OLD Immigration (1820-1880)

• Came from Northern/Western Europe: primarily Germany and Ireland.

• Usually came with the entire family.• Religion: some Protestant, some who

were Catholic.• Physical Characteristics: blonde hair,

blue eyes, light complexion.

NEW Immigration (1880-1920)

• Came from Southern/Eastern Europe: Italy, Russia, Greece, Poland and the Slovak nations. Also from Asia: China and Japan.

• Sometimes the men came first and then sent for their families.

• Religion: Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist.• Physical Characteristics: Dark hair, dark eyes,

olive complextion.

Nativist Reaction

Restrictive Laws• Chinese Exclusion Act-

1882, the law prohibited Chinese workers from entering the U.S. Stayed in affect until 1943.

• Gentlemen’s Agreement- 1907, the “compromise” that said only professional Japanese workers would be allowed into the U.S.

Nativist Groups• “Know-Nothing Party”- the

American political party, formed in 1854 and worked against Irish-Catholic immigrants.

• Ku Klux Klan- the terrorist group resurfaces and expands its hatred to others besides African-Americans.
