The Walking Dead is an American television drama series developed by Frank Darabont. It is based on the comic book series of the same name. The series stars Andrew Lincoln as sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes, who awakens from a coma to find the world dominated by flesh-eating “walkers”, resembling the zombie of a George A Romero’s horror movies. He sets out to find his family and encounters many other survivors along the way.

The Walking Dead premiered in October of 2010 on AMC in the United States. Based on its reception, AMC renewed the series for a second season of 13 episodes. Two episodes into the second season, AMC announced that the show would return for a third and fourth season.

The series has been very well received and has received countless award nominations, including a Writers Guild of America Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Television Series Drama. The series has also attained strong Neilsen ratings, beating various records for a cable series, including receiving 10.9 million viewers for its season three premiere to become the most-watched basic cable drama in telecast history.

PLOT OUTLINE

Based on one of the most successful and popular comic books of all time, written by Robert Kirkman, AMC’s The Walking Dead captures the ongoing human drama following a zombie apocalypse. The series follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rock Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, Teachers, Strike Back), who are traveling in search of a safe and secure home. However, instead of the zombies, it is the living who remain that truly become the walking dead. Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer) plays Shane Walsh, Rick’s sheriff’s department partner before the apocalypse, and Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break), is Rick’s wife, Lori Grimes. Additional cast include: Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Jeffrey DeMunn, Chandler Riggs, Iron E. Singleton, and Melissa McBride. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club recently unveiled their sixth studio album, titled Specter At the Feast, is set for release March 19. The trio will be overseas during the week of release but are pleased to announce their first headline run in North America since 2010, in support of Beat The Devil’s Tattoo. The tour kicks off April 22nd in their original hometown of San Francisco and has 3 Canadian dates in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Specter At The Feast has already garnered early praise from Rolling Stone who called it a “superb new album,” while NPR crowned the rock ‘n’ roll pioneers “ones to watch in 2013” and called the album “more direct, more heartfelt and more honestly beautiful.”

The first single “Let The Day Begin” is actually a cover, and a thoughtful homage to beloved Michael Been of The Call, also Robert Been’s father and honorary “fourth member” of BRMC. This song propelled The Call into mass consciousness when it reached #1 in the US on the mainstream Rock charts in 1989 and became their biggest crossover hit, thanks to the big arena-rock hook. The song embodies The Call’s optimistic message and BRMC rip through the roaring track as if it was their own.

AroarA is the new duo from Montreal’s Andrew Whiteman (Broken Social Scene founding member, Apostle of Hustle) and Ariel Engle. They play amplified cigar box guitars and use a 404 sampler to trigger mellotrons and Black Sabbath bells. It is a new type of minimalism, which allows the emotions to come through unimpeded by bombast or blarney. Vocal duets, twin guitar lines and thundercloud drum machines are their stock and trade. AroarA’s first foray is based on the work of avant-garde American poet, Alice Notley. Her song fragments, along with powerful imagery throughout the poems, inspired AroarA to transform the work into music. With her permission, they used the words from each poem to make faux-folk song forms and then added beats, melodies, and vintage sounds to create their self-titled debut EP and future full length entitled, "In the Pines". The effect the music has on listeners is otherworldly; both ghostlike and visceral. AroarA’s sound is not easily compared. It leaves you with the uncanny feeling of something both equally familiar and foreign. The album was recorded in various living rooms across Canada and mixed impeccably and minimally by Sandro Perri (Constellation Records). The band continues to be busy, finding time to create a new supergroup with Feist and Snowblink (performing a round robin of each other’s songs) and going out on the road again with Martha Wainwright on a string of dates slotted for early March across Canada, before heading off to play SXSW. Born in 1924, Thompson grew up in poverty in Detroit. He always wanted to play saxophone and taught himself to read music long before he could afford to get an instrument. He picked up early experience after high school playing with the big bands of Erskine Hawkins, Lionel Hampton and Louis Armstrong. Thompson worked on 52nd Street, was a member of Billy Eckstine's bop big band, and was a key soloist with Count Basie during 1945-46. He had opportunities to record with both Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker in Los Angeles, worked with the Stars of Swing, and made many records in L.A. including taking a classic ballad feature on “Just One More Chance."

The reason for this is clear. In 1946 Byas left the United States to settle in Europe and, other than one visit in 1970, he never returned. While he played great in Europe and recorded fairly often, he was almost totally forgotten by the American jazz world.

