    Poaching Situations

There are two situations inwhich poaching poses amajor problem.

The 1st situation is when apiece of land is just comingunder protection and havelow deer populations andpoachers keep them low.

    The 2nd situation involves a

management programwhich is aimed at producinglarge numbers of trophyclass deer. This forms anew breed of poacher

    called a trophy poacher.

Poaching Methods The average poacher really is a lazy person,

they prefer to kill deer from a road.

    1) One way is to travel back-roads until adeer crosses, then the poacher shoots it orstalks it on the land they are on.

    2) The second method involves the use of a

spotlight. This is pretty basic hunting. Theyshine the light at the deer, of course it willlook back, then the deer is blinded by thelight and makes it easy to bust em.

Other violationswere documented in La Salle, McMullen and Duvalcounties. The undercover sting, called Operation Venado Macho, was initiated over a year ago in a cooperative effortbetween the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPW)law enforcement division and private landowners, whoseintensively managed ranches have been prime targetsfor serious trophy deer poachers.
