CNUCOP SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

1. Introduction.

The California Northstate University College of Pharmacy offers a number of scholarships and awards to

qualifying students enrolled in our four-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program. Scholarship and

award criteria vary but are typically based on academic performance, financial need, community outreach

involvement, and professionalism or leadership skills. Please review the scholarship criteria listed below

to determine eligibility. Please see the list on the next page.

2. How to Use this Document.

This document lists and details information regarding scholarships/awards available through: 1) the

Northern California Education Foundation (NCEF), 2) California Northstate University’s Office of the

President, and Office of the Dean. Scholarship or awards are listed and the eligibility criteria, award

amount (if applicable) and tentative deadlines are outlined. It is the responsibility of the student to verify

criteria, eligibility and deadlines as these are subject to change.

3. General Application Procedure for CNUCOP Scholarships & Awards.

For awards/scholarships ranked by the Scholarships and Awards Committee, students must individually

note, the Northern California Education Foundation (NCEF) offers the most merit based and need based

scholarships, and any student that would like to qualify for a merit based or need based scholarship should

Foundation is typically in early spring.

NCEF SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

The Northern California Education Foundation (NCEF) provides financial scholarship opportunities to all

students attending California Northstate University. Six “Admissions Scholarships” of $1,000 each are

offered to incoming students with high cumulative GPAs. Additionally, Academic Achievement Scholarships

and Tuition Assistance Scholarships are also available to all CNU students. For more information regarding

CNU SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

A. PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIPS

To qualify for the President’s Scholarship, students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and also

demonstrate leadership qualities. Please apply for the scholarship by writing a brief (<500 word) essay

describing how you have demonstrated leadership inside or outside of the classroom and email two copies

(one identified and one de-identified) to [email protected] . In addition, please drop off a physical

copy of your unofficial transcript to Dr. Malhotra’s office 255.

B. SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DEAN, COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

1. CNUCOP Dean’s Scholarship (Deadline: March; Donors: Dean, Faculty)

a. Criteria:

i. The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

ii. The student must express interest and show evidence of involvement in academic

activities related to pursuing a career in academia

b. Documentation Required

i. Cover letter including name of scholarship you are applying to along with student name

and ID number, and pharmacy class

ii. An essay of 500 words or less describing your desire to pursue a career in academia and

related activities you have participated in to pursue this goal; please submit a de-

identified copy as well

iii. Unofficial or official transcripts: the applicant should request that the Registrar submit

unofficial or official transcripts to [email protected].

2. The “Rising Star” Award (Deadline: Spring 2019)

a. Award: One $500 scholarship

b. Criteria

i. Must be a P3

ii. Dramatic improvement in grades from P1 year to P3 year

c. Required Documentation i. Please write a brief (max 500 word) essay providing an explanation for what you

did to improve your academic performance during your pharmacy career. Email a copy

of the essay with your name and ID number and a second de-identified copy to

3. Student of the Year

Every year the College of Pharmacy selects a P1, a P2, and P3 student that have displayed leadership and

professionalism in the classroom to receive the coveted Student of the Year scholarships. Faculty members

nominate students. The faculty member should submit a brief (<500 words) description of how the student

has demonstrated professionalism/leadership in the classroom and explain why you feel the student deserves

the scholarship (please email Dr. Malhotra). The student must have a GPA of 3.0 to qualify for the scholarship.

Please submit your nomination by March 2nd, 2019 to allow the Scholarships and Awards Committee enough

time to rank the nominations. Students are encouraged to reach out to a faculty member of their choice if they

feel they are eligible for this award and work with the faculty member to apply.

1.2 Award description: This scholarship is sponsored by the CVS Health and National Medical Fellowships

(NMF) and was established to support African American students who are in financial need and display a

commitment to practicing in a community setting. This award provides $2,500 to one student pursuing a

doctoral degree in pharmacy (Pharm.D.).

