Carefully refer to them often for answers to your basic questions. 1.0 General 1.1 The applicant must be Bermudian. 1.2 The applicant must have been educated in Bermuda for a minimum of five years. 2.0 Academic Requirements 2.1 The applicant must satisfy at least one of the following requirements: 2.1.1 Successful completion of the two-year Associate degree program at the Bermuda College; 2.1.2 Successful completion of the second year at an approved college or university (60 credit hours); 2.1.3 For Further Education Awards (FEA) and Interest Free Student Loan (IFSL) – Admission to a program of study at an approved institution abroad provided that an equivalent program of study is not offered at the Bermuda College; or 2.1.4 For Mature Student Award (MSA) – Successful completion of sixty (60) credit hours for admission to a program of study at an approved institution abroad provided that an equivalent program of study is not offered at the Bermuda College. 3.0 Required Documentation (documents must accompany completed application) 4.0 Submission of Financial Statement 4.1 Applicants under 25 years of age on 1 st September, 2013 who are single and living with a parent or parents are required to complete the Student’s Financial Statement and submit it to the Scholarships and Awards Committee along with their parents’/guardian’s Confidential Financial Statement. 4.2 Married applicants are required to provide the Student’s Financial Statement along with the Confidential Financial Statement of the spouse. 4.3 The Confidential Financial Statement should be sent in a separate envelope clearly marked Private and Confidential for the attention of the Scholarship & Awards Committee. Payment of Funding 4.4 If successful, the recipient must complete a New/Change Address Form indicating bank details, i.e. the beneficiary bank and bank account number where the funds are to be sent. All funds are paid in Bermuda dollars. The Ministry accepts no responsibility for funding not received due to incorrect information. IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THESE REGULATIONS. Carefully refer to them often for answers to your basic questions.

1.0 General

1.1 The applicant must be Bermudian.

1.2 The applicant must have been educated in Bermuda for a minimum of five years.

2.0 Academic Requirements

2.1 The applicant must satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

2.1.1 Successful completion of the two-year Associate degree program at the Bermuda College;

2.1.2 Successful completion of the second year at an approved college or university (60 credit hours);

2.1.3 For Further Education Awards (FEA) and Interest Free Student Loan (IFSL) – Admission to a program of study at an approved institution abroad provided that an equivalent program of study is not offered at the Bermuda College; or

2.1.4 For Mature Student Award (MSA) – Successful completion of sixty (60) credit hours for admission to a program of study at an approved institution abroad provided that an equivalent program of study is not offered at the Bermuda College.

3.0 Required Documentation (documents must accompany completed application)

4.0 Submission of Financial Statement

4.1 Applicants under 25 years of age on 1st

September, 2013 who are single and living with a parent or parents are required to complete the Student’s Financial Statement and submit it to the Scholarships and Awards Committee along with their parents’/guardian’s Confidential Financial Statement.

4.2 Married applicants are required to provide the Student’s Financial Statement along with the Confidential Financial Statement of the spouse.

4.3 The Confidential Financial Statement should be sent in a separate envelope clearly marked Private and

Confidential for the attention of the Scholarship & Awards Committee. Payment of Funding

4.4 If successful, the recipient must complete a New/Change Address Form indicating bank details, i.e. the beneficiary bank and bank account number where the funds are to be sent. All funds are paid in Bermuda dollars. The Ministry accepts no responsibility for funding not received due to incorrect information.

4.5 Payment will be made in one payment at the beginning of the applicant’s academic year conditional upon receipt of a certificate of full registration from the university/college where the recipient intends to study or is already enrolled.

4.6 All funding must be collected by 31

st March 2014 or the award granted will be forfeited.

5.0 Recipients of Teacher Training Awards

5.1 Teacher Training Awards:

(i) Value: $15,000 (ii) Tenure: 3 years (iii) Conditions: Program of Study must be a required subject identified by the Ministry of Education

Human Resource Department for which future staffing is required. (iv) Restriction: Recipient cannot accept a Further Education Award or Mature Student Award. (v) Short listed applicants for the Teacher Training Award may be interviewed between June and July.

5.2 The recipient of a Teacher Training Award is required to affect a bond signed by two guarantors, both of whom must be Bermudian, over the age of twenty-one and not over the age of seventy years and only one of whom may be a parent of the recipient.

5.3 Guarantors must satisfy the Ministry of Education that they possess adequate means to secure the Teacher

Training Award. Failure by the recipient to observe the conditions governing the Teacher Training Award will entail liability on the part of the two guarantors to repay the amount expended.

5.4 The guarantors must sign the bond at the Ministry of Education within twenty-one working days after their

names are submitted. Failure to do so may result in considerable delay in the receipt of the Teacher Training Award. The Teacher Training Award recipient must apprise the guarantors of their responsibilities.

6.0 Recipients of Interest Free Student Loans

6.1 Interest Free Student Loans:

(i) Value: Between $1,500 - $10,000 (ii) Tenure: 1 year (iii) Conditions: Award based on financial need

6.2 The Loan will be paid in full at the start of the applicant’s academic year, conditional upon receipt of

an official certificate of full registration together with a class schedule showing a minimum of 12 credit hours (undergraduate degree) or 9 credit hours (post graduate degree) attesting to the recipient’s registration for the fall semester at college or university and provided that all other requirements have been met.

6.3 The recipient of a loan is required to affect a bond signed by two guarantors, both of whom must be Bermudian, over the age of twenty-one and not over the age of seventy years and only one of whom may be a parent of the recipient.

8.0 Recipients of Mature Student Awards

(i) Value: $15,000 (ii) Tenure: 3 years (iii) Conditions: Applicant must be over 35 years of age on 1

st September of the year in which the award is

granted. Awarded based on financial need. (iv) Restriction: Recipient cannot accept a Further Education Award or Teacher Training Award.

9.0 Transcripts

9.1 The successful applicant is required to submit to the Scholarships and Awards Committee by 15th

January, 2014 (or as soon as it practicable thereafter) and by 1

st July 2014 (or as soon as is practicable thereafter) an up-to-

date academic transcript of work covered during the academic year to which the funding applies.

9.2 If for any reason the recipient is unable to register for classes for the first semester of this year, the award will be rescinded and the recipient must reapply during the following year.

11.0 Limitations

11.1 The Ministry of Education reserves the right in individual cases, and with prior consultation with the receiving facility, to alter the conditions governing the payment of the award. 11.2 The Ministry of Education reserves the right to cancel any award upon receipt of irrefutable proof that the academics and/or conduct of any holder is unsatisfactory. 11.3 The Ministry of Education reserves the right to request any document to support the parents’/guardian’s/student’s financial statement. In addition, the Ministry reserves the right to seek information from the parent’s/guardian’s/student’s employer or bank. 11.4 If the financial status of the successful applicant changes due to his or her acceptance of any other financial award/grant, then the Ministry of Education reserves the right to withdraw all or part of its funding.

12.0 Application Submission

12.1 It is the responsibility of all applicants/bearers of applications to obtain a slip acknowledging

receipt of the application. In the case of an application received by mail, an acknowledgement slip will be sent to the address provided on the application form.

12.2 All applicants will be notified by regular mail and/or email of the outcome of their applications by July 31

st.
