MMML:Artist Of

The Month: SHill

Chocolate: When did you first know you wanted to pursue music as your career? SHILL: For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to pursue music. I’ve been in music classes at least since the 5th grade and have maintained that focus till this day.

Chocolate: How does it feel to be #1 on the reverbnation classical charts?SHILL: I feel humble, I went all the way from #96 to #1 on the reverbnation classical charts. It just feels great to be heard.

Chocolate: How did you come up with the name SHILL?SHILL: . I abbreviated my first name (Sherod) since every-one calls me S and my last name is Hill and i want to keep a strong family name relevant, therefore I am S.Hill.

Chocolate: Where do you see your career headed in the future?SHILL: My future hopefully will consist of Broadway, Op-era’s and Rythym & Blues shows.

Chocolate: Do You feel the new R&B still tells a story to others?SHILL: True R&B to me isn’t staged, its a chill that runs down your spine positively or negatively that just makes you belt your emotion from within. I feel like new R&B doesn’t tell the story deep enough.

Chocolate: Did that first solo mix debut who u really are and feel about music?SHILL: The Essence of Veritas was a respectful amateur project in my opinion. My lyrics were from the heart and described my feelings about life.

Chocolate: When is your next mixtape going to drop?

SHILL: My next Mix tape Life’s Obsession drops Summer-time 2013 Date TBA.

Chocolate: Tell everyone who inspire you today?SHILL: I’m inspired by many but to name a few Lachanze Forjour (Broadway Actress), Rahiem (Furious Five), Char-lie Wilson (Gap Band) and the person i sing for Elijah Hill ( My Son)

Encouraged by his brother “R.I.P JASON E. JEFFRIES” to explore music as an outlet of a troubled youth DJ Popeye began his close association with Hip Hop in beat boxing initially for fun while at school, and he always played the drums but never forgot his DJing passion as it was also his duty to provide music for his crew although he didn’t have the appropriate DJ Tools he further developed his DJ skill’s also by purchasing a Gemini table and used his first apartments closet for practice area! (BIG THANKS TO HIS WIFE/BEST FRIEND). It wasn’t until ‘99 that DJ Popeye took a much more dedicated role in his DJing. DJ Popeye has incredible ability to steal a show with his creative, technical and smooth scratching. He has been inspired by his wife and two children, as well as artists and fellow DJ’s alike! However, he is also known for his club savvy and ability to get a room moving with a connection to the dance floor. He always looks to learn more of the staple moves and has never been afraid to push the level to create daring hip hop sets that sound so perfectly natural you wonder why nobody ever thought of playing it that way before. Since the late-’90s,

DJ Popeye has produced a seemingly endless series of party-friendly mix-tapes because he loves music so much he always finds away to be privy to some of the hottest and most exclusive tracks in the game. DJ Popeye has worked with many artists, such as RIKK REIGHN, FLIP TOWN RECORDS, DA HIT SQUAD, TWISTA, MOOK DA STAR, RAIN-DROP, GEL from UGK records, TAJ (Mr. Mansfield) Torrence, Rico Relz, KEV LAR, THE COMMISION, YO BOI PHATS, DIGMATA, EMD ENT., Ourglaz Records, Pipeline Records, Higher Level Ent. and many other. Band Spotl i g h tNew Retro is a funk/hip-hop band from College Park,MD, performing live in the greater Washington DC area. The core membership of NR. (lead vocalist Che Adams, percussionist Jason Stewart, and bassist Enoch Rowe) have been perform-ing together since assembling at the University of Maryland in 2005. The introduction of hip-hop came with the induc-tion of lyricist Chris “I Go By the General” Henri (2010) and producer/lyricist Sam “Samu-L” Chafin (2011), creating a new sound that the band has termed DC Funk. Newest among the group is guitarist Thom Morey, who has enriched the group’s sound through his punch groove style of play. In addition to performing locally at bars and lounges such as Stoney’s, 1920 Lounge, and Solly’s Tavern, New Retro has also participated in local arts events such as Charm City Fringe Festival, STPP Music Festival, and DC Beer Week.

