as though our sins have never been, if we can place our trust in him. (Refrain)
3. The word of the Lord is fire burning strong His love can never grow weary. His will seek and save the lost until we all return, so let us place our trust in him. (Refrain)

FIRST READING: Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23 RESP. PSALM: THE LORD IS KIND AND MERCIFUL Response: The Lord is kind and merciful.
1. My soul, give thanks to the Lord, all my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. R/
2. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals everyone of your ills, who redeems your life from the grave, who crowns you with love and compassion. R/
3. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. He does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults. R/
4. As far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his sons, the Lord has pity on those who fear him. R/

GOSPEL: Luke 6;27-38 ♫ COMMUNION: SHEPHERD OF SOULS 1. Shepherd of souls, in love, come feed us, life giving bread for
hungry hearts! To those refreshing waters lead us where dwells that grace your peace imparts. May we, the wayward in your fold, by your forgiveness rest consoled.
2. Life giving vine, come feed and nourish, strengthen each branch with life divine; ever in you O may we flourish, fruitful the branches of the vine. Lord, may our souls be purified so that in Christ we may abide.
4. Following you, O Lord, who led them, multitudes thronged the mountain side; filled with compassion, Lord, you fed them, fed them with loaves you multiplied. Come, feed us now, O Lord, we pray; life giving bread give us this day.
5. Father, who fed the Hebrew nation, giving them manna from the sky, give now the bread of our salvation, that we who eat shall never die. We are your people, God, in need; may we on living bread now feed.
6. Help us, dear Lord, prepare a dwelling worthy of you who made us all; cleanse then our hearts, our guilt dispelling, purify us who heed your call. “Take this and eat” were words you said, giving yourself to be our bread.

RECESSIONAL HYMN: GOD OF PEACE 1. Lord of life and Lord of nations, Giving
peace, you make us one, heart of flesh for heart of stone, break the walls of all divisions. Your kingdom come, with this its sign: Our song this prayer let peace now reign.
2. Lengths of love beyond all measure, heights of love which now do call, breadth of love as room for all, depths of love where hides the treasure; Through Christ, our Way, we find true peace, a world made whole in God’s embrace.
3. Visions new and ancient dreaming see the love beyond all death: New the heavens, new the earth, promise of the kingdom coming. Through Christ the wounds of all this world in God’s own peace will then be healed.
