FIRE SUPPRESSION PIPING SPECIFICATIONS

1. PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1

Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 DEFINITIONS

A. Working Plans: Documents, including drawings, calculations, and material specifications prepared according to

NFPA 13 for obtaining approval from authorities having jurisdiction.

1.3 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Design sprinklers and obtain approval from authorities having jurisdiction. System shall be per Georgia State Fire

Commissioner Chapter 120-3-3 latest edition, 2012 International Fire Code w/ GA amendments, 2010 NFPA 13 & 14

compliant.

B. Design sprinkler piping according to the following and obtain approval from authorities having jurisdiction:

1.) Margin of Safety for Available Water Flow and Pressure: 10 percent, including losses through water-service

piping, valves, and backflow preventers.

C. Standard Piping System Component Working Pressure: Listed for at least 175 psig.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For the following:

1.) Piping materials, including dielectric fittings, flexible connections, and sprinkler specialty fittings.

2.) Pipe hangers and supports, including seismic restraints.

3.) Sprinklers, escutcheons, and guards. Include sprinkler flow characteristics, mounting, finish, and other

pertinent data.

B. Approved Sprinkler Piping Shop Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, that have been

approved by authorities having jurisdiction, including hydraulic calculations for renovated area.

C. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance

requirements and as described in NFPA 13. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground

Piping" and "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Underground Piping."

D. Field quality-control test reports.

E. Operation and Maintenance Data: For standpipe and sprinkler specialties to include in emergency, operation, and

maintenance manuals.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Designer & Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer (NICET LEVEL III or higher) who has designed and

installed fire-suppression piping similar to that indicated for this Project and obtained design approval and

inspection approval from authorities having jurisdiction and engineer of record.

B. Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms whose equipment, specialties, and accessories are listed by product name and

manufacturer in UL's "Fire Protection Equipment Directory" and FM's "Fire Protection Approval Guide" and that

comply with other requirements indicated.

C. Sprinkler Components: Listing/approval stamp, label, or other marking by a testing agency acceptable to

authorities having jurisdiction.

D. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, Article 100, by a testing

agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

E. NFPA Standards: Equipment, specialties, accessories, installation, and testing complying with the following:

1.) NFPA 13, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems."

1.6 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate layout and installation of sprinklers with other construction trades. Coordinate systems components

that penetrate ceilings with & including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, and partition assemblies.

2. PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 PIPING MATERIALS

A. Refer to Part 3 "Piping Applications" Article for applications of pipe, tube, fitting, and joining materials.

2.2 PIPES AND TUBES

A. Standard-Weight Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53, ASTM A 135, or ASTM A 795; Schedule 40 in NPS 6 and smaller, and

Schedule 30 in NPS 8 and larger.

B. Schedule 30 Steel Pipe: ASTM A 135 or ASTM A 795, with wall thickness less than Schedule 40 and equal to or

greater than Schedule 30 or ASTM A 795 and ASME B36.10M, Schedule 30 wrought-steel pipe.

C. Thinwall, Threadable Steel Pipe: ASTM A 135 or ASTM A 795, with wall thickness less than Schedule 40 and greater

than Schedule 10.

D. Grooved-End, Schedule 10 Steel Pipe: ASTM A 135 or ASTM A 795, Schedule 10 in NPS 5 and smaller; and NFPA 13-

specified wall thickness in NPS 6 to NPS 10; with factory- or field-formed, roll-grooved ends.

2.3 PIPE AND TUBE FITTINGS

A. Malleable-Iron Threaded Fittings: ASME B16.3.

B. Steel, Threaded Couplings: ASTM A 865.

C. Steel, Grooved-End Fittings: UL-listed and FM-approved, ASTM A 47, malleable iron or ASTM A 536, ductile iron;

with dimensions matching steel pipe and ends factory grooved according to AWWA C606.

D. Steel Pipe and Fittings: Threaded-End, Standard-Weight Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53/A 53M, ASTM A 135, or ASTM A

795, hot-dip galvanized with factory threaded ends.

1.) Steel Threaded Pipe Nipples: ASTM A 733, made of ASTM A 53/A 53M or ASTM A 106, Schedule 40, seamless

steel pipe hot-dip galvanized.

2.) Steel Threaded Couplings: ASTM A 865 hot-dip galvanized-steel pipe.

2.4 JOINING MATERIALS

A. Ductile-Iron, Flanged Joints: AWWA C115, ductile-iron or gray-iron pipe flanges, rubber gaskets, and steel bolts and

nuts.

B. Steel, Keyed Couplings: UL 213 and AWWA C606, for steel-pipe dimensions. Include ASTM A 536, ductile-iron

housing, rubber gaskets, and steel bolts and nuts.

C. Transition Couplings: AWWA C219, sleeve type, or other manufactured fitting the same size as, with pressure

rating at least equal to, and with ends compatible with piping to be joined.