Band Spotlights on

“New Retro”CB: When did you first know you wanted to pursue music as your career?Retro: From the beginning; Essentially, we all come form different musical balckgrounds. We have all been playing music throughout our lives in various projects and have taken the experiences we’ve gained individually, to put them to collective use as The New Retro.

CB: Do you ever wish you can return to the day when artist will perform with live bands?Retro: We feel that live bands have been and always should be producing their own organ-ic sound; and that sound is the basis of music.

CB: How did you come up with the name New Retro?Retro: When we formed in 2007, vocalist Che Adams, percus-sionist Jason Stewart, and bassist Enoch Rowe were forming a band with keyboard and guitarist. We had all been performing with an on-campus collective of musicians at the University of Maryland College Park, but wanted more input to the creative and administrative processes of the group. When we sat down to think of a band name, we had some trouble focusing on a concept or theme. We broke it down to “what does the group sound like”, to which Jason responded “it sounds like ‘New’ but retro...we should be New Retro”.

CB: Where do you see your career headed in the future?Retro: We have aspirations in music, radio/TV/film, and fash-ion. We are currently recording and mixing our debut mixtape, which will take DC Funk from bars and lounges around the DMV and out into the world. This project is a joint-production effort between our own Jason Stewart and Samu-L Chafin, with Julio Yanes (intern at WLVS, audio engineering student at Arts Institute). Over the course of playing dozens of local bars and restaurants, we have also had success selling our signature “New Retro” t-shirts (courtesy of RedTable Press). This has brought us to the conclusion that we need different t-shirts, polos, sweaters, hats, and everything that the modern “New Retro” consumer could want or need..

CB: How did you feel about the shortage of the bands that perform now?

Retro:We see the shortage of bands that perform as an abundance of opportunity for the group. For instance, we were the only “band” on the DMV2SXSW mixtape, a compilation of artists promoted at the SxSW music and art festival in Austin Texas by Brave New Breed En-tertainment. In similar fashion we have collaborated with sever-al artists over the years, allowing our music to be exposed to new fans. Creating these new relationships has challenged us as musicians, making us better individually and as a group. It has also been crucial to the development of our sound, our market-ing, and the “New Retro” brand as a product.

CB:What do the band have in plan for the future?Retro: Our immediate plans are to release our mixtape this summer and play several shows in Baltimore and DC in pro-motion of the release. We are also rehearsing with different hip hop and R&B artists, and look forward to making guest appear-ances on upcoming mixtapes and performances.

CB: When is your next performance?Retro: We have performances Saturday 4/20 at the Velvet Lounge with All the Best Kids, G-Two, and The Delegation, Thursday 5/9 at Stoney’s Restaurant and Bar, Saturday 5/18 at the Downtown Silver Spring outdoor stage.

CB:.Tell everyone who inspire you today?Retro: We are inspired by the countless friends and fans who have provided support, DJ Clap-pa and DJ Boom from WLVS Radio for providing local online radio opportunities; by Stoney’s Restaurant and Bar, 1920 Lounge, and Solly’s U Street Tavern for providing a home for DC Funk; by Rike Akande and Nicole Charles, who provide incredible live show photography whenever they are in attendance; by all of the past members, whose sacrifices have paved the way for our current and future successes; and by the roommates, girlfriends, and relatives who have listened to hours upon hours of rehearsals and perfor-mances, sharing in our growth as individuals and as a unit.

Ghost tells

ChocolateCB: Growing up with the influences of old school hip hop whats your thoughts on the new hip hop now?Ghost: HIP HOP IS HIP HOP PE-RIOD. Regardless of the difference in sound & styles you know it when you hear it & you instantly identify it as such. Like everything else in life Hip Hop also evolves & morphs into a different being over time. Especially a whole generation later, subsequent to some of the greatest emcees that groomed me.

