Top-flight European football continues on ESPN: the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals and Semifinals

European football‟s most prestigious club competition, the UEFA Champions League, continues on ESPN in April with coverage of Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches. Defending champions Barcelona of Spain, the clear-cut favorites, are out to become the first side to lift the trophy two years running since Italy‟s AC Milan accomplished the feat in 1989 & 1990. At the same time, their domestic league rivals, Real Madrid, are banking on inspired play from Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo to keep them in the hunt. The First Knockout Round was marked by some grand duels between England and Italy, as Jose Mourniho led his sharp Inter Milan side against his former club, Chelsea, while AC Milan took on last year‟s runner-up to Barcelona, Manchester United. With midfield talent David Beckham lined up with AC Milan against his former Manchester teammates, the round was a spicy one. The first film, "Muhammad and Larry" will debut on Sunday, April 18th at 8:00pm, and we will air a new film each Sunday until the start of the World Cup. In the weeks of training before the fight, documentarians Albert and David Maysles took an intimate look at Ali trying to convince the world and perhaps himself, that he was still ¿The Greatest.¿ At the same time, they documented the mild-mannered and undervalued champion Holmes as he confidently prepared to put an end to the career of a man for whom he had an abiding and deep affection for. In the raw moments after Ali‟s humbling in this one-sided fight, it was not fully comprehended what the Maysles brothers had actually captured on film. An era ended when the braggadocio and confidence were stripped away in the ring, and the world‟s greatest hero was revealed to be a man. Here for the first time is the unseen

filmed build up to that fight, accompanied by freshly shot interviews by Albert Maysles with members from both the Ali and Holmes camps, as well as others who were prime witnesses to this poignant foolhardy attempt at courage.”

The UEFA Europa League continues in April on ESPN: the Quarterfinals and Semifinals

The UEFA Europa League, European football‟s second-tier club competition, continues on ESPN in April with coverage of the Quarterfinals and Semifinals. The holders, Ukraine‟s Shaktar Donetsk, is aiming to follow their UEFA Cup victory last year by taking the inaugural UEFA Europa League crown. The side they beat in Istanbul, Germany‟s Werder Bremen, is also a solid favorite, joined by Austria‟s FC Salzburg, the only side to finish the Group Stage with a 100% record, and Hamburger SV, pushing to be on the field for the Final at their home stadium, Hamburg Arena. Among the eight sides transferring from the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 32 were England‟s Liverpool, the giant killers from Russia, Rubin Kazan, and Italy‟s Juventus, who in one of the best matches of that round took on famed Dutch club Ajax. Other matchups saw Italy‟s AS Roma facing Greece‟s Panathinaikos, England‟s Fulham taking on Shaktar Donetsk, Hamburger taking on another Dutch giant, PSV Eindhoven, and Australian midfielder Tim Cahill and England‟s Everton taking the field against Sporting Clube de Portugal. Italy‟s league title, the „scudetto,‟ seems to be solidly anchored in its home of the last four seasons, with Inter Milan. The elite Spanish Primera League continues all month on ESPN

The Spanish Primera League continues its reign as one of the recognized powers in world football. And when it comes to the leading powers at the club level, 2009 was clearly Barcelona‟s year. NHRA Drag Racing screams into April with continuing coverage on ESPN Continuing this month on ESPN is more supercharged action from NHRA Drag Racing. At heart, drag racing is merely an acceleration contest, but what acceleration. Top Fuel dragsters, often referred to as the “kings of the sport,” can cover a quarter-mile in 4.4 seconds at more than 330 mph, while the Funny Cars routinely run in the 4.7-second range and are capable hitting the same speeds as the Top Fuel dragsters. Race action this month airs from Houston and Las Vegas, two stops where Top Fuel star Tony Schumacher ruled last season, winning both races on his way to claiming a sixth consecutive title. ESPN’s Poker Night continues on Sunday and Tuesday evenings

ESPN’s Poker Night, featured every Sunday and Tuesday evening, spotlights skilled international card sharps as they ply their trade at leading events around the globe. From the prestigious World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas to the U.S. Poker Championship, the World Series of Poker–Europe and other major international events, ESPN‟s Poker Night delivers all the high-stakes action that poker fans crave. The 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP), the marquee event in world poker, continues re-airing this month on ESPN with action from the Main Event, 13 days of World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold’em that delivered the players for the Final Table. While seven-time gold bracelet winner Phil Ivey, widely considered one of the world‟s best poker players, earned his place at the final table, in the end it was a 21-year-old Michigan poker player, Joe Cada, waltzing off with the $8.55 million top prize while becoming the youngest player to win the tournament in its 40-year history. Using interviews, film & television reports and historical photo collections, this unique series brings these fascinating men fully to life. This month features Pakistan‟s Wasim Akram, England‟s Sir Leonard Hutton, West Indies‟ talents Sir Frank Worrell and George Headley, and Greg Chappell, a former Australia captain considered the pre-eminent Australian batsman of his time.
