Match backgroundSevilla FC have never won a UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie and could find improving on that record a tallorder against Manchester United FC.

• The Spanish side finished second in Group E and, with Vincenzo Montella having replaced Eduardo Berizzo ascoach in December, will now look to make it through to the quarter-finals at the fourth attempt.

• Manchester United, the Group A winners, are at this stage for the first time since 2013/14 but have plenty of causefor confidence having lost only once in their last eight visits to Spain.

Match backgroundSevilla• The Spanish side have lost all three of their previous round of 16 ties. In 200708 they were beaten 3-2 on penaltiesby Fenerbahçe SK after a 5-5 aggregate draw (2-3 away, 3-2 home); two years later they lost 3-2 over two legsagainst PFC CSKA Moskva (1-1 away, 1-2 home) and they lost 3-2 to Leicester City FC 12 months ago (2-1 home, 0-2 away).

• Sevilla picked up seven points at home in Group E. A Wissam Ben Yedder hat-trick secured a 3-0 victory over NKMaribor on matchday two before FC Spartak Moskva were beaten 2-1. That record looked under threat whenLiverpool FC raced into a three-goal half-time lead on matchday five, but Sevilla staged a remarkable fightback tosnatch a 3-3 draw.

• The Spanish club have won six of their last nine European home matches, losing one and drawing the other two, against Liverpool and İstanbul Başakşehir in this season's play-offs (2-2).

• Sevilla suffered their first, and only, home loss to English visitors when succumbing 3-1 to Manchester City FC in the2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage. They were 2-1 winners against Leicester in last season's round of 16first leg, but bowed out after going down 2-0 away.

• The Andalusian club's record at home to English teams is W3 D1 L1.

• Sevilla's record in two-legged knockout ties against Premier League sides is W1 L1. Aside from last season's defeatby Leicester, they beat Tottenham Hotspur FC 4-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of their victorious 2006/07 UEFACup campaign (2-1 home, 2-2 away).

Manchester United• This is the English club's tenth round of 16 tie (W6 L3), and their first since facing Olympiacos FC in 2013/14 (0-2away, 3-0 home). Having lost their first two last-16 contests, United have won all but one of the most recent seven.

• The Manchester outfit have won only two of their nine away games at this stage (D4 L3).

• United's record in two-legged ties against Spanish clubs is W6 L7.

• This is United's eighth European match this term and their second against Spanish opposition, their campaignhaving started with a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid CF in the UEFA Super Cup in Skopje on 8 August. That ended United's11-game unbeaten run (W8 D3) since a 2-1 reversal at Fenerbahçe SK on matchday four of last season's UEFAEuropa League. The defeat in Istanbul had been their fifth in nine European fixtures.

• The Red Devils won all but one of their six Group A games; away from home they beat CSKA Moskva 4-1 onmatchday two before a 1-0 success at SL Benfica in the third round of fixtures. The sole blemish was their 1-0matchday five reverse at FC Basel 1893.

• Those losses to Madrid and Basel are United's only reverses in their last 18 European matches, home and away(W13 D3). The Basel loss ended a seven-game unbeaten European away record (W5 D2) since that setback atFenerbahçe.

• José Mourinho's side got the better of Spanish opposition in last season's UEFA Europa League semi-finals, winning1-0 at RC Celta de Vigo in the first leg thanks to a Marcus Rashford free-kick. They went through 2-1 on aggregatewith a 1-1 home draw, Marouane Fellaini scoring for United.

• That UEFA Super Cup defeat by Madrid means United have now won two of their last 11 matches against Spanishclubs, with four draws and five defeats in that time. The Red Devils have also won five of their last 22 matches withLiga opposition (D9 L8).

• United have played 50 times against Liga clubs, with the record W13 D20 L17. Away their record is W3 D10 L10.

• United have contested three finals with Spanish sides – all against FC Barcelona. They were 2-1 winners in the1990/91 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Rotterdam but lost 2-0 in 2008/09 in Rome and 3-1 in London in2010/11, both in the UEFA Champions League.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 40 times, including FC Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund,Leicester City FC and AS Monaco FC in the 2016/17 round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FCin the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's victory against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won4-0 at home.

• Twenty-eight ties have been decided on away goals, including nine where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 28 ties have required extra time. Twelve have been settled by extra time alone: five round of 16 encounters, five quarter-finals including Real Madrid CF-FC Bayern München in 2016/17, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelseaand Liverpool FC, and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Liverpool FC won 5-0 at FC Porto in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling the knockout phase record for the biggestfirst-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at FC Schalke 04 in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube dePortugal in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16. Bayern eventually went through 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the homesecond leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, withMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently CristianoRonaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsinghis own mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), FilippoInzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick against Manchester City FC on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in thecompetition, a record Ronaldo matched against Club Atlético de Madrid in the 2016/17 semi-finals.

• SS Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete at this level, having been aged 43 years and 252
