BASS – proposal • I am going to produce a new music magazine in the sub-genre of dance

and clubbing in the form of a front cover and a double page spread as part of a promotional project for ‘BASS’ magazine.

• My working title at the moment is going to be called ‘BASS’ although I may change this throughout making the promotional project. This is going to be in the font style called ‘Digital Anarchy’, which is a very heavy and bold text which matches my colour scheme. The Dark block text also has random splat of paint on the text. This is to connote paint being thrown or what a glow stick might do if it was snapped. The colours I am going to be using is a black and probably dark background and the other colours are going to be; blue, pink, green and orange. These ours are going to be neon. The neon looks makes them look like glow sticks which connotes the atmosphere of a music festival especially at night or in the dark like in a club.

Page 4: Unit 13 - LO3

• This magazine is a dance and clubbing magazine who will compete with Mixmag, DJ times and shook.

• The magazine ‘BASS’ is going to contain content all about new clubs and festivals which are available in big cities such as; London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The magazine will include lots of photos about these clubs and festivals to show to the reader what it was like. The magazine will also personally review what it was like and it will give other peoples comments from the people who were there. The magazine will also look at the charts of music and what new artist have moved positions on the chart. Although the magazine won’t include a lot about the artists themselves as their competitors already do this and they want to be different as they are only small and can’t compete with their competitors. Although the magazine will include some pages about people with musical influence.

Page 5: Unit 13 - LO3

• The colour scheme of the front cover of the magazine will be a black background with other neon colours which are; blue, pink, green and orange. These colours are to connote a festival or club where glow sticks are used for everyone together to wave in the air. This should give off the vide of a festival or club to the people who look at the magazine on the shelves. However the double page spread is going to be different and it is only going to be one colour out of the Blue, pink, green and orange as each of those colours are supposed to show a different category in the magazine such as; green means interview.

• I am going to use adobe photoshop CS6 to produce the front cover and double page spread because it is a professional software which as many different features such as being able to manipulate photos so that they look different from the original photo after you have edited them. Some of the tool to do this are called the quick select tool which will make it easier to remove the unwanted background image off of my photos so I can just use the person in the image without anything extra in the background.

Page 6: Unit 13 - LO3

• The audience is most likely going to be both male and female within the ages of 18 – 25. Although the ages will vary. This audience will be social climber so they want to know everything about celebrities and famous artists. The ethnicity of these people are usually white males and females who like to go to festivals and music is a big part of their lives.

• I intend to make my magazine 60 pages as this is also similar to competitors as they have around 50-60 page sizes to try and compete with my magazine competitors and it will be A4 size which is 29.7cm x 42.0cm.

• My magazine will be produced on the first day of every month as it shows consistency in the magazine and it is easier to know when the next magazine is about to come out. It will cost £3.00 as this isn’t too expensive but is also cheaper than competitors such as Mixmag.

The Pug is near the artist and the headlines as it should gather the readers attention because they first look at the masthead, heading or main artist. They will also see a free poster or CD which should interest them in buying the magazine. It also connotes the importance of the free poster/CD.

JUMP – proposal • I am going to be producing a music magazine in the sub-genre

dance and clubbing. This will be in the form of a front cover and a double page spread as part of a promotional project for ‘Jump’ magazine. I am producing this because it gives me a clearer idea of what the magazine will actually be like and I will have a more in-depth understanding on what it will look like and what the final product will look like.

• My working title is ‘Jump’ at the moment although this may change in the process of the promotional project. The font which is going to be used is going to be ‘Hyperspace’ as it is a thin text which should connote a modern and cooler appeal to it compared to more bold and chunky text. The layout of my magazine is going to be similar to Mixmags own format as it looks consistent and being similar to its competitors to should take some of its readership. The colour scheme for ‘Jump’ is a light blue, pink and white. These colour are supposed to give off a summer vide to them and make the magazine connote being happy and relaxed.

Page 11: Unit 13 - LO3

• The sun-genre of ‘Jump’ is going to be dance and clubbing music. The magazine is going to compete with other magazines in the same sub-genre such as; Mixmag, tilllate and shook.

• The name of sub-genre entitles ‘Jump’ magazine will have lots of articles about; new and popular artists, festivals which have happened and interview with said artists. These articles will also include lots of picture which relate to the subject which should make the magazine more interesting to look at. The artists interview are big and small so that most readers will be interested in purchasing the magazine and it cover a wider variety of artists. The magazine will also show other people who aren’t artists but still have a musical influence.

