Match backgroundHolding a 3-0 lead after a dominant first-leg display in London, Bayern München have one foot in the UEFAChampions League quarter-finals again as Chelsea come to Germany.

• After a goalless first half at Stamford Bridge on 25 February, Bayern's Serge Gnabry struck twice in four minutesearly in the second period, taking his career total to six UEFA Champions League goals – all scored in London thisseason. Robert Lewandowski tapped in a third 14 minutes from time – his 64th goal in the competition and 11th thisterm – to inflict Chelsea's biggest home defeat in UEFA competition, the Blues also losing Marcos Alonso to a late redcard.

• Chelsea's last three UEFA Champions League campaigns have all ended in the round of 16, while Bayern wereknocked out by English opposition at this stage last season, going down to eventual winners Liverpool – their earliestexit from the competition since 2011.

Previous meetings• Current manager Frank Lampard captained the Chelsea side that defeated Bayern on penalties in the 2012 final atthe German club's own stadium in Munich – although Bayern enjoyed a measure of revenge in the UEFA Super Cupthe following season.

• In the 2012 UEFA Champions League final, Thomas Müller's 83rd-minute header had seemingly given JuppHeynckes' Bayern victory at their Fußball Arena München home, but five minutes later Didier Drogba headed anequaliser for a Chelsea team managed by Roberto Di Matteo. Former Blues winger Arjen Robben had an extra-timepenalty saved by Petr Čech and there was more spot-kick misery for Bayern in the shoot-out, despite Juan Mata'smiss. Čech saved from Ivica Olić and Bastian Schweinsteiger, leaving Drogba to convert the decisive kick and giveChelsea a 4-3 penalty triumph. Lampard scored Chelsea's third kick with Manuel Neuer converting from the spot forBayern, for whom Jérôme Boateng played 120 minutes.

• Bayern were victorious in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup between the teams, at the Eden Arena in Prague. A Bayernside coached by Josep Guardiola twice came from behind, Franck Ribéry (47) and Javi Martínez (120+1) cancellingout goals from Fernando Torres (8) and Eden Hazard (93) to force another penalty shoot-out against José Mourinho'sChelsea. Bayern ran out 5-4 winners on spot kicks with Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku having the tenth penalty of theshoot-out saved by Neuer. David Alaba scored Bayern's first kick; Lampard again converted Chelsea's third.

• Bayern and Chelsea first met in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, Mourinho's Blues prevailing 6-5 on aggregate against Felix Magath's Bayern. Chelsea won the first leg 4-2 at home, Lampard scoring twice and alsofinding the target in the second leg as Bayern won 3-2 on the night but went out on aggregate.

Form guideBayern• Bayern became only the seventh team – and first from Germany – to win all six games in the UEFA ChampionsLeague group stage this season, opening their campaign with a 3-0 win at home to Crvena zvezda before a 7-2 win atTottenham in which Gnabry scored four goals. Olympiacos were then beaten away (3-2) and home (2-0), the latterresult securing their place in the round of 16 with two games to spare, before a 6-0 victory at Crvena zvezda onMatchday 5 guaranteed first place in the section. Bayern rounded off a perfect group campaign with a 3-1 win againstSpurs in Munich.

• Lewandowski scored in Bayern's first five group games and is the top scorer in this season's UEFA ChampionsLeague with 11 goals.

• Bayern were the only side to collect maximum points in this season's group stage, and finished as top scorers with24 goals – one short of Paris Saint-Germain's competition record, set in 2017/18.

• Bayern's round of 16 record is W11 L4. They had won seven ties in a row before losing to another English club,Liverpool, last season (0-0 a, 1-3 h). It was their earliest exit from the competition since an away-goals defeat at thehands of Internazionale in 2010/11. They have reached the knockout phase in each of the past 12 seasons.

• Bayern have lost three of their last five home matches in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage, including thelast two – against Liverpool last season and Real Madrid in the 2017/18 semi-final first leg (1-2).

• Despite three victories this season, Bayern have won only five of their last nine UEFA Champions League matchesin Munich (D2 L2).

• This is Bayern's 23rd UEFA Champions League campaign, fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 24).They have now won their section 16 times.

• Champions of Germany for a record 30th time in 2019/20 – with a landmark eighth successive Bundesliga title –Bayern had reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals or better in seven successive campaigns before

They drew their next two games, coming backfrom 4-1 down to draw 4-4 with nine-man Ajax before a 2-2 draw at Valencia on Matchday 5, but made sure of aknockout place with a 2-1 win at home to LOSC. They finished level with Valencia on 11 points but behind theSpanish side on head-to-head record.

• The Matchday 5 draw at Valencia extended Chelsea's unbeaten run in European away matches to ten (W7 D3).

Head coachHans-Dieter FlickDate of birth: 24 February 1965Nationality: GermanPlaying career: Sandhausen, Bayern, KölnCoaching career: Bammental, Hoffenheim, Salzburg (assistant), Germany (assistant), Bayern (assistant, caretaker)

• As a player, Flick's outstanding performances in the lower leagues earned him a Bayern contract at the age of 20.An industrious midfielder who was more valued as a team player rather than a goalscorer, he went on to make over100 appearances in Munich before departing for Köln, where a series of injuries forced him to retire aged just 28.

