All of us in Southern Arizona are so fortunate to be able to experience the world-class artists and performances from UApresents – rich and diverse programming that

rivals the fi nest performing arts programs in the U.S. This cultural and educational asset remains accessible to most in our community while also continuing to offer favorable pricing for seniors, members of the military, groups, UA faculty & staff and students throughout the community. Most especially, I am proud to have UApresents as an integral facet of the comprehensive University of Arizona experience.

This promises to be another record season for UApresents. Despite deep cuts to state funding, UApresents continues to operate responsibly, generating positive year-end results for three consecutive seasons.

I know there are many University units competing for your attention and I’m grateful to the individuals and businesses that generously support UApresents with sponsorships and donations. With the community’s continued support, the University will do all it can to ensure this valuable asset is not lost.

W elcome to UApresents’ 2010-2011 Season! From classical, dance, jazz and world music to family programming, spectacular events and Broadway – it’s all at

UApresents this season.

We are thrilled that the most popular Broadway musical ever, WICKED, will be at Centennial Hall for a three-week run in January. UApresents and Broadway in Tucson have partnered to make this possible.

Our season opens with a festive celebración of Mexico’s two hundred years of independence with Mariachi Sol de México and Vikki Carr. We are proud to host three American dance masters – Paul Taylor, Martha Graham and a very special farewell performance by the legendary Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Two ‘Special Events,’ Blue Man Group and Cirque Dreams, will be here with exciting new productions and ‘Family Fun’ with “Choo-Choo Soul with Genevieve!” from Playhouse Disney will delight. The tradition of excellence continues with some of the fi nest performers in each of our core genres including Joshua Bell, Liza Minnelli, Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, KODO and the electrifying Noche Flamenca. From all of us at UApresents, thank you for your support. The world-class artists and extraordinary performances that comprise this season stand fi rmly among the fi nest arts presenters in the nation and your generosity is crucial to maintain this high quality programming for our community. Ticket sales account for just over half of our cost to host these great performances and cuts to state funding support for education have deeply impacted UApresents. The support of individual and corporate sponsors, grants and donations are needed more than ever before to fund the balance. Please consider a gift in any amount to help us continue to host the artists and performances that will captivate your imagination, inspire you and enrich your life.

I look forward to seeing you at Centennial Hall!

SO MUCH HAPPENED BEFORE DOROTHY DROPPED IN. Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fi ery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete – and completely satisfying – new musical in a long time” (USA Today). On Broadway and around the world, WICKED has worked its magic on critics and audiences alike. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” and “the defi ning musical of the decade” (The New York Times).

Celebrate the bicentennial of the Mexican Día de la Independencia! Carr’s energy and style are as radiant and irresistible as her extraordinary voice. Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Elvis Presley all named her among their favorite female singers of all time. Born Florencia Bisenta de Casillas Martínez Cardona, she is approaching the fi fth decade of a career that includes more than 60 records and three Grammy awards for her Spanish-language albums. Maestro José Hernández, a proud fi fth-generation mariachi recognized as one of the top 100 most infl uential Latinos in America by Hispanic Magazine, set a new standard for the genre with his Mariachi Sol de México. Offering traditional mariachi sounds embellished with fresh contemporary passion and powerful rhythms, they are the fi rst and only mariachi group to perform in China and North Korea, the fi rst mariachi group to be nominated for a Latin Grammy and have toured the world playing with some of the most respected recording artists, including Juan Gabriel and Luis Miguel.

His playing “does nothing less than tell human beings why they bother to be alive,” declares Interview Magazine. For more than two decades, Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty. He came to national attention at the age of 14 in a highly acclaimed orchestral debut and today he’s equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra leader. His restless curiosity has taken him in new directions that have earned him the rare title “classical music superstar.” The Boston Herald simply proclaims him “the greatest American violinist active today.”