CB Do you write most of your lyrics abut life?Ghost: All day long. You can only speak on the things that you know. And actually elaborate on them in intricate details that only 1st hand knowledge & experience can give. Dont get me wrong, people can talk about things they’ve never took part in or had because imagination is powerful. However, when speaking on things from this aspect it can be so obviously suspect that people can & eventually will poke holes through it

CB: How did you get the title for your first album?Ghost: My sentence in The Federal Bureau Of Prisons. The title is so strong & significant to me due the the impact it had on me & my entire family. My two older siblings whom I LOVE dearly were also on my case & are still incarcerated. None of us cooperated. Instead all 3 of us went to trial together, lost together, & got our heads cracked TOGETHER! The outcome was both of them being sen-tenced to LIFE & me to 235 Months.

CB: Being a part of Verbally Diseased Records with Co Still how was the experience?Ghost: A whole lot of good spiked with its bad experiences as well in light of Verbally Diseased. Me & Co- Still have always been 100 though. Thats my man & he always focused on doing his own thing regardless of what was going on with the whole. I salute that. I was glad to see that he stayed RELEVANT & grew while I was gone.

CB: Who are some of the producers on your many albums?Ghost: I’ve always worked with my main man SLICE, the great K-TONE(TRAXSTERS old rap partner & Friend)R.I.P., One of my best friends in the world SIRE SEN-SAI(produced my classic INHERIT THE EARTH)R.I.P., MALIK AL-LAH( Chicago Outfitters)

CB: Being gone from music for so long is your audience the same?Ghost: The same but growing every-day with people from all different age groups & ethnicities. And it’s Beau-tiful. Overseas is starting to bubble something lovely too.

CB: Who are some of the producers u been working with since you been back?Ghost: My man FADE came all the way from Arkansas & just laced me

up like a new pair of 1’s. Made it rain hot shit. My true homie PHILOSO-PHY snapped like always with DO IT BIG, RABIEZ blew the door of the hinges with the Intro “True Feelings” & MEANWHILE killed RELEVANT.

CB: Do you have an albnim that tells your story?Ghost: My Album definitely chroni-cles my life & it’s experiences.

CB: Do you feel you have change your style of music with the time?Ghost: I’ve always been able to adapt to Whatever. So I play with styles & sounds for the sake of staying current & never becoming pigeon holed to 1 thing. So yes,but I never lose sight of the essence. I come from the Boom Bap era, the Golden era.

CB: Your Future events?Ghost: I just landed a slot on “DOPEMIX 11” a KENDRICK LAMAR mixtape hosted by Murda Mamis very own DJ LAZY K. My joint “GET YA CHIPS”. I have a per-formance on the 1st of May in front of ROCK NATIONS A & R Omar Grant & an interview lined up after my performance.

are as timeless and energized as the lyrics laced over them. S.O.N. has proven himself as a mainstay and a formidable talent in the Hip-Hop industry. His lyricism, soul-lifting and gimmick-free deliv-ery, along with his universal sound is impressive, distinctive and validates him as a respected artist. Reviews of S.O.N.’s work express admiration and appreciation: IMRADIO, Baltimore’s Very Own, Sir Preiss, #TUNE_LOVE, imatellmuva, KENO beats, Praverb.net, Kevin Nottingham and Tru Dat.. S.O.N. shares: “I am Co-Founder of the UNIFIED NATIONS of HIP HOP which is a roster of Emcees, Vocalists, Producers and DJ’s from the U.S., Cana-da, Germany, England, Latvia, Sweden, Japan and France. Our goal is to create music on an interna-tional level that’s representative of the diversity of the Hip Hop culture. I am more concerned with making real music and creating my own brand than I am with being signed to a record label. Salute to all my people keeping Hip-Hop alive around the world. Quality is never an accident; it is the combination of good intentions, exceptional effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; all of which S.O.N. consistently, achieves and delivers in his music. S.O.N., which stands for, Shining Over Negativ-ity, is an extraordinary talent with an impressive catalogue. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, S.O.N., born Tavon Dyer began rapping at the age of 17. Growing up in Baltimore was difficult for S.O.N.; he experienced many obstacles and had few role models. His father was a drug addict and was absent for most of his upbringing. S.O.N.’s mother; an Evangelist, tried her best to keep the family to-gether, but faced challenges taking care of him and his brothers on her own. S.O.N. knew what it was like to be without running water, electricity, heat, and the looming threat of eviction over and again. Although S.O.N. experienced many hardships, he rose from it, and would find refuge in music. With fortitude, S.O.N. would press on, and develop his lyrical style. Over the years, S.O.N. would receive praise and recognition for his lyricism; he is re-markable and dynamic at constructing and deliv-ering lyrics that flourish with a gritty and realistic content. S.O.N. has collaborated with producers from around the world, whose beats