MAIDEN ENGLAND ‘88 CONCERT TO BE RELEASED ON DVD

Now available for the very first time on DVD, this live show was filmed across two sold-out nights at Birmingham N.E.C Arena, UK in November 1988 during the band’s “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son World Tour”. Disc one contains the concert which has been specially upgraded and extended from the existing 1989 longform VHS release and now includes three previously unreleased encores: Running Free, Run To The Hills and Sanctuary thereby completing the full concert with a total running time of 110 minutes . Maiden’s own Film Producer and Director Andy Matthews went back to the 1988 edit and painstakingly remastered each shot digitally; colour correcting and grading to give the image the best possible look from that time. As well as the VHS stereo sound track by Martin Birch, the band’s producer between 1981 and 1993, the DVD also includes a brand new 5.1 audio surround mix by Maiden’s current producer Kevin Shirley. The concert was meticulously directed and edited by bass player and founder member Steve Harris, so as to capture the performance from a fans-eye view of the stage, focusing fully on the music, the elaborate stage production and the lighting. Add into the mix an electrifying set list and of course Eddie, and Maiden England now offers a snapshot of a bygone era in which the band, as they continue to do today, devote their all in delivering the ultimate live experience for their fans. Disc two is an extensive bonus disc featuring an exclusive documentary charting Part 3 in the History of Iron Maiden. This 40-minute film comprises recent interviews with the five band members and manager, Rod Smallwood. Picking up the story in the aftermath of the ‘84/85 World Slavery tour, this interesting and insightful documentary sees the band speak candidly about their memories of an exciting and occasionally turbulent period from which would emerge the albums Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son. As the Eighties began to draw to a close, so did another chapter in Maiden’s compelling history. Other special extras on the bonus disc include Twelve Wasted Years. First released as a longform VHS in 1987 and available for the first time on DVD, this documentary runs for 90 minutes and includes

archive interviews and dynamic live footage from the band’s begin-nings in the now legendary Ruskin Arms pub, via London’s Mar-quee club and three World Tours. Five promo videos for the singles from the aforementioned albums are also featured and have been carefully restored and improved upon from the original films using the very latest software with the audio remastered in digital stereo. Manager Rod Smallwood comments “We’ve been busy upgrad-ing this concert footage for a long time, with our in-house Film Producer and Director Andy Matthews working tirelessly to weave his magic yet again!. The 1989 VHS video has been largely unavail-able for many years and we know how eagerly our fans have been awaiting the new version so we wanted to give it the best possible treatment. The current Maiden England World Tour which contin-ues later this year revisits much of the set list and production from the initial 1989 VHS release so it will be interesting to compare just how much has changed in terms of our 2013 live show production, especially with all the advances in modern technology and the improvements we’ve been able to make to the set”. The Maiden England ‘88 concert soundtrack will also be made avail-able on 2CD album and Limited Edition double vinyl picture disc. Have A Little Fun is a collection of tunes about the hu-man condition… songs about love, happiness, loss, yearn-ing, deception, forgiveness and confusion. Joining vocalist extraordinaire Alex Pangman on much of this project, is the incomparable Bucky Pizzarelli, a guitarist who’s worked with everyone from Benny Goodman, to Les Paul, to Stephane Grappelli, “Bucky is ‘the real deal.’ He’s a charming man who with open arms welcomed me to his musical world, and when he starts to strum, you pay attention. He’s like an entire rhythm section.” Alex’s stalwart band The Alleycats make up the rest of this disc, with the shining addition of Brigham Phillips on trum-pet. Included here are a few of Alex’s own originals in the 1930s style. Of note is The Fog Song, which features the great Laurie Bower on mournful trombone and Melancholy Lul-laby. Great classic songs from a bygone era are also included - such as Stardust, I’m Confessin’, and Undecided, to name a few. These are the songs that got Alex hooked on this won-derful era of music.

Project overview:By 1970, weary and wary of the fame game in Los Angeles, with all the trappings of “the star-maker machinery” surrounding him at every turn, ex-Byrd Gene Clark was looking for a refuge.

Events over the previous four years had elevated the reclusive Kan-sas-raised country boy to the very top of the rock ’n’ roll pantheon. Heralded as America’s Beatles, The Byrds had scaled the heights in the summer of 1965 with their debut single, “Mr. Tambourine Man,” and followed it with a string of hits that collectively came to define what was dubbed folk-rock: jingle-jangle electric 12-string guitar, tambourine, lush harmonies and poetic lyrics, often from Gene’s own pen as the group’s principal songwriter, over a steady 4/4 rock beat. With a little help from Bob Dylan, The Byrds gave rock ’n’ roll a literary sensibility; it was, as one critic termed it, beat with brains. In his songwriting, Gene had come to embrace the Dylan style of oblique lyric poetry and accrued considerable atten-tion for his songs, much to the chagrin of his band mates.