VIVALDI Le Quattro Staggioni, Op. 8 “The Four Seasons”GLASS Violin Concerto No. 2 “The American Four Seasons”

Magical, hauntingly beautiful and soaring, capped with plenty of violin pyrotechnics and an ending that violin soloist McDuffi e says “goes like a bat out of hell.” “The American Four Seasons” is only the second violin concerto by the prolifi c Philip Glass, whom Rolling Stone has called “the best-known living classical composer on the planet.” The piece, written specifi cally for McDuffi e, premiered in December, 2009 and the Toronto Star wrote it was “one of the most exciting musical evenings of the year.” McDuffi e and the Orchestra pair the new work with their unique interpretation of its inspiration, Vivaldi’s cherished “The Four Seasons.” The Orchestra, one of Europe’s premier ensembles, will perform the Vivaldi on baroque-era instruments.

MOZART Clarinet Concerto, K. 622BRAHMS Sonata No. 2 for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 120MOZART Piano Concerto No. 17, K. 453

The world’s foremost clarinetist, two-time Grammy-winner Stoltzman brought the clarinet to the forefront as a solo instrument. His virtuosity, technique and imagination revolutionized the world of clarinet playing. The New York Times extols his “impeccable musicianship,” asking, “If Mr. Stoltzman is not one of a kind, who might the others be?” Pianist Pressler is among the world’s most distinguished and honored musicians with a career spanning over fi ve decades. Pressler, whose life has always been dedicated to music, escaped Nazi Germany with his family and learned piano in Israel as a youth. Los Angeles Times applauds his “joyous pianism – technically faultless, stylistically impeccable, emotionally irrepressible… from another age and a virtually forgotten sensibility.” Acclaimed as an outstanding ensemble of distinguished virtuosi, performing widely diverse repertoire in creatively programmed concerts, the New York Chamber Soloists have maintained a unique niche in the chamber music world for nearly fi ve decades.

Selected from the foremost-recorded chamber orchestra in the world, this ensemble plays with extraordinary cohesion and discipline. First violinist and guest leader Andrew Watkinson has led or directed almost all of London’s chamber orchestras, and served 15 years as director with the City of London Sinfonia. Watkinson inspires instinctive musicianship from the players, a technique that keeps them exceptionally aware of their interdependence. The Scotsman writes, “...this band operates like a pack of wolves… the impact of the ensemble was breathtaking, a riveting like-mindedness, laced with spectacular displays of inspired individuality.”

The Seattle Times calls their work, “Thought-provoking, ear-opening and just plain beautiful.” The Quartet moves gracefully among the classical, jazz and rock repertoires. Violinist and founder Dave Harrington says, “I’ve always wanted the string quartet to be vital, and energetic, and alive, and cool, and to be absolutely beautiful and ugly if it has to be. But it has to be expressive of life. To tell the story with grace and humor and depth.” Kronos Quartet has pursued that artistic vision for more than 30 years, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 45 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, collaborating with many of the world’s most eclectic composers and performers and commissioning more than 650 new works and arrangements.

Now in her fi fth decade as an internationally celebrated entertainer, she is one of only eight living artists to have won every major show business honor including an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and four Tony Awards. The evening will feature beloved American standards performed in their purest, most intimate form with Liza, her long-time accompanist, Billy Stritch and a quartet. Dubbed “The Last Leading Man” by The New York Times, Mitchell is the quintessential musical theatre performer. At home on the Broadway stage, the Tony Award-winning actor has held leads in Kiss Me, Kate, Man of La Mancha and Ragtime, and is equally at home in concert settings from Feinstein’s to Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl. His musical versatility and thrilling voice make for an instrument that The New York Times says “rumbles out of him like thunder underlined by drum rolls.” Variety calls his voice, “a richly tailored, warm and resonant instrument, capable of caressing the kind of melody that has staying power.” The New York Times adds, “It is no exaggeration to say that Brian Stokes Mitchell is right now in a class by himself as a Broadway leading man. No other actor can match his singing voice. No other singer can claim his acting range or experience.” Mr. Mitchell will be appearing with his four-piece band.