D. Dissimilar-Material Piping Joints: Make joints using adapters compatible with materials of both piping systems.

2.5 GENERAL-DUTY VALVES

A. Refer to Division 22 Section "Valves" for gate, ball, butterfly, globe, and check valves not required to be UL listed

and FM approved.

2.6 SPRINKLERS

A. Automatic Sprinklers: With heat-responsive element complying with the following:

1.) UL 199, for applications except residential.

B. Sprinkler Types and Categories: Nominal 1/2-inch orifice for "Ordinary" temperature classification rating, unless

otherwise indicated or required by application.

C. Sprinkler types, features, and options include the following:

1.) Recessed concealed sprinklers with white cover

2.) Pendent & Upright sprinklers with guard in exposed ceiling areas.

D. Sprinkler Finishes:

1.) Recessed concealed sprinklers with white cover

2.) Pendent & Upright sprinklers bronze

E. Sprinkler Guards: Wire-cage type, including fastening device for attaching to sprinkler.

3. PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PIPING APPLICATIONS

A. Flanges, unions, and transition and special fittings with pressure ratings the same as or higher than system's

pressure rating may be used in aboveground applications, unless otherwise indicated.

B. Sprinkler Feed Mains and Risers: Use the following:

1.) NPS 4 and Smaller: Standard-weight steel pipe with threaded ends, cast- or malleable-iron threaded fittings,

and threaded joints.

2.) NPS 4 and Smaller: Standard-weight steel pipe with grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed

couplings; and grooved joints.

3.) NPS 4 and Smaller: Schedule 30 steel pipe with threaded ends, cast- or malleable-iron threaded fittings, and

threaded joints.

4.) NPS 4 and Smaller: Schedule 30 steel pipe with roll-grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed

couplings; and grooved joints.

5.) NPS 4 (DN 100) and Smaller: Grooved-end, Schedule 10 steel pipe; grooved-end fittings; grooved-end-pipe

couplings; and grooved joints.

C. Sprinkler Branch Piping: Use the following:

19.) NPS 4: Schedule 30 steel pipe with threaded ends, cast-or malleable-iron threaded fittings, and threaded

20.) NPS 4: Schedule 30 steel pipe with roll-grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed couplings; and

grooved joints.

21.) NPS 4: Schedule 10 steel pipe with roll-grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; and grooved joints.

3.2 VALVE APPLICATIONS

A. Drawings indicate valve types to be used. Where specific valve types are not indicated, the following requirements

apply:

1.) Fire-Protection-Service Valves: UL listed and FM approved for applications where required by NFPA 13.

a.) Shutoff Duty: Use gate valves.

2.) General-Duty Valves: For applications where UL-listed and FM-approved valves are not required by NFPA 13.

a.) Shutoff Duty: Use gate, ball, or butterfly valves.

b.) Throttling Duty: Use globe, ball, or butterfly valves.

3.3 JOINT CONSTRUCTION

A. Refer to Division 22 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping joint construction.

B. Steel-Piping, Grooved Joints: Use Schedule 40 steel pipe with cut or roll-grooved ends and Schedule 30 or thinner

steel pipe with roll-grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; and steel, keyed couplings. Assemble joints with

couplings, gaskets, lubricant, and bolts according to coupling manufacturer's written instructions.

C. Dissimilar-Piping-Material Joints: Construct joints using adapters or couplings compatible with both piping

materials. Use dielectric fittings if both piping materials are metal. Refer to Division 22 Section "Basic Mechanical

Materials and Methods" for dielectric fittings.

3.4 PIPING INSTALLATION

A. Refer to Division 22 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping installation.

B. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement

of piping. Install piping as indicated, as far as practical.

1.) Deviations from approved working plans for piping require written approval from authorities having

jurisdiction. File written approval with Architect before deviating from approved working plans.

C. Use approved fittings to make changes in direction, branch takeoffs from mains, and reductions in pipe sizes.

D. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. Unions are not required on flanged devices or in

piping installations using grooved joints.

E. Install flanges or flange adapters on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 and larger connections.

F. Install sprinkler piping with drains for complete system drainage.

G. Install sprinkler zone control valves, test assemblies, and drain risers adjacent to sprinkler risers when sprinkler

branch piping is connected to sprinkler risers.

H. Install alarm devices in piping systems.

I. Hangers and Supports: Comply with NFPA 13 for hanger materials and installation.

3.5 SPECIALTY SPRINKLER FITTING INSTALLATION

A. Install specialty sprinkler fittings according to manufacturer's written instructions.

3.6 SPRINKLER APPLICATIONS

A. General: Use sprinklers according to the following applications:

1.) Rooms without Ceilings: Upright sprinklers or Pendent Sprinklers with guard.

2.) Rooms with Suspended or Gypsum Ceilings: Flush Concealed Sprinklers.