Page 18: Unsigned Vol I/ Issue IV

Shining Over Negavity

with Chocolate

CB: Son please share why drop the Baltimore in your name?S.O.N: was originally Baltimore S.O.N. but I dropped the Baltimore from my name to distinguish my-self from a number of other artists from Baltimore with a similar name. Also S.O.N. stands for Shining Over Negativity so I felt that was the most important part of the name. I am an aspiring Model, Fashion Designer, Videographer as well as an Emcee so S.O.N. works best branding wise.

CB: Did your childhood setbacks play a part of why you venture into music?S.O.N:Most definitely. I have always been into the arts, acting and poetry from an early age, and I have always loved music. So as I got older I began putting my thoughts and feelings on paper and started rapping over beats. I felt that music was a valuable outlet that I was able to use to deal with real life issues. Music is definitely thera-peutic.

CB Did you recieve more appreciation in Japan during the release of the 2nd

project?S.O.N: I actually released 2 full length albums during my 3 years of living in Tokyo. I definitely did get a better reception from over there than I did back at home. I wouldn’t attribute that to anything other than the fact that I had been living abroad between Lon-don and Tokyo for 9 years so the

majority of my fan base was interna-tional.

CB: Your album “Bmore2France” do it have a specfic meaning?S.O.N: The BMORE 2 FRANCE Project was pretty much what the title suggest. It was out together by myself along with fellow Baltimore Emcees, Don Streat and Lord Baltimore DDS, and was produced by Keno Beats from Orleans, France.

CB: Which album tells your story?S.O.N: Pretty much every song that you hear me on tells my story. As far as a complete body of work though, I would have to say that my HisStory (The Audiobiography of Baltimore S.O.N.) would be the project that best tells my story. I touch on a lot of subjects on that album, from my upbringing, growing up on the streets of Baltimore, to finding out about my daughter when she was 12, to living overseas and my father’s past drug addiction.

CB: Do you have a fav Collaboration?S.O.N: LOL, to be quite honest I don’t have just one favorite. My Man DJ SoulClap from Germany is a monster, he produces for Hip Hop Icons and his tracks represent that Official Boom Bap, I always like getting joints from Clap. Another one of my favorites is My Man DJ Qvali from Sweden, that boy is sick. His beats are crazy and his cuts on the turntable are wicked. My Man Keno “Beast” Beats from France is so official.

CB: The development of Unified Na-tions Of Hip Hop?

S.O.N: The Unified Nation of Hip Hop is something that myself and German Producer Kallsen created. We basically used it as a platform to link Individuals in the Hip Hop Culture from around the world. We were able to allow collaborations to happen to other artists that ordinarily wouldn’t have had the opportunity to network

with people from different countries.

CB: Do you have an opinon on today Hip Hop?S.O.N: When it comes to Hip Hop I am very opinionated. I always here people say that Hip Hop is Dead and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Hip Hop has NEVER been dead because you will always have Emcees like myself and a host of others that will keep the Culture alive. We may not be seen on the grand scale but we are definitely out here and we are do-ing it for the sake of the culture. What happened was the money machines behind rap started calling rap Hip Hop so now the overall perception of what True Hip Hop is has been very much so skewed. Let me make this clear, RAP IS NOT HIP HOP. Rap is just that, rap, anyone can rap, Hip Hop is a way of life.

