NEWSLETTER 26/27 January 2019
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME/C READINGS: Nehemiah 8:2-6, 8-10; 1 Corinthians 12:12-30
GOSPEL: Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21
Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.
‘The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me.’
The first part of today’s Gospel is in fact the opening sentence of
Luke where he sets out his goal, which is to give an orderly
account of recent events. Theophilus is a code word made up of
two Greek words, God and Love, so in fact Luke is writing to all
those who love God.
Having told us Luke’s goal, the Gospel then moves to chapter 4 where Jesus
announces his goal within the synagogue of his home town, Nazareth. Jesus
deliberately selects the text from Isaiah 61, so if we want to understand Luke’s story
of Jesus we need to understand this text. Jesus has a mission to the poor, to the
outcasts, the alienated, the ones society despises, the ‘down and outers’, the ones
living in darkness and pain. Jesus’ role is to tell these people, who feel most unloved
and rejected, ‘You are not despised by God; God has not rejected you.’ This is what
is meant by ‘the Lord’s year of favour.’ This year is the great fiftieth year of jubilee
liberation, when slaves are to be released, when debts are to be written off and
people are allowed to return home. Jesus says, ‘God keeps Jubilee. Your debts to
God are written off, do not let guilt and fear enslave you, come home to a welcoming
God.’
If we can understand that this is the goal Jesus announces then we will understand
why in Luke’s Gospel he spends so much time with sinners and outcasts. What
Jesus announces in Nazareth he will then live out, to the great shock of his family
and friends.
What might Jesus’ mission be for you?
Bethany: A Grief Support Group
A Ministry of Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Catholic Parish
Our Tasks: We aim to minister to members of our parish by:
Supporting those experiencing grief
Visiting or phoning, on behalf of the parish, bereaved families, who are assured of the sympathy of the parish
Offering Hospitality by being available to provide refreshments follow-ing a funeral
Inviting next of kin to an annual prayer and afternoon tea in memory of their loved ones
Prepare and celebrate Eucharist annually on the first Saturday in No-vember to commemorate the death of loved ones
Preparing a social event ending in Advent Prayer for people who have lost a spouse during the previous twelve months
Sending a card to families on the first anniversary of death.
We do this as a team. Not everybody does everything. The jobs are shared around according to people’s time and availability. Can you lend your hand to even a small activity, eg baking for a funeral morning tea; serving a cuppa after a funeral; being part of the organising team meeting once a month. They are not difficult tasks when shared by more people. Even if you are working you might be able to bake something or make sandwiches for different occasions.
Many hands make light work!
Please call the parish office, 3849 7158, if you think you could assist in any way, or add your name to the blue sheets in each church.

Parish Social Justice,
Lifelong Learning and
Share Our World Group
Welcome to 2019 and thank you for your support in 2018, especially your generosity with all our collections and support for the various agencies. This year, we are looking at doing things differently and extend a warm invitation for all in our community to get involved. Justice is an integral part of our Christian faith and we are called ”to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with our God”. (Micah 6:8).
Our aim is to focus on one of the Catholic Social Teaching Principles each month. On the first Sunday, we will inform you of the principle that will be our focus at our monthly meeting. (2nd Thursday of the month at 7pm, St Bernard’s). We hope that interested parishioners will attend so that together we can unpack the principle and look at ways that we can be involved in bringing about justice for others.
We would love to grow our group and share the wisdom of others.
Our first meeting on 14 February will look at the Catholic Social Teaching: Respect for Human Dignity, particularly focussing on the aged/elderly in our community.
Everyone can make a difference through prayer, action or support of
our activities. Further information: Anne George 0438 552 996.

Parish Pastoral
Council 2019
Happy New Year and welcome back to what looks like a very promising year.
The PPC will meet on January 30, at 7.00 pm to review 2018 and plan
for the year ahead.
We will be setting goals for the coming year and ask if you have anything you would like to add to the conversation. Please contact the Chair, Allan James or any of the PPC members.
We have received the resignation of Robert Baldi who is stepping down for work reasons. Robert has contributed enormously to our parish and will continue to do so but not in the formal capacity as PPC member or Chair of the St Bernard’s Community Meeting. We thank him for his generosity and wish him well in the future.
Journeying in

Please keep our Catechumens Barbara and Lewis and candidates Kevin and Sally, in your prayers as they journey towards full Initiation at Easter.
May the Holy Spirit walk with them as they discern and engage in their relationship with God, themselves