B. Sprinkler Finishes: Use sprinklers with the following finishes:

1.) Upright, Pendent, and Sidewall Sprinklers: Chrome-plated in finished spaces exposed to view; rough bronze

in unfinished spaces not exposed to view.

2.) Flush Concealed Sprinklers: White with one piece cover.

3.7 SPRINKLER INSTALLATION

A. Install sprinklers in suspended ceilings in center of acoustical panels and tiles.

3.8 LABELING AND IDENTIFICATION

A. Install labeling and pipe markers on equipment and piping according to requirements in NFPA 13 and in Division 22

Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods."

3.9 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Flush, test, and inspect sprinkler piping according to NFPA 13, "System Acceptance" Chapter.

B. Replace piping system components that do not pass test procedures and retest to demonstrate compliance.

Repeat procedure until satisfactory results are obtained.

C. Report test results promptly and in writing to Architect and authorities having jurisdiction.

3.10 CLEANING

A. Clean dirt and debris from sprinklers.

B. Remove and replace sprinklers having paint other than factory finish.

3.11 PROTECTION

A. Protect sprinklers from damage until owner occupancy.

3.12 COMMISSIONING

A. Verify that specified tests of piping are complete.

B. Verify that damaged sprinklers and sprinklers with paint or coating not specified are replaced with new, correct

type.

C. Verify that sprinklers are correct types, have correct finishes and temperature ratings, and have guards as required

for each application.

D. Fill wet-pipe sprinkler piping with water.

E. Energize circuits to electrical equipment and devices.

F. Adjust operating controls and pressure settings.

G. Coordinate with fire alarm tests. Operate as required.

3.13 DEMONSTRATION

A. Demonstrate equipment, specialties, and accessories. Review operating and maintenance information.

B. Schedule demonstration with Owner with at least seven days' advance notice.

FIRE SPRINKLER INSTALLATION NOTES

1. FIRE SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR SHALL MODIFY AND RENOVATE EXISTING SYSTEM WITH LIKE MATERIALS AND INSTALLATION METHODS TO PROVIDE A 2013 NFPA 13 & CURRENT GEORGIA 120-3-3 AND 2012 INTERNATIONAL FIRE CODE COMPLIANT FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM FOR NEW SPACES. CPVC UNACCEPTABLE.

2. FIRE SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR TO COORDINATE WITH ARCHITECTURAL REFLECTED CEILING PLANS, HVAC, PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL PLANS FOR NEW CEILING WORK. CONTRACTOR SHALL RAISE, LOWER, & RELOCATE EXISTING BRANCHES AS REQUIRED TO ALLOW FOR NEW DUCTWORK. CONTRACTOR TO SUBMIT SHOP DRAWINGS DEPICTING THE SPRINKLER WORK TO OCCUR PER NFPA 13.

3. FIRE SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR SHALL INSTALL NEW CONCEALED HEADS W/WHITE COVER LOCATED IN THE CENTER NEW A/T CEILING TILE OR GYPSUM CEILING DEPICTED ON ARCHITECTURAL PLANS. UL LISTED FLEXIBLE CONNECTORS MAY BE UTILIZED.

4. LOCATE NEW HEADS IN CENTER OF A/T CEILING TILE. HEAD TEMPERATURE RATINGS SHALL BE COORDINATED WITH CEILING AMBIENT TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS AND HEAT SOURCES.

5. CONTRACTOR SHALL COORDINATE W/EXISTING FIELD CONDITIONS, SITE UTILITIES AND BUILDING FIRE SPRINKLER LAYOUT. INVESTIGATE EXISTING SYSTEM AND FIELD CONDITIONS TO DETERMINE RENOVATION REQUIREMENTS.

1. BASIC MECHANICAL MATERIALS & METHODS

A. ARRANGE FOR PIPE SPACES, CHASES, SLOTS, AND OPENINGS IN BUILDING STRUCTURE DURING PROGRESS OF

CONSTRUCTION, TO ALLOW FOR MECHANICAL INSTALLATIONS.

B. DRAWING PLANS, SCHEMATICS, AND DIAGRAMS INDICATE GENERAL LOCATION AND ARRANGEMENT OF PIPING

CONNECTIONS, ALARM SYSTEM, SAFETY DEVICES, AND SOURCE EQUIPMENT.

2.) PROVIDE OIL-FREE DRY NITROGEN, MEDICAL GASES, MATERIALS, AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR TESTING.