He was initially influenced by NWA. “They were the first rap group I had heard. Once I was introduced to rap, I ran with it.” Artists like Rakim, KRS-1, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Wu-tang Clan, just to name a few really inspired Spq to explore the hip-hop game. Spq being infatuated with the art, it has now allowed him to be creative with words that make sense to “SPQ” his point across. He felt that he wanted to make music that everybody can feel. Spq was a member of a group called Crown Point. Spq and his group at the time eventually got involved with a local label. They performed at showcases and competitions throughout the chicago land area. Things didn’t work out though, at least not the way Spq Legend had hoped with the label and

the group. So eventually everybody went their separate ways as some groups do. However, he has used the knowledge and wisdom from those experiences to fill his endeavor with his current label SSMG. However, he was used the knowledge and wis-dom form those experiences to fill his endeavor with his current label SSMG (Sound Scandal Music Group) In the early years of Sound Scandal Entertainment (which is now called SSMG) Spq released his first album called “Cold World” in 2005. It was produced by chicago’s hottest Riot One (CEO/Producer of SSMG). The album did very well on the streets. Spq name was circulating throughout the chi. But after that Spq had a few hurdles in his life he had to conquer before moving forward with his ca-reer. Now since his first album

SPQ Legend is currently working continuously and hard on making albums to come after a difficult setback. He reunited with a more stronger label SSMG that has grew treatment during his absence SPQ Legend resigned to SSMG. Which he is considered to be one of the most prolific song writers along with one of the greatest rosters SSMG put together. Working on his new album titled . “Str8 To The Money” and other future projects the stage is set once again for Spq Legend. Only this time no set-backs. - SPQ LEGEND

feels like home. People love to listen to me, because I make simple music that everyone can relate to. So they welcomeand love my music, everywhere I have been to. CB How was the experience of collaborating with London based artists? OS It’s an experience to cherish, London artist are very cool to work with - I really enjoyed it. I won’t stop collaborating with different artist worldwide during my musical career. More cre-ative minds always work better.CB Was recording your single “Roll it Shake It” the highlight of your career?OS Well “Roll It Shake It” is one of the very big tunes I have. I’ve made lots of songs and it seems to always get better when I release a new song. “Roll It Shake It” makes people want to dance and it’s a song I wrote for the ladies to dance to, so it’s warmly accepted and (it made) people start taking me more seriously as a artist after I re-leased the Rap/Dancehall single. “Gba Mi Lago” (Spliff Version) came before “Roll It Shake It” and “Walahi” (I Swear) was released after(wards) and I rapped and sang to nice different african rhythms on the 3 different commercial hip-hop songs.CB What American producers would you like to work with?OS I’ll like to work with a lot of American pro-ducers that I’m a fan of, but to mention a few, Pharell, Kanye West, Timbaland, Swiss Beats, Jay-Z, Dr Dre, Quincy Jones, P.Diddy...CB Do you have a major project coming up?OS Yes, my major project is my promotional album “The Black Royalty, Olushegs Olumide Volume 1.” An album of 21 hot songs I, its an album of over an hour of non-stop play of my recordings. Do you have advice to give artist that are coming up behind you, about the industry?CB What what advice would you give young coming up in this industry?OS Yes, I will love to encourage everybody coming up (and) trying to make music but make sure you’ve perfected your acts, whilst you were underground before putting your of music out there. I believe the spotlight will hit you anytime and its the amount of talent in you and work you’ve put into your music that will sustain you in the game. The industry is just a combination of real music lovers, that are expecting to hear some-thing good from you always. My people, above all, believe in yourself. You can also do it, like I do, if you have the talent.

