Quebec was founded by the French explorer Champlain in the early 17th century. It is the only North American city tohave preserved its ramparts, together with the numerous bastions, gates and defensive works that still surround OldQuebec. The Upper Town, built on the cliff, has remained the religious and administrative centre, with its churches,convents and other monuments like the Dauphine Redoubt, the Citadel and Chteau Frontenac. Together with the LowerTown and its ancient districts, it forms an urban ensemble that is one of the best examples of a forti ed colonial city.

By far one of the most beautiful cities Ive ever visited. Truly spectacular. I feltas though Id walked through a time-warp. The integrity of the buildings andstreets from a by-gone era has been preserved with the utmost care. AntiguaGuatemala feels like a living museum.

Antigua, the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, was founded in the early 16th century. Built 1,500meters above sea level, in an earthquake-prone region, it was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1773 butits principal monuments are still preserved as ruins. In the space of under three centuries the city, which wasbuilt on a grid pattern inspired by the Italian Renaissance, acquired a number of superb monuments.

The Mayan town of Uxmal, in Yucatan, was founded c. A.D. 700. It had some 25,000 inhabitants and is considered one ofthe high points of Mayan art and architecture. The layout of the buildings, which date from between 700 and 1000, reveals aknowledge of astronomy. The Pyramid of the Soothsayer, as the Spaniards called it, dominates the ceremonial centre, whichhas well-designed buildings decorated with a profusion of symbolic motifs and sculptures depicting Chaac, the god of rain.

It is such a joy just to gaze at the Opera House from different angles, atdifferent times of day (and night). It didnt disappoint from up close, either.Such a pleasure to run your hands over the concrete bricks and ceramic tiles.And the inside was stunning, too. Superb acoustics.

A great urbansculpture set in a remarkable waterscape, at the tip of a peninsula projecting into Sydney Harbour, the building hashad an enduring in uence on architecture. In 1957, when the project of the Sydney Opera House was awarded byan international jury to Danish architect Jrn Utzon, it marked a radically new approach to construction.