1.3 Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible to apply for this award, all of the following must apply:

1. Proof of U.S. citizenship or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) approval letter

2. Currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. pharmacy school

3. African American descent/heritage

4. Financial need

5. Commitment to serving medically underserved communities

• Applicants must have completed at least one academic year in their professional pharmacy

program at the time the Scholarship is awarded.

Applicants must be in good academic standing as validated by the office of Student Affairs

at the time of submitting the application.

• Students who have received the Joseph H. Beckerman Memorial Scholarship in the past are not eligible

to apply.

• Students may only apply for one of the Scholarships awarded by the Foundation each year.

Applications for more than one program will not be accepted.

2.4 Criteria (from last academic year, subject to change for 2019) Criteria for the Scholarship will be used in the recipient selection process. Applicants will be

evaluated based on the following evenly weighed criteria:

a. Health-System Pharmacy Practice or Management. Applicants must demonstrate leadership in

health-system pharmacy practice or management as demonstrated by work experience,

professional achievement in hospital/health-system rotations, commitment to service, and

mentoring of others.

b. Professional Organization Leadership: Evidence of involvement, demonstrated accomplishments,

and leadership position(s) held in CSHP or other student professional organizations and/or

community service.

c. Personal Leadership Attributes: Demonstrated by testaments from student peers and professionals

in letters of recommendation and essay response. Attributes that should be emphasized include

commitment to others, motivation and enablement of others to get involved, successful leadership

in a team atmosphere, excellence in leading by example, and the display of leadership through

action.

d. Essay: The following criteria will be evaluated; originality, grammar, clearness of thought, well

developed reasoning and effective organization that supports the arguments,

• Two (2) letters of recommendation, including at least one (1) from a faculty member. All

letters of recommendation should address the applicant’s ability to meet the Scholarship

criteria.

4. CSHP: Joseph H. Beckerman Memorial Scholarship

3.1 Deadline: TBA for the 2019 Award

• Available to Class of 2017, 2018, and 2019

• Applicants must be CSHP members in good standing.

• Applicants must be in the top 50% of their class relative to GPA.

• Applicants to self-report that they are in the top 50% of class by GPA (or other relevant

grading system).

• Applicants must have completed at least one academic year in their

• Students who have received this award in the past are not eligible to apply.

3.4 Criteria:

Criteria for the Scholarship will be used in the recipient selection process. Applicants will be

Health-System Pharmacy Practice Achievement: Evidence of interest and/or leadership in health-system pharmacy practice as demonstrated by work experience, professional achievement in hospital/health-system rotations, completion of a research project, and/or other special projects or professional accomplishments.

professional organizations and/or community service.

4.3 Criteria:

i. NAPPSA member

ii. Good academic standing (GPA ≥ 3.0)

4.4 Documentation required

a. An essay of 500 words or less (applications with essays over 500 words will not be

considered)

b. Essay should reflect applicant's personal story including reasons why the applicant believes

he or she should be selected, participation in NAPPSA activities, how NAPPSA helps in

applicant's professional growth, applicant's vision of the NAPPSA of tomorrow, and

professional activities outside of NAPPSA.

14. American Medical Resource Institute, AMRI

Deadline: To be considered for the 2019 scholarship award, the essay must be submitted via email to

14.1 Award description: This scholarship is sponsored by the American Medical Resource Institute

(AMRI). AMRI will sponsor a medical scholarship in a field that requires advanced life support skills. For

2019, they will be awarding a $1,000 scholarship to the person who submits the best essay. Pharm.D.

students are eligible to apply.

14.2 Scholarship Application Guidelines: Write an essay of no fewer than 2,000 words. The essay should

consist of two parts, as follows:

Part I: In the first part of the essay, please answer: “What unique contribution do you think you will make as

a healthcare professional?”

Part II: In the second part of the essay, please answer one of the following two questions:

1. What do you think would be the most difficult aspect of applying ACLS or PALS techniques to a

person in need?

2. Where will your ACLS or PALS skills take you? Write about where you are in your career goals now

and where you see yourself in 5, 10 and 15 years.
