UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUEThe European Champion Clubs Cup was launched son after UEFAs first Congress (2 March 1955 2@VIenna). It wasnt a UEFA initiative. Many members were more interested in establishing a national team competition, meanwhile LEquipe were looking for a European-wide club competition. The format was designed to be played on Wednesdays under floodlights.Originally, it wasnt stipulated that the participating teams had to be the champions of their country; instead they invited clubs that they considered had the most fan appeal. UEFA was founded in June 1954.The first European Champion Clubs Cup fixture was played in Lisbon, and Sporting Clube de Portugal and FK Partizan (Yugoslavia) got a draw (3-3). FK Partizan won the return leg in Belgrade 5-2 to advance to the next round.Real Madrid CF won the first five finals. AFC Ajax and FC Bayern Mnchen won three consecutive finals. Liverpool FC has got four victories between 1977 and 1984, and in 2005 they won again with an outstanding 3-0 comeback against AC Milan on penalties in the competitions most exciting and memorable final. Real Madrid, Milan and Barcelona have been the most successful sides in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. In the 1992/1993 season it changed the format, adding the group stage followed by the traditional knockout elements.