CB How is the music industry in Nigeria? OS The music industry in Nigeria is thriving and will even get better with time. There’s high posi-tive energy to create good music and endurance to hustle for their music to be heard worldwide amongst young people here. The youths here, just like almost everywhere I’ve been to across the world, love being inspired to do something positive and new. Also the success stories of Artists/Entrepreneurs from America like Jay-Z, Birdman, 50 CENT and many more, may have really inspired the Afri-cans and Nigeria in general.CB You have many music skills which title do you love the most?OS Yea, lol, I’m very versatile when making my music, but I think it would be cool to describe me as a Rap-Singer, because that’s what I do. I try to rap and sing to any nice beat I hear.CB Do you experience the same type of love when you go back and forth from London and Nigeria with your music? OS Yes I think it balances out well, because whether I’m in the UK or NIGERIA, it always

Kred born Kendrick Evans is a Saint louis native born in the North County side of town. Berkeley to be exact. K red started perfecting his craft in the cafateria of his high school, Cardinal Ritter, where he and just a small handful of other students who felt they had the skills to pay the bills, used to make beats using their hands, mouths, and pen-cils and spit rhymes that they had written, in one of their not so desireable classes before lunch time. After high school K red got even deeper into his persuit of being a world re-nouned spitter and recorded his first few songs with some friends from the neighborhood he grew up in. Shortly after that K red formed his own independent record label(one of the first in STL) " Camp Thorobred Records". He signed a number of local artist to the label like Killa Kon,Warrat, Perv, Cj,Freeze and a few more. He also put on for a num-ber of other ST LOUIS artist by dropping 2 phenominal city wide compelations, Bredwinners 1&2 which featured artist like Rukka Puff, Chase and also debuted the platinum selling artist "Baby Huey"!! While touring with Camp Tho-robred a member of the notorious BMF got a hold of some of K red's prolific D boy music and was immediately and thouroughly impressed.

He set up a meeting with K red and manager Jesse(J howes) howes and explained to them how he could get a deal for K red with Suave House Records(8ball & MJG’s former label). The CEO of this label was Tony Dreper. Eventually the BMF member(name can not be disclosed) arranged a meeting for K red and T Dreper in Huston where k red was offered $40,000 for a two album, non exclusive, record deal. Under normal circumstances the deal might have sounded alright, however there were a few things that didnt sit right with Redy. For one the amount of money just didnt seem like enough for a guy that had seen $40,000, 40 times prior to them making the offer and secondly the label wanted him to start a rap beef withNEW YORK RAPPER 50 cent and STL icon NELLY. They stated that NELLY had showed no love to the LOU after being the hottest artist in the industry for some years and making a ton of money. They felt he needed to be ex-posed and that Kred should be the on to do it. Needless to say Redy didnt agree and the deal never went down. As of now Kred has just been crushing the underground scene with mixtape after mixtape such as B.N.P.(business never personal) vol. 1&2 which he released on his new label “REDY ROCK ENT” and is set to release his most recent project “ Big 8’s” in the summer of 2013

EssenceRayne: When did you first know you wanted to pursue music as your career?Kred: I recorded my first sing when i was 17 and after I heard how good I sounded on wax it was on from there.

EssenceRayne: Do you ever wish you can return to the high school days and still have fun making music?Kred: High school was fun and freestyling with my friends was great but I don’t necessarily wanna go back.

EssenceRayne: How did Kred come about?Kred: My friend Huggie gave me that name. I guess its cuz I’m a red nigga named Kendrick!! Lol and by the way my name is Kendrick Lamont.

EssenceRayne:You see your career headed?Kred: my career is in my hands. The way the industry is set up now you don’t need a major label backing you to make money. So I’ll get out whatever I put in. Independent is the way to go.

EssenceRayne: How did you feel when the record label wanted you to start a hip hop beef?Kred: I felt the beef was unnecessary. My music is good enough not to have to use a beef gimmick. Be-sides, the money they were offering wasn’t enough to go to war with 50 and Nelly.

EssenceRayne: When is your next mix tape drop?Kred:Big 8’s is dropping summer of 2013.

EssenceRayne: Tell everyone who inspire you today?Kred: My biggest inspiration would have to be my brother Trevor (rip) his son my nephew, Frostwood Fury (an up and coming artist on Redy Rock ent) from Delaware and Pimp C of UgK(rip). He’s the realist to ever do it in my eyes.
