What is this project?

• Libraries are the center point in two Brazilian cities for connecting constituents to open government services, resources and data.

But what does that mean we are doing?

• Working in Belo Horizonte, MG and Porto Alegre, RS

• Building 3 apps• Creating a guide for librarians and library staff

to curate and catalog appropriate resources in a variety of ways (ie, in person events, online)

First, we held Generators.

• Two events in each city.• Generated three areas of opportunity• 10 distinct places where technology could be

helpful.

Next, we held design events.

• One, day and a half event, in each city.• Participants choose from the opportunities

identified at the generators.• They designed the app page for a finished app.

What else?

• We’ve been working with IPR, a great local partner.

• Pilar Pacheco, our program officers from Gates, attended the Belo Horizonte event.

• Ricky has presented at or attended three different library or Federal Ministry of Culture events.

What has been difficult?

• Holidays! • The changing cost due to currency

fluctuations.• Getting engaged with the municipal library

system in Belo Horizonte.• The problems and issues people have

gravitated to are, by and large, middle class issues.

What have we learned?

• Our process works, even translated into another language and another culture.

• (Thank goodness!)• With personal connection, people are willing to

follow the process.• Involvement of politicians at all levels has been

crucial.• People are enthusiastic participants in the

process.

So, what’s next?

• We need to turn the designs into posters, send to libraries to get feedback.

• Engage with Brazilian developers to make the apps.