Back by demand! Appearing on stage with a stool, a microphone and a can of diet soda, she is known for her razor-sharp wit and spontaneity. This self-deprecating, comedic genius with lightning-fast timing engages members of the audience in dialog so hilarious it’s hard to believe it wasn’t rehearsed. Ever topical and up-to-the-minute, she treats even the news from Washington so artfully it draws laughter from both sides of the aisle. Glover’s hit show, Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk, fundamentally altered the tap landscape when it burst onto Broadway in 1996. Glover was just out of his teens when Noise/Funk established its star as a household name – for many, the only name in tap. In this new program, Glover goes toe-to-toe with fl amenco’s raw passion, pounding out rhythms with blinding speed. The New York Times says of his performance, “his strength doesn’t stop at his feet… with his trademark dreadlocks fl ying, it pumps through his body, radiating out like an electrical force.”

At age 79, Taylor is the sole survivor of the universally recognized great 20th century choreographers. His company returns to Tucson with a new program of physically joyful creations including “Beloved Renegade.” Taylor’s genius lies in celebrating the simple moves of life, gestures and stances from the street, everyday moves that in themselves are full of grace and beauty. The New York Times wrote, “There is no other choreographer today whose imaginative range looks so large or so multilayered.” Taylor and his company have been advancing modern dance for 55 years – his bold inventiveness, his dancers’ disciplined lyricism and the all-American brio of his choreography inspired the San Francisco Chronicle to cheer, “The American spirit soars whenever Taylor’s dancers dance.”

This will be one of the fi nal performances of this iconoclastic company, one of the most infl uential dance companies of its era. On New Year’s Eve, 2011, the Company will close, according to Cunningham’s explicit design, a legacy plan to guide his company and ensure the preservation of his artistic legacy. Reviving key works from Cunningham’s repertory, the program will feature the last dancers he personally trained. Cunningham, who died in July, 2009, was a leader of the American avant-garde throughout his 70-year career and is considered one of the most important choreographers of our time. His Company forged a distinctive style, refl ecting his technique and illuminating the near limitless possibility for human movement. Mikhail Baryshnikov has said, “Merce Cunningham reinvented dance, and then waited for the audience…. The elegance, simplicity and force of his work are unique – and undeniable… he has taught us something new and powerful about how to dance and how to live.”

Bursting with dazzling creativity and heightened physicality, he is “one of America’s most surprising talents” (The New York Times). Since his work debuted with the Houston Ballet in 1990 when he was just 20, McIntyre has created more than 75 contemporary ballets for American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Stuttgart Ballet and other illustrious companies. The Project premiered in 2004 as a

summer company with a hand-selected group of America’s most talented ballet dancers. They immediately won over the hearts

of audiences and critics alike at the major summer festivals including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and Wolf Trap. Using classical ballet as the point of departure, McIntyre creates emotionally charged dances that defy categorization, set to musical scores ranging from Beethoven and Henry Cowell to Beck, The Beatles and Ralph Stanley. She came decisively into her own in the 1940s, turning out in rapid succession a decade-long series of

potent dance dramas. She continued dancing until the age of 74 and choreographed well into her ‘90s. Her repertoire of an astounding 181 works puts her on par with Picasso, Stravinsky and Frank Lloyd Wright as one of the 20th century’s seminal artistic forces. Her dance company, the oldest and most celebrated in the world, is a training ground for dance’s most illustrious performers. Now led by Artistic Director Janet Eilber, who worked closely with Graham for more than a decade,

the Company continues to fi nd its inspiration for movement in the vast American tapestry. The

Miles Davis’ landmark album, Kind of Blue, remains the best-selling jazz recording – ever. Legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb is the only surviving member of those historic recording sessions and he keeps the legacy alive on tour with his So What Band. Cobb is internationally renowned as a band leader, accompanist and solo artist and is a winner of the 2009 NEA Jazz Masters Award. Kind of Blue stunned the jazz world in 1959, creating a new language of music. Considered to be one of the best albums of all time, of any genre, NPR calls it “a universally acknowledged masterpiece, revered as much by rock and classical music fans as by jazz lovers.”

