The box set also features the BBC documentary Barenboim on Beethoven: Nine Symphonies that changed the world by Michae

Captured within the documentary, Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra take the complete cycle of Beethove

Finally, a reissue from the self-proclaimed worldsworst orchestra! The Portsmouth Sinfonia wasfounded by British composer Gavin Bryars while hewas lecturing at the Portsmouth College of Art in1970. Bryars wanted to liberate classical music from

the pomposity of the academic tradition and theconcert hall audience by bringing classical music tothe masses in a radical new way. His solution? Toform an orchestra composed of non musicians, or ofmusicians playing a totally unfamiliar instrument, anto set said orchestra loose on well known classicalwarhorses that could be played by ear, as most ofthe musicians could not sight read. The result wasironically, hailed by some in the classicalestablishment as a profound exploration of thenature of music, as the trained musicians kept theorchestra more or less hewing close to the melody,while the untrained players earnest attempts to perform the compositions, and the resulting missednotes, formed atonal clouds of sound with a baresuggestion of the piece. Even more improbably, thePortsmouth Sinfonia became a popular sensation,selling out the Royal Albert Hall and landing arecording contract.

Of George Clintons two girl groups, The Brides ofFunkenstein commanded the lioness share ofattention, but Parlet was the funkier of the two; asClinton put it, sexual satisfaction guaranteed, thatswhat this group is all about! Parlets roots actuallywent way back in the Parliament/Funkadeliccosmology; singers J eanette Washington andDebbie Wright were the first female members of theband, and the third member of the trio, MalliaFranklin, introduced Uncle J am to Bootsy Collins,and Bootsy became a full-fledged member ofFunkadelic and was an instrumental part of

their America Eats Its Young album released onWestbound in 1972. Franklin and Wright were goneby the time Parlets second album, Invasion of theBooty Snatchers, was recorded, replaced by ShirleyHayden and J anice Evans, so calling Parlet agroup is a little bit of a misnomer.