Page 12: Unit 13 - LO3

• ‘Jumps’ front cover and double page spread will use the colours of blue, pink and white as their colour scheme on both examples. This is so that it shows my magazine is consistent the denotations are the summer feeling is being relaxed with friends. The font I am going to use is called ‘Hyperspace’, this text is tall and thin. The connotations of the text being tall and thin is that it is new, modern and cool. This is appealing to my readers as they are always looking for new hypes to get onto. The colour blue was chosen as it represents the colour of the sky in the summer and blue can also represent a swimming pool which is associated with summer as that’s when people usually go on holiday to relax. The colour pink also connotes flower in a summers field but I have also chosen this colour as it doesn’t excludes girls into my magazine.

• I am going to use the software called adobe photoshop CS6 to construct my front cover and double page spread because the software is very professional especially when it comes in importing photos where the software is very good at manipulating colour. Some of the tools in adobe photoshop that will be particularly beneficial in constructing front cover will be the ruler tool where I can line up everything which I put onto my magazine so everything is in exactly the correct place so they are parallel to each other.

Page 13: Unit 13 - LO3

• The audience is mostly male with only a small percentage of the fans being female. Their ages varies between 18 – 25 however there will be some people who are either older or younger. This audience will be very materialistic and what they value in a magazine is what other people have like their cars and big houses and they will also be interested in the lives of the featured artists. The majority of this audience will be white males who like to party and live in the city.

• I want to make my magazine only 55 pages long so it can compete with other magazines in the same genre and it can be competitively priced. It will also just be A4 as this is small enough and an average size of most magazines. This is 29.7cm x 42.0cm.

• This magazine will be sold on the 4th Monday of every month as it is consistent and there is the same amount of time for each issue. Also it is more of a refresher of celebrities and other artists updates on what they are doing and what festivals are good.

Page 14: Unit 13 - LO3

Final magazine idea ‘Jump’• The masthead I am going to be using is ‘Jump’ in the front style ‘Hyperspace’. This

masthead connotes a atmosphere at a festival or a club. This masthead is directed at my target audience as its looks connotes a slim and modern look which is what my target audience aspires to be and values, especially in a magazine .

• The market position of my magazine is going to be a magazine which has already been established for one year. This is because they need to establish themselves as a business and brand enough so that it seems realistic that they would be able to get interview with music artists as this would be unlikely with a new magazine.

• As the genre of dance and clubbing music is niche my competitors are going to be Mixmag, tillate and shook. They aren’t a lot of other competitors in this genre which means it will be hard to compete with the bigger magazines such as Mixmag.

• My target audience is going to be 18 – 25 males and females who are materialistic although there spending power is going to be low as they are either students or manual workers.

Page 15: Unit 13 - LO3

House Style• The colour scheme is going to be a blue, pink and white. The magazine

front cover is supposed to connote summer and relaxation. The colour blue is supposed to connote the summers sky or a swimming pool like from the inspiration on the mood board in LO2. In a swimming pool you feel weightlessness which is a similar feeling to relaxation as it is like our being taken away or a heavy burden has been taken away from you.

• The pink represents the feeling of summer as it connotes flowers. I have decided to include pink more in my magazine than any other colour as it should attract more females into reading it as the majority of the readership is male. Further more the colour pink also doesn’t put off male readers. Magazines in this genre won’t use a lot of pink but very dark colour which I think puts off female viewers and my magazine can gain the female readership as other magazines have not adjusted to their values.

Page 16: Unit 13 - LO3

House styles

The magazine masthead is going to be positioned at the very top of the front cover. This is going to be the biggest piece of text on the front page. The font style is going to be ‘Hyperspace’ and it is going to be white. The denotations of the masthead font are modern and new as the font style is thin and long compared to other competitors who have very bold text. The modern and new look of the masthead will appeal to my target audience as they are according toMaslow's hierarchy ‘explorers’ so they are always looking for social changes and they want to know what the next big trend is going to be so that theycan be part of it.

Page 17: Unit 13 - LO3

House styles• On my magazine I am going to have a similar design to

‘Mixmag’ were they have a very consistent house styles in and out side their magazine. The page numbers will all be in the same font and colour. Next to the page number will either be the date issued of the magazine or the magazines website. The date or website will appear every other page one after the other. Also with an interval from two different categories or interview there will be an social media icon with the name of the social media page somewhere on the first page to the next content.

