My dear friends in Christ,
When I was five or six years old, I went to visit the home of a
young man who was helping my family in farming. The problem with
my visit was that I went to a household that belongs to a lower caste,
and I even had supper with them. From then on my whole family was
always teasing me about having supped with someone below my social
rank. This may not make a specific sense to you. But if you lived in the
Indian social structure, you would immediately grasp the social signifi-
cance of such an event. Of course, the event I narrated happened in
1966. That is nearly fifty years ago. Things have changed a lot since
then. Every culture defines and determines who can associate with
whom and with whom one cannot interact or intermingle with socially.
It is all the more important when individuals decide who should be part
of their lives and who cannot be.
When the apostles of Jesus were in the upper room praying
together before receiving the Holy Spirit, their understanding of Jesus
was different. They knew this earthly Jesus in flesh and blood. They
walked with him, ate with him, did many other great thing with him. It
was certainly a first-hand knowledge of Jesus. However, their under-
standing of his words and his person was mostly partial or incomplete.
They could not comprehend the fuller meaning of his person, actions
and words. When they received the Holy Spirit, things changed dra-
matically. Jesus was not any more a third person to them. He became
part of every individual apostle’s life. Jesus became an inseparable part
of their very lives. The inner being of every disciple of Jesus was so
intertwined with that of Jesus that they could claim that it is not I who
lives, but Christ lives in me. I think that this could be the best result of
Christ’s resurrection and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
We as human persons never hesitate to allow certain habits to
take over our life. After a certain period we even become so addicted to
some habits that they become inseparable from our life. I do not want
to bring any moral judgment over human habits. However, we always
have a responsibility to judge how constructive or destructive certain
habits are in order to justify whether to allow them to be part of our
lives. Do certain habits become so important to us that we are even
ready to sacrifice certain obligations that we owe to our Holy God in
order to go on paying tributes to our own habits? I am sure that you can
relate to what I am talking about. Have we ever thought about keeping
Christ, who is all good and nothing but fullness of every goodness, as
an inseparable part of our being? If that could happen in our life, we
could be the most productive people to our family, to our Church and to
the wider society.
Your brother in Christ,
Fr. Xavier Ilango