3.) LEVEL 1 PRESSURE MEDICAL GAS TESTING: USE OIL-FREE DRY NITROGEN, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED,

AND PERFORM PROCEDURES AND TESTS AS INDICATED IN NFPA 99 PERFORMANCE AND TESTING

PARAGRAPHS FOR PIPED GAS SYSTEMS. INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

a.) PERFORMANCE TESTING:

1. BLOW DOWN: CLEAR PIPING BEFORE CONNECTING SERVICE CONNECTIONS OR OUTLETS.

2. INITIAL PRESSURE TESTS: SUBJECT EACH PIPING SECTION TO TEST PRESSURE OF 1.5 TIMES

SYSTEM WORKING PRESSURE, BUT NOT LESS THAN 150 PSIG, BEFORE ATTACHING SYSTEM

COMPONENTS, AFTER INSTALLING STATION OUTLETS WITH TEST CAPS (IF SUPPLIED) IN PLACE,

AND BEFORE CONCEALING PIPING SYSTEM. MAINTAIN TEST UNTIL JOINTS ARE EXAMINED FOR

LEAKS BY MEANS OF SOAPY WATER. REPAIR LEAKS WITH NEW MATERIALS AND RETEST SYSTEMS.

3. CROSS-CONNECTION TESTS: DETERMINE THAT NO CROSS CONNECTIONS OF PIPING SYSTEMS

EXIST. DISCONNECT ALL SYSTEMS EXCEPT SYSTEM TO BE CHECKED. PRESSURIZE SYSTEM TO 50

PSIG. VERIFY THAT GAS FLOW FROM SERVICE CONNECTIONS AND OUTLETS IS ONLY FROM

SYSTEM BEING CHECKED. REPEAT FOR EACH SYSTEM. VERIFY CORRECT LABELING.

4. PURGE TESTS: PERFORM HEAVY INTERMITTENT PURGING OF PIPING AND FULL-FLOW PURGING

OF SERVICE CONNECTIONS.

5. STANDING-PRESSURE TESTS: INSTALL ASSEMBLED SYSTEM COMPONENTS AFTER TESTING

INDIVIDUAL SYSTEMS AS SPECIFIED ABOVE. SUBJECT SYSTEMS TO 24-HOUR STANDING-PRESSURE

TEST AT 20 PERCENT ABOVE NORMAL LINE PRESSURE. MUST BE WITNESSED BY AHJ / OWNER.

VERIFY THAT PRESSURE DIFFERENCES COMPLY WITH REQUIRED CALIBRATION. REPAIR LEAKS

WITH NEW MATERIALS AND RETEST SYSTEMS.

b.) SYSTEM VERIFICATION:

1. CROSS-CONNECTION TESTS: REPEAT CROSS-CONNECTION TEST ABOVE OR PERFORM ALTERNATE

TESTS WITH EACH GAS AT DIFFERENT PRESSURE.

2. FLOW TESTS: PERFORM FLOW TEST AT EACH OUTLET.

3. VALVE TESTS: VERIFY PROPER VALVE OPERATION.

4. ALARM TESTS: OPERATE SYSTEMS AND VERIFY PROPER WARNING INDICATION OF EACH MEDICAL

GAS PIPING SYSTEM FUNCTION.

5. PIPING PURITY TESTS: TEST FOR DEW POINT AND HYDROCARBONS AS COMPARED TO SOURCE

GAS.

6. FINAL TIE-END TESTS: VERIFY THAT ABOVE TESTS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMED.

7. OPERATIONAL PRESSURE TESTS: USE DESIGNATED SYSTEM GASES AND TEST FOR PRESSURE AND

FLOW.

8. MEDICAL GAS CONCENTRATION TESTS: TEST EACH GAS FOR REQUIRED CONCENTRATION.

9. LABELING: VERIFY CORRECT LABELING.

4.) LEVEL 1 VACUUM SYSTEM TESTING: USE OIL-FREE DRY NITROGEN, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED, AND

PERFORM PROCEDURES AND TESTS AS INDICATED IN NFPA 99 PERFORMANCE AND TESTING PARAGRAPHS

FOR PIPED VACUUM SYSTEMS. INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

a.) BLOW DOWN: CLEAR PIPING BEFORE CONNECTING SERVICE CONNECTIONS OR INLETS.

SYSTEMS AS SPECIFIED ABOVE. SUBJECT SYSTEMS TO 24-HOUR STANDING-PRESSURE TEST AT NOT LESS

THAN 60 PSIG.

e.) FINAL CROSS-CONNECTION TESTS: REPEAT CROSS-CONNECTION TEST ABOVE OR PERFORM ALTERNATE

4.7 SELECTIVE DEMOLITION, GENERAL

A. GENERAL: DEMOLISH AND REMOVE EXISTING CONSTRUCTION ONLY TO THE EXTENT REQUIRED BY NEW

CONSTRUCTION AND AS INDICATED. USE METHODS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE WORK WITHIN LIMITATIONS OF

GOVERNING REGULATIONS AND AS FOLLOWS:

1.) PROCEED WITH SELECTIVE DEMOLITION SYSTEMATICALLY, FROM HIGHER TO LOWER LEVEL. COMPLETE