• Flick's first coaching assignment led him to Hoffenheim when they were still in the fourth division, leading them topromotion in 2000/01. He then had a short spell as Giovanni Trapattoni's assistant at Salzburg, until Joachim Löwasked him to be his right-hand man for Germany's national team in summer 2006.

• His work for Die Mannschaft went well beyond the pitch, as Flick invested a considerable amount of time in settingup databases and technical information about players and their training development. This initiative led to a switch tothe role of sporting director following the FIFA World Cup victory in 2014.

• Departed that role in January 2017, returning to Hoffenheim as CEO, but only stayed for a few months.

• At the beginning of 2019/20, Flick joined Niko Kovač's coaching team back at Bayern and, following the Croatian'sdeparture on 3 November, took charge of the team on an interim basis.

Frank LampardDate of birth: 20 June 1978Nationality: EnglishPlaying career: West Ham, Swansea (loan), Chelsea, Manchester City, New York CityCoaching career: Derby, Chelsea

• The son of former West Ham left-back Frank Lampard Sr, he started his career with the Hammers as an apprenticeand had a short spell on loan at Swansea before making his debut for the east London outfit. Moved across London tojoin Chelsea in 2001.

• A key figure in Chelsea's back-to-back title wins in 2004/05 and 2005/06, he equalised in the 2008 UEFA ChampionsLeague final defeat against Manchester United and scored the winner in the 2009 FA Cup decider versus Everton.

• Played a key role in Chelsea's remarkable 2012 UEFA Champions League success by converting penalties insuccessive rounds against Napoli and Benfica and another in the final shoot-out win against Bayern München.Surpassed Bobby Tambling's club record of 202 goals with a second-half double against Aston Villa in May 2013 andcaptained Chelsea to UEFA Europa League glory at the expense of Benfica in Amsterdam four days later.

• First capped by England in 1999, he scored three times at UEFA EURO 2004, his first major tournament; alsofeatured at the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and 2010, plus UEFA EURO 2012, before retiring from international footballafter the 2014 World Cup having scored 29 goals in 106 England appearances, including a record nine penalties.

• Ended a 13-year playing association with Chelsea in 2014, going on to spend a year with both Manchester City andNew York City before announcing his retirement in February 2017. Appointed Derby manager in May 2018, he tookthe club to the Championship play-off final in his sole season in charge; returned to Stamford Bridge as manager inJuly 2019 to succeed Maurizio Sarri, his Chelsea side losing on penalties to Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup inLampard's second match in charge.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League: Did you know?Overall records• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with ACMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successivetitles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

Knockout stage• Real Madrid have qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase a record 24 times, including 23 insuccession. They have also played a competition-high 97 knockout phase matches – ahead of Bayern München (92)and Barcelona (91).

• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 49 times, including six in 2018/19 – a competition record for asingle season – and Paris Saint-Germain in this season's round of 16..

• Before last season, only twice – Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Internazionale'svictory against Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 – had a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. However, Ajaxagain (against Real Madrid) and Manchester United (against Paris Saint-Germain) both achieved the feat in the2018/19 round of 16 before Tottenham (against Ajax) did likewise in the semi-finals.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by Barcelona against Paris in the 2016/17 last 16,when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previous record held byDeportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home; Romaequalled that margin in the 2017/18 quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelona with a 3-0 homesuccess, while in the 2018/19 semi-finals Liverpool lost 3-0 in the first leg at Barcelona but went through after a 4-0home victory.

• Thirty-three ties have been decided on away goals, including 13 where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Bayernand Monaco have benefited from the away goals rule five times – more than any other club – whereas Internazionalehave been eliminated by that method a record four times.

• In all, 30 ties have required extra time. Fourteen have been settled by extra time alone: six round of 16 encountersincluding Atlético-Liverpool in 2019/20, five quarter-finals, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool, andthe 2013/14 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. Bayern, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have all appearedin three shoot-outs, sharing the competition record, with Bayern, Atlético and Liverpool having won the most (twoapiece).

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Atlético Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs. Thirteenhave finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid's defeat of Manchester City in the 2015/16 semi-finals.

• Liverpool (versus Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling theknockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at Schalke in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0success at Sporting CP in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16.

• Bayern eventually beat Sporting by a record aggregate margin of 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; thattie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie until it wasequalled by Liverpool's 7-6 aggregate win against Roma in the 2017/18 semi-final.

• Bayern and Manchester City jointly hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions Leagueknockout match. Bayern beat both Basel (2011/12) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 secondleg, while City beat Schalke by the same scoreline at the same stage of the 2018/19 competition.

• A record five clubs from England participated in the 2017/18 knockout phase. Including 2019/20, England has alsoprovided four clubs on eight other occasions – as has Spain five times and Germany twice. England is the only nation

to have provided four quarter-finalists in a season, 2018/19 being the third occasion after 2007/08 and 2008/09.