Page 18: Unit 13 - LO3

Photo-shoot plan• I am going to use the masthead ‘Jump’ as it connotes a party or clubbing like vide and

atmosphere. This relates to the sub-genre of music which is included in my magazine and what my target audience is interested in and values.

• This is going to be a photo shoot for the first issue for ‘Jump’ magazine which is in the genre of clubbing and dance music. These pictures will be used specifically for the front cover and interview over a double page spread inside the magazine.

• The Technical codes I am going to put this person in is going to be them facing directly at the camera so that there full attention is on the camera but their head is going to be facing the ground and they will be looking up at the camera like they have only just noticed it. At post production, I intend to remove the background and replace it with light reflecting off water to give a summer and relaxing feel to it. The lighting for the photos will be in high key so there is more color on the persons face.

• The clothes that john will be wearing is going to be a t-shirt as that is the type of clothing people wear in the summer. He will also have a pair of aviator glasses which are very reflective which should connote the type of attitude which he has. John will also have a new yellow ice watch on his wrist to show a DJ’s expensive taste and style.

Page 19: Unit 13 - LO3

Referral images

• I have also taken inspiration from the Mixmag magazine where it featured in Julio Bashmore where he looks mysterious on the front cover of the September 2014 edition.

Page 20: Unit 13 - LO3

Casting

• For the photo a I am just going to use the persons head and torso in the picture as then when it is put into my magazine the persons face can be bigger whereas if it was the whole person’s body then their legs would take up a lot of space on the page. The type of person I am going to use is a young white male. I am using him because he is someone who is the stereotype of the people in my target audience as I can’t get an actually artist this will be the best way to portray one.

Page 21: Unit 13 - LO3

Model requirements

• The person I am going to photograph is going to be a thin young male who wears a normal colored t-shirt. They will also have a specific hair style and also have a plain expression on their face so that they look more serious and hopefully cooler. The person should be 6ft and is similar to the artist Jalio Bashmore who has the same type of mysterious look about him.

Page 22: Unit 13 - LO3

Wardrobe and look

• In the pictures the clothing needs to be very specific to what my readership also where so that they can relate to the magazine more. The person is going to be wearing jeans and relatively plain t-shirt. I am going to use these clothes as they are very simple and lots other people where this clothing. Although I don’t want the picture to look too different as I think it will turn away some people as they will only want a normal magazine.

Page 23: Unit 13 - LO3

Hair and Make-up

• There won’t be any make up for my magazine photo shoot as it is only males taking part in it. Although the hair will be done is styles of short around the sides has longer at the top which should be pushed over to one side.

Where it showed be takenThe photos which I am going to take are going to be in front of a plain background which has one plain colour so it will be easier to edit out using adobe Photoshop, as I am going to import a different background for the front cover.

Page 24: Unit 13 - LO3

When should the photo shoot be taken ?

• I am going to take the photos in the middle of the day as that is the time when it is the lightest so I should get a better picture as the model and there clothing should appear brighter. I would like for the weather to be sunny and bright to also connote a better summer feeling.

Hand drawn drafts

This hand drawn draft is going to be helpful when laying out my front cover as I already know where I want my artist to be placed on the cover, which is going to be on the left. I also have a through ideas where everything thing else is going to go and how big each of the features are going to be like the barcode and the masthead.I have placed the image over the masthead as it connotes that the artist is the most important. This is also the reason why the artist takes up the majority of the front cover and that it is the only image on the cover. The ‘Plus’ heading is over the artist as it includes important information so is next to the important artist but not taking up too much space as it is only an extra. The heading which is the artists name is also next to the artist eye line as it connotes a similar importance compared to if it was closer to the bottom of the page.

Page 29: Unit 13 - LO3

This hand drawn draft for the double page spread is going to a rough idea where the text and the image will go and how it will appear on the page. It also shows where the quote will be as well as the second image and headline.

Page 30: Unit 13 - LO3

Graphic layoutI have created a graphic layout before making my magazine as on Photoshop. This design will help me when creating the front cover to know what I want it to look like. This is probably more helpful I found than the drafts as it has showed an accurate size of what each element of the front cover is going to look like. I also found it useful as I was able to create new layout with the same shapes which would make other issues of my magazine look different as I have created a template for other ideas.

