SES Holds PAC Meeting

On July 27, 2015, SES scheduled a Parent Advisory Council Meeting. The team discussed upcoming parental involvement activities, budget, and some student data for this school year. Parents and staff were in attendance. This gives parents a voice in decision-making. We planned the annual Title I meeting/dinner for October 1st. This will be in informational meeting. We will provide WatchDog information, information about the new report card, as well as, Title I activities. We will provide pizza that evening, and parents will rotate to attend the informational sessions offered. We hope that you will be there!!

Welcome back to school!

We have a lot of new and exciting things happening in the classroom for our students. This year our county adopted a new reading series that will support the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. We are excited for the new stories and all the online components that can be used in the classroom. This year kindergarten through fourth grade will also take a universal reading and math assessment known as STAR360. This assessment will be administered on the computer and is about 20-30 minutes in length for each subject area. The data from the assessment will provide teachers with immediate feedback on the strengths and needs of the students in their class. We are looking forward to a great year with all of these new resources!

Mrs. McNeil

SES Eagle Squad tryouts will take place in the gym on Thursday, September 24, 2:45 - 3:45 pmfor third and fourth graders. Letters explaining this program will be sent home with students on September 9.

The first grade students at Sudlersville Elementary School are eager to see their classroom after arrival on the first day of school, August 31st. Students arrived with smiling faces and looked forward to meeting their classmates and new teacher for this school year. It will be a good year!

Open Computer Lab on Back to School Night, September 10th I look forward to seeing all our new and returning families on Thursday, September 10th for our annual Back-to-School Night! For all our families who do not have access to the internet at home; our computer lab will be open at 5:00pm on Back-to-School Night. This is a great opportunity to complete your annual emergency form, which will now be completed online using Queen Anne’s County’s new InfoSnap program. All families should have already received a personal email inviting you to log in to InfoSnap to complete your child’s “returning student registration” – which takes the place of the emergency form and the calendar handbook policy forms that would be sent home at the beginning of each new school year. Don’t have an email address? This will be an opportunity to create one! Staff members will be available to assist you with this process.

Math Memo

Welcome back to another fantastic year at SES! Hopefully you included some form of math in your summer activities and are ready for this year. If your student participated in the online Tenmarks program, send any certificates to your child’s teacher by September 9th . (They will be returned.) At some point in the next few weeks, we will have an ice cream social for those who show they participated.

Welcome back to school! We, at SES, are excited for new school year full of reading, learning and most of all, fun! We have many new programs this year. Queen Anne’s County Public School has adopted a new reading series, Mc Graw Hill’s Reading Wonders. This program offers highly motivating texts, engaging activities and a quality technology component that is aligned with the Maryland College and Career Ready standards. The students will have an opportunity to access the McGraw Hill books, games and materials online at home. More information will be sent home in the beginning of the year. We will also be starting to use STAR 360 as a universal screener throughout the County. It is an assessment that will be given to all elementary students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Kindergarten students will be taking the Early Literacy assessment starting in the middle of the year. First graders through fifth graders will be taking the Reading and Math assessments three times a year. Importantly, each assessment is on-line and takes only twenty to thirty minutes. The STAR 360 data will help teachers to design lessons to reinforce and extend our students’ learning.

Reading

Lastly, our summer reading incentive is coming to an end. We have challenged all students to read for 2 steps or 30 minutes each weekday for a total of 100 steps. There is still a little bit of time to reach the reading goal. Each participant must turn in their completed reading log by Friday, September 11. If your child needs another reading log, please contact your child’s teacher. Students who successfully complete 50 steps will participate in an ice cream social and earn eagle bucks. Students who complete all 100 steps will receive an additional reward. I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer full of reading fun! We are so excited to be soaring into another fantastic and fun year at SES!

Thoughts for the month:Five out of four people have trouble with fractions.A bicycle can’t stand alone because it is two-tired.A hungry clock goes back four seconds.A calendar’s days are numbered.

Smile and be happy! Until next time..:)

HEALTHROOM NEWS

Any medication brought to school must be in the original container for nonprescription, or the pharmacist bottle for prescription medication. These medications must also be accompanied by a “Physician Medication Form”. Some doctor’s offices have copies of these forms, or you may ask the nurse in the health room for this form at any time. A responsible adult must bring in the medicine. This is a policy of the School Board and the Health Department.

Parents please place a change of clothes (T-shirt, shorts, underwear & socks) in your child’s back pack. These will really come in handy if for some reason your child has accidentally messed their pants, vomits, or gets wet. We do not have a supply of clothes in the health room, so an extra set tucked in the bottom of the backpack can really save the day.

Please be sure to keep current phone numbers on file, in the event of emergency. It is also important to have a “back-up” plan for students to be picked up due to illness or injury. The health room is active, and it does not have availability to keep students for the day, nor should a sick child be sent home on the bus.

Head lice happens. Make it a habit this new school year to check your child’s hair at least 2 times a week for signs of head lice. This preventive tip is so worth the effort.

*Attention Parents*According to Maryland School Immunization Regulations, to be allowed in school, students must be immunized according to the Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene vaccine requirements for children enrolled in Maryland schools. All students entering Kindergarten must show proof of two measles and two varicella vaccinations. All students entering 7th grade must show proof of one Tdap and one meningitis vaccination. All new or transferring students must provide a copy of their immunization record before attending school.Take Note:

Students must provide a copy of their immunization record showing compliance by the first day of school. ORStudents must provide a copy of their immunization record by the first day of school with a copy of their scheduled appointment card/fax from the doctor of the appointment. The appointment must be within the first 20 calendar days from the start of school.Students who come to school without their compliant immunization record or without their immunization record and scheduled appointment card within the first 20 calendar days will be pulled out of class and sent home until we receive proper documentation.

** Parents, there will be an immunization clinic on Tuesdays 9/1, 9/8, and 9/15 at the Queen Anne’s County Health Department in Centreville for these new vaccine requirements from 3:30pm to 7pm free of charge. No appointment is necessary.

Thank you for your support.

We are proud to announce Angie Soto’s shift to her new position as Judy Center In-Home Interventionist/Home Visitor.  She will be available to provide homework help home visits to parents and children at the request of the child’s Pre-K or Kindergarten classroom teacher.  She will also provide outreach educational opportunities utilizing Frogstreet Bilingual curriculum to parents of children (birth - 4) residing in the Sudlersville area.  The Judy Center’s outreach efforts are beneficial in helping parents prepare their children for school success.

Please help us in welcoming new Judy Center staff member, Dawn Meyers, who will be a part-time Administrative Assistant, Salisbury University Bachelor of Social Work intern, Kendall Savage, and Andrea Daniels, Judy Center volunteer.
