You have great faith! The first reading opens with a double imperative: Ob- serve justice; Do righteousness! This word-pair enun- ciates Israels primary ethical obligation, which is social responsibility. This imperative is followed by a twofold form of divine promise: Salvation will come; Righteous- ness will be revealed. The language presumes a cove- nant relationship. Some outside the community have shown their desire to become part of it. They may be for- eigners, but both internally and externally they are one with the community of believers. In response, God invites them into the liturgical life of the community. They are encouraged to proceed to Gods holy mountain. God is now accessible to all. The psalm begins with an adaptation of the first words of the blessing used by Aaron and his descendants (v.2; see Nm 6:24-26). This suggests that the favours once promised to that priestly family are now sought for the entire people. Gods goodness will enhance God's reputation among other nations. They will conclude that only a mighty and magnanimous God is able to secure such good fortune. The good fortune of one nation is testimony to the salvific activity of God, which in turn becomes the occasion of salvation for all the earth. Thus one nation becomes the source of blessing for all. Although Paul is proud to be known as the apostle to the Gentiles’, he contin- ues to insist on Israelite privilege. Using a rabbinic form of argumentation, he explains that if the Jewsrejection of the gospel brought reconciliation to the rest of the world, how much more will their acceptance of the gospel effect? After all, they were Gods special people, and it was to them that God granted extraordinary gifts. If God has shown mercy to those who originally worshipped other gods, surely God will show mercy to Gods own people. The Gentiles have no reason to feel superior, for both Jew and Gentile have sinned. Both are shown mercy, not because they earned it, but because God is gracious. The gospel story addresses several important issues: crossing territorial and cultural boundaries; women and men in public social exchange; the Christian mission to the Gentiles; and faith. It also raises important questions: Why does Jesus enter pagan territory in the first place? Why does he initially withhold his healing power? First Jesus himself disregards territorial boundaries. We are not told why. Then the woman disregards appropriate social decorum (she speaks to a man who is a stranger) and pleads for the healing of her daughter. She even disregards his initial rebuff, thus showing remarkable faith. Moved by this faith, Jesus is forced beyond the limited confines of his own cultural experience. He accedes to her wishes and heals her daughter. Adapted from © Dianne Bergant, CSA: LiturgyHelp.com

‘You have great faith!’

The first reading opens with a double imperative: Ob-serve justice; Do righteousness! This word-pair enun-ciates Israel’s primary ethical obligation, which is social responsibility. This imperative is followed by a twofold form of divine promise: Salvation will come; Righteous-ness will be revealed. The language presumes a cove-nant relationship. Some outside the community have shown their desire to become part of it. They may be for-eigners, but both internally and externally they are one with the community of believers. In response, God invites them into the liturgical life of the community. They are encouraged to proceed to God’s holy mountain. God is now accessible to all.

The psalm begins with an adaptation of the first words of the blessing used by Aaron and his descendants (v.2; see Nm 6:24-26). This suggests that the favours once promised to that priestly family are now sought for the entire people. God’s goodness will enhance God's reputation among other nations. Using a rabbinic form of argumentation, he explains that if the Jews’ rejection of the gospel brought reconciliation to the rest of the world, how much more will their acceptance of the gospel effect? After all, they were God’s special people, and it was to them that God granted extraordinary gifts. If God has shown mercy to those who originally worshipped other gods, surely God will show mercy to God’s own people. Continuing the

Journey

Did you know that during the lockdown time we have tried to keep in touch with many people and one group in particular. At the time of shut-down we had four people who had seriously undertaken a journey in faith to come to know and belong to Christ. You may remember, Denise and Heather, our Catechumens Elect, were to be Baptised, Confirmed and receive First Holy Communion at our Easter ceremonies. Rodney, a faithful Baptised candidate was preparing to be received into our Catholic Faith. Sasenka who was enquiring was ready to be Accepted into the Order of Catechumens. Fortunately we were able to celebrate this at St Catherine’s at one of our first weekday Masses. During this time we also had another enquirer, Shahram who is seeking to connect with our Christian faith with a journey to full initiation. Behind this small group of people are faithful supporters and sponsors who have been supported by our RCIA Team. As we navigate our way through COVID19, may I ask for prayers for Denise, Heather, Rodney, Sasenka and Shahram so that we may be able to celebrate their steps on the journey with joy and surrounded by a loving community.

Registration is essential. To register please call the Parish Office on 3849 7158 or email

[email protected] between 9.00 am and 12 noon Monday to Thursday.

WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED Especially Raymond Hession, John Dwyer, Jessie Cobbo, Pieter Tuytel, Sheila Kunkel, Alexander Sammut, June Cullen, Alan Stevens, who have died recently. Also Thomas McNamara, Michael McNamara, Norma Shanks, Dr Hilary & Cleta De Souza, Rita Galea, Simon Tinh, Gus Sim, Laura Sim, Doreen Laverty, Thelma Mottram, Tamara Rushton, Kevin Bunce, Clare Morgan, Harry Stewart, Alex Snashall, Cathie Sammon whom we remember.

Holy Thursday at Home

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

PARTS OF THE MASS gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm PS 66 R: O God, let all the nations praise you!

1. O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shed its light upon us. So will your ways be known upon earth and all nations learn your saving help. (R.)

2. Let the nations be glad and exult for you rule the world with justice. With fairness you rule the peoples, you guide the nations on earth. (R.)

3. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. May God still give us his blessing till the ends of the earth revere him. (R.)

Gospel Acclamation John 15:26. 27 Alleluia, alleluia!

Jesus preached the Good News of the kingdom,

Jesus preached the Good News of the kingdom,

and healed those who were sick. Alleluia!

Apostles creed I believe in God, the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC Acclamation When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.

READINGS: Is 22:19-23;

Rom 11:33-36

GOSPEL: Mt 16:13-20

ENTRANCE PROCESSION: Gather Us In

1. Here in this place, new light is streaming, now is the darkness, vanished away. See, in this space, our fears and our dreamings, Brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in, the lost and forsaken, Gather us in, the blind and the lame, Call to us now, and we shall awaken. We shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young, our lives are a myst'ry, We are the old who yearn for your face, We have been sung throughout all of hist'ry, Called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in, the rich and the haughty, Gather us in, the proud and the strong. Give us a heart so meek and so lowly, Give us the courage to enter the song.

Here we will take the wine and the water, Here we will take the bread of new birth, Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, Call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, Give us to eat the bread that is you; Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion, Lives that are holy and hearts that are true.