Draft ArticleThe interview which inspired me was the Mixmags coverage on Carl Coxs and in my magazine I will be interviewing John Allen who is also going to have his picture on the front cover with his name showing that there is an exclusive interview inside. • What is your average day like ?• Well, normally I like to start the day at the gym. I think it is the best way to start off the day by being

healthy and active. Whereas for the rest of the day can be anything. I like to work on music by either listening to it or just playing around on the computer. At night my friends and I like to go to the night clubs.

• Is it hard to stay ahead of the game ?• Yes it is. With so many new artists and new technology on the market it is hard to make sure that you to

know what is happening all the time. I personally like to use the newest technology when I edit my music as I can make better quality content for my fans would will appreciate the extra work I put into my music. Although it’s not all about the latest technology. You need to know everything about new artists and what is popular as trends are always changing.

• What does it feel like when you are performing on stage?• When I perform in front of a crowd on stage it is like no other feeling. I was born to perform for peoples

entertainment. You become alive when you are facing thousands of people who are all looking at you waiting and expecting your very best. It’s the best part of my job and if I wasn’t lucky enough to be here than I wouldn’t know what I would be doing.

• Where is the best place to go clubbing?• I love going into London as the type of people you meet as always so cool and every time you go there you

will always have a different experience which you can’t get anywhere else. That is why it is the best. • What was your holiday like in Las Vegas last week?• It was really good thank you. I think it is a well-deserved break from what I have been doing recently and

to send some time relaxing with my friends and family was nice.

Page 35: Unit 13 - LO3

• Are you working on any new music?• At the moment I am currently promoting my new album called ‘early

mornings’ which is going to be released next Friday. I haven’t been doing anything at the moment as I have just been really busy but I have got some good ideas for the future.

• Had you ever thought you’ll be doing something else?• As I child I always wanted to be a police officer but when I was about 15 I fell

in love with music and wanted to make it my lives work to make other people happy by my influence in their lives.

• Did you ever think that you would get this far?• Never. Without the support of my friends, family and fans I would have ever

become as popular as I am now today. It did take a long time to get where I am now and sometimes I thought of giving up but instead I had the support to keep pushing.

• Why did you get into the dance and clubbing genre?• Like I said when I was 15 I had become interested in what the music was

at all the popular clubs. When I found out how to make it is just messed about playing it I never thought I would get this far.

• What’s in store for the rest of the year?• Like I said at the moment I will be promoting the ‘late nights’ album but after

that you might be able to see another album near the end of the year.

Page 36: Unit 13 - LO3

Software

I will be using Photoshop CS5.1 as it is a professional photo editing software regularly used in the magazine business and it is highly credited for begin very detailed for production. The types of tools which I will be using are the quick selection tool were I can easily get rid of a background by selecting it and deleting it. The tool will automatically select the background image which will save time compared to using the rubber tool to manually remove the background. There is also a stamp tool which can be used to copy a part of the image to cover up an imperfections. For example if there was a reflection in the main image which you where going to use, the stamp tool could be used to cover an unwanted image in that photo.

Page 37: Unit 13 - LO3

Further development possibilities

The original front cover wasn’t fit for purpose because of a variety of different reasons which had to be changed. The biggest issue with the front cover was that the cover image was too unconventional as John still had his school bag on and he also wasn’t looking at the camera. So I retook the photo. Now John is looking at the camera and smiling. He also doesn’t have his bag on. Also the mast head as over his head which I was able to put behind him by moving the layers. Another text issue was the cover story font style was too big. I was able to reduce the gap between the letters so it was the same size but didn’t take up too much space. Another improvement I made was that the text needed to be inside the barcode. I did this by inserting a black white box behind the text.

Page 38: Unit 13 - LO3

Conclusion

In terms of my pre-production plan my house styles plan is very detailed about the font and colours which will be included with reasons of the connotations in everything which I have chosen to include. Furthermore, my initially proposals included a variety of ideas which related to the dance and clubbing genre. Although, the photo shoot plan could have been improved with more information about what the model was wearing and where the photos will be taken, with reasoning behind each.

Page 39: Unit 13 - LO3

The production process of my magazine was also very successful. The front cover of my magazine replicates the Mixmag front cover and it mirrors what I included in my pre-production plan. This is the same for my double page spread which continues the same style as the front cover.
