Head coachJorge SampaoliDate of birth: 13 March 1960Nationality: Argentinian Playing career: Newell's Old BoysCoaching career: Juan Aurich, Sport Boys, Coronel Bolognesi, Sporting Cristal, O'Higgins, Emelec, Universidad deChile, Chile, Sevilla

• Jorge Sampaoli's career as a promising midfielder was cut short as a double leg fracture forced him to quit playing atthe age of 19. He turned to coaching, working with local amateur sides and gaining notoriety after being photographedshouting instructions at his team from up a tree having been refused entry to the ground.

• Following a spell coaching Argentina de Rosario, the reserve team of former club Newell's, his first professional jobcame in Peru in 2002 with Juan Aurich. He remained in Peru with Sport Boys before leading Coronel Bolognesi intotheir first international tournament – the Copa Sudamericana – in 2006.

• After a disappointing year at Sporting Cristal, Sampaoli left Peru to reinvigorate his career with O'Higgins in Chile, spending three years with the Rancagua outfit. He spent time with Emelec in Ecuador but it was a 2011 move toUniversidad de Chile that established his name.

• It was here where the Argentinian cemented his reputation as one of South America's best coaches. His attacking, attractive style brought back-to-back league titles in addition to the Copa Sudamericana, and he also reached thesemi-finals of the Copa Libertadores.

• Appointed Chile manager in 2012 and continued to impose his aesthetically-pleasing style at the highest level.Helped knock Spain out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup group stage before succumbing to Brazil on penalties in theround of 16. He led the Roja to their first piece of silverware 12 months later with a Copa América final victory over hisnative Argentina. Left shortly afterwards and appointed Sevilla coach in summer 2016, coming within seconds ofwinning the UEFA Super Cup on his competitive debut only to be denied by Real Madrid.

Claudio RanieriDate of birth: 20 October 1951Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: AS Roma, US Catanzaro, Calcio Catania, US Città di PalermoCoaching career: Vigor Lamezia Calcio, Campania Puteolana, Cagliari Calcio, SSC Napoli, ACF Fiorentina, ValenciaCF (twice), Club Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, Parma FC, Juventus, AS Roma, FC Internazionale Milano, ASMonaco FC, Greece, Leicester City FC

• Ranieri played just six Serie A games for hometown club Roma before moving south to spend the remainder of hisplaying career with Catanzaro, Palermo and Catania.

• Coached several lower-league teams before making his name with Cagliari, leading the Sardinian club from SerieC1 to Serie A between 1989 and 1991. Moved to Napoli, guiding the club to fourth place in the top flight in 1991/92only to be sacked the following season.

• Earned promotion to Serie A in his first season as Fiorentina coach, and won the Coppa Italia in 1996 beforeheading abroad. Won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 1999 and then coached Atlético and Chelsea, whom he ledto a second-place Premier League finish and the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2003/04.

• Replaced by José Mourinho, a brief, unsuccessful, spell back at Valencia – the highlight a UEFA Super Cup winagainst FC Porto – followed before Ranieri rediscovered his touch in saving Parma from relegation in 2007. That ledto a stint at Juventus, who dismissed him in May 2009. Ranieri rejoined his first club, Roma, four months later, leadingthe club to second place in Serie A in his first season before leaving in February 2011 only to return to coaching sevenmonths later, signing a two-year contract with Inter.

• Left Inter in March 2012 and then had two seasons with Monaco – guiding them back to Ligue 1 and then to secondspot in the top flight – before succeeding Fernando Santos at the Greece helm after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Hisshort spell in charge proved unsuccessful but Ranieri was still appointed by Leicester in summer 2015 and, remarkably, led the 5,000-1 outsiders to a stunning Premier League title win in his debut season – Ranieri's firstleague championship.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 36 times, including Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético deMadrid in the 2015/16 quarter-finals. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finalsand FC Internazionale Milano's victory against Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after ahome first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-seven ties have been decided on away goals, including eight where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 27 ties have required extra time. Eleven have been settled by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, five round of16 encounters – including Bayern-Juventus in 2015/16 – the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool FC,and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Real Madrid won 6-1 at FC Schalke 04 in the 2013/14 round of 16, equalling the knockout phase record for thebiggest first-leg lead – Bayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 round of 16. Bayerneventually went through 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over itstwo legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy, with Milan (1989, 1990) the last club topick up consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997)and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently CristianoRonaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing hisown mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17;Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03)managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in the competition – two more thanRonaldo.

• SS Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete at this level, having been aged 43 years and 252days when he figured against Madrid on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition.

• Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in AS Roma's 1-1 drawat PFC CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years and 290 days) was the previous record holder.