Gene began exploring the nature of spirituality and the human condition in his lyrics, his curiosity piqued by friend Philip O’Leno. “Philip had his spiritual library and he read all that stuff, philo-sophical stuff, spirituality, mysticism,” states Clark’s first wife Carlie. “Gene loved all that but he wouldn’t read it. He would ask Philip about it all. I never saw Gene read a book. Sometimes I would read what he wrote and have no idea where that was coming from

within him.” Adds Philip, “Gene would ask me sometimes about what I was reading. Gene was spiritual in his own unique way at that point because he had a real love for humanity and all people. He was inquisitive on a higher level, and things like earth energies, synchronicity, mythology, collective consciousness interested him. I would mention things but we didn’t go into detail.” Raised a Catho-lic and schooled by nuns, Gene was not a practicing Catholic; how-ever, despite a lingering resentment, he nonetheless retained a solid Christian grounding. Although left in demo form, “Jimmy Christ” and “Please Mr. Freud” are songs that draw on these themes. Carlie recalls that Gene also engaged in astral projecting. “He used to wake me up in the middle of the night and say to me that he had been travelling. ‘I was up above the bed looking at us sleeping,’ he’d say. One time he told me he saw himself on a motorcycle riding through Laurel Canyon. He was up above the bike watching himself ride. Mentally he would go places where most people don’t go. He would leave his body and he wasn’t uncomfortable with that.”

Project overview:Crime and the City Solution was formed in 1977 in Sydney Australia by Simon Bonney, most associated with the post-punk and art-punk scenes. In the early 1980s, when band was based in London and Berlin, the lineup also included Mick Harvey (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds/The Birthday Party), Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps) & Rowland S Howard (The Birthday Party) – with this lineup they recorded their debut album. 1987 saw Crislo Haas (DAF, Liasons Dangereuses) and Alexander Hacke (Einsturzende Neubauten) join the band as well. Through 1990 they released four studio albums. German film director Wim Wenders included their music in his films Wings of Desire and Until the End of the World.

American Twilight was recorded in Detroit and includes ad-ditional members David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower/Woven Hand) and Jim White (Dirty Three). Simon Bonney continues to be the central member of the band. American Twilight will be Crime & the City Solution’s first new album since 1990’s Paradise Discotheque.

Sir Adrian Boult was born on 8th April 1889 in Chester and died on 22nd February 1983 in London and hence 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of his death. He was attending concerts first in Liverpool, primarily with Hans Richter, and then in London, whilst a pupil at Westminster School, with Sir Henry Wood, Claude Debussy, Arthur Nikisch and Richard Strauss. He met Elgar for whose music he was to do so much during his life as was another composer he befriended whilst at Christ Church, Oxford, before graduating in 1912, Ralph Vaughan Williams.

He spent a year studying in Leipzig where Arthur Nikisch had the greatest influence on him. He gained experience conducting for both the Royal Opera House, where he assisted in the first production there of Wagner’s Parsifal , and Serge Diaghilev’s ballet company. He was appointed conductor of the City of Birmingham Orchestra in 1924 and six years later the BBC made him director of music where he established the BBC Symphony Orchestra and became its chief conductor.

During these years he introduced works by Bartók, Stravinsky and the Second Viennese School composers – Schönberg, Webern and Berg including his opera Wozzeck.

Forced to leave the BBC when he reached their retirement age, he became chief conductor of the LPO retiring in 1957. He became a champion of British music, giving numerous performances of Bliss, Britten, Delius, Tippett, Walton and Holst, whose Planets he had premiered, and the aforementioned Elgar and Vaughan Williams. This set brings together all the recordings he made of the latter starting in 1940 to the early 1950’s.

There was a pause until 1967 when he started to commit this set’s stereo recordings to disc ending in 1975. He continued to give concerts and record for a further three years until retiring just before reaching the age of 90.

CD 13 includes audio footage of Sir Adrian in rehearsal.

This 5-CD collection sees Otto Klemperer lead the Philharmonia and New Philharmonia orchestras in compelling performances of works by Wagner and Richard Strauss. Montserrat Caballé was one of the most stimulat-ing and refined singers in opera, concert and recital in the second half of the 20th century. This CD, together with the 5-CD set The Sound of Montserrat Caballé, is being released to mark the diva’s 80th birthday.

Born in Barcelona on 23 April 1933, she studied at the Barcelona Liceo and made her concert debut there in 1954. After opera engagements at Basle

and Bremen and guest appearances in Milan, Vienna and Lisbon, she became a major interna-tional star in 1965 when she substituted for an ailing Marilyn Horne in a concert performance of Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia in New York. Her long and highly successful career has encompassed a wide range of repertoire, including roles in a number of demanding bel canto operas in which she followed Maria Callas, who had brought these works back into public favour.
