Pastor Cindy

A wonderful tradition has emerged for our congregation over the past several years. We call it, “Sing Out the Summer!” Two Sundays ago we shared some of our old favorite hymns and a few of our new ones too! Thanks to everyone who submitted their requests and to our youth who helped lead us in some camp favorites.

A recent news article in the Christian Century lifts up in a humorous fashion a contest to determine the best hymn of all time. Unfortunately, we didn’t sing either of the two finalists as we “sang out the summer.” Guess we’ll have to wait for another time!

Champion Hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy!” emerged from a March Madness-style tournament as “the greatest hymn of all time.” More than 800 people, mostly from the 1,200-member Hymn Society, voted during the competition, which featured brackets similar to those created for the NCAA basketball tournament. “Holy, Holy, Holy!” trounced “Amazing Grace,” 70 to 30 percent, in the second round (Religious News Service, July 19).

Dr. Don Saliers, retired professor of worship at Emory University, describes the power of singing in a larger and more profound context: “Perhaps singing is humankind’s most vital and most widely shared spiritual act, because it awakens in us a shared solidarity and resonance with the transcendent. God calls us back to life through music. Music is the language of the soul made audible.”

As our choirs resume their ministry with us this fall, may we celebrate that God is calling us back to our life together. You are welcome to join us in song and praise!

Pastor Jeff

Habitat partner families are taking their first steps

toward becoming self-sufficient because of

your generous donation of $453.25. Per your request , your gift will be

designated for the Northwest Adopt-a-House. Thank You!

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be

given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together

and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will

be measured to you.

Jesus has just described how we are to treat others. We are to forgive and give generously.

He illustrates the point with the everyday example of measuring out grain for purchase. The seller would take a measuring container and pour the grain in it. After getting it about three-quarters full, he would shake it to level

out the grain so more could be put in. The goal was to get as much in the measure as possible. In the same way God promises to give grace

abundantly to those who are gracious.

We are beginning our church program year, and we will have the opportunity to give of our time, effort, money, and spirit in service to God as part of the ministry of our church. Let us be in prayer

about what God wants us to do.

On September 8th, Kickoff Sunday, you will have the opportunity to volunteer for several of our Outreach programs – Building the Habitat for Humanity house, working at or donating to the NNEMAP food pantry, providing and/or

delivering food to the Y center meals, signing up or sponsoring a participant for the Crop Walk, or

volunteering at or learning about our new relationship with Riverview International Center.

On September 29th, Bruce Barkhauer with Gener-osity Plus will share some financial stewardship

ideas with us as we look forward to our Covenant process in October.

Thanks to phenomenal support of the

NWCC family, our “Flip” did not

“Flop!” More than 64 people

volunteered and more than 355 hours

of volunteering were logged. We

appreciate the many donations,

including the baked goods and car

washing that netted the church OVER

$6,600 in profit. This will support

the many ministries that NWCC

undergirds. We take pride in this

work that allows customers to find

low-cost items while you practiced

stewardship of the earth. Just think of

the items you kept out of the landfill!

The fellowship created in this project

was a delight to witness. Thank you!
