What is UNESCO?

UNESCO's mission, functions and fields of competence:

UNESCO's mission is to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science and culture. Its main concern is to foster and maintain intellectual solidarity.

UNESCO's three main functions are:

1. to advance the mutual knowledge and understanding of peoples2. to give fresh impulse to education and to the spread of culture,

and3. to help to maintain, increase and disseminate knowledge.

A World Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations.

Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.

Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world’s heritage.

Situated on a group of islands off Helsinki, Suomenlinna was built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and a base for the Archipelago Fleet. Work on the fortress was begun in the mid-18th century. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Finland’s most popular tourist attractions.