Boasting a direct lineage from the earliest incarnations of New Orleans jazz, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band proudly carries on the traditions passed forward from the most prolifi c jazz heritage on earth. The Del McCoury Band, the most honored group in bluegrass history, performs original and traditional compositions with eloquent harmonies and, according to USA Today, “ferocious, purebred musicianship.” Together in concert, these groups create a blend of soul-lifting harmonies as the high and lonesome sound of the Appalachians meets the hot and lively jazz of New Orleans.

The Orchestra, 15 of today’s fi nest jazz soloists and ensemble players, has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1992. Remarkably versatile, they are featured in all aspects of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming. Marsalis, the man Rolling Stone calls “potentially the greatest trumpeter of all time,” is also hailed as a creative genius, compassionate humanitarian, legendary trumpeter, masterful composer, arts advocate, tireless educator and cultural leader. As Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, he is an evangelist for this uniquely American-born music – he intends for it to be not only accessible, but enjoyable. “We’re playing this music for you,” he says. “If we wanted to play it for ourselves we could stay home.”

Recognized as the world’s most authentic fl amenco touring company, Martín Santangelo, his BESSIE award-winning wife, Soledad Barrio, and their company, manifest the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms. With dancers and musicians drawn from the region where fl amenco is the inheritance of each new generation, their performances are transcendent and deeply emotional. The New York Times heralds Barrio as a paragon of dance – “no current ballet dancer in the world is as marvelous as she.”

Musician, dancer, anthropologist, singer, songwriter, academic, activist and French knight – all describe him, but none captures the energy and passion of the man who has become one of South Africa’s greatest musical exports. He has campaigned against the injustice of apartheid and has been instrumental in putting the new South Africa on the map. Born in England, raised in Africa, Clegg found teachers and advocates among Zulu musicians and performed and recorded with them before such collaborations were legal. The New York Times says, Clegg “has refi ned a sophisticated international style of pop that blends Zulu guitar and African percussion with Anglo-American pop.” Known for his energetic stage performances, he entertains and enlightens with amusing anecdotes, historical bits and pieces and anthropological facts.

THE JOHNNY CLEGG BANDFriday, May 6, 2011 at 8pmTickets: $38, $28, $18Students/Faculty & Staff: $38, $25, $15Event Sponsors: Maria & Tom Tilton

Founded in 1927 by bassist and songwriter Ignacio Piñeiro, they performed at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. For more than 80 years the group has performed in more than 35 nations around the world. Now composed of a fourth generation of musicians, their exceptional musicianship and artistry is fi rmly rooted in the musical explosion of Cuban son that took place during the 1920s and ‘30s, evoking the nostalgic elegance of the ballrooms and dance clubs of the era. Piñeiro’s innovation was to add trumpet to the guitars, percussion and voices of previous son groups and he may well have named salsa music with his song “Échale Salsita,” (‘throw a little sauce on it”). Of this, their fi rst U.S. tour since FDR was in offi ce, The Miami Herald said, “this ensemble played with exceptional precision and drive.”

Education is a critical focus of UApresents’ mission. Despite continued challenges to funding for education in Arizona, UApresents remains committed to providing opportunities for K-12 students throughout our community.

UApresents once again will take renowned artists directly to our local schools. Last season, in collaboration with the Tucson Unifi ed School District, our ‘In the Schools’ program brought Latin American music duo Calle Sur, contemporary dance company Northwest Professional Dance Project and science educator and performer Garry Krinksy to thousands of area students.

With the generous support of our donors, UApresents will continue to offer master classes and workshops with professional artists forK-12 and UA college students, as well as deeply discounted tickets to ensure that children and families from underserved communities are able to attend UApresents events – for many, their fi rst live performing arts experience. In addition, we regularly offer complimentary tickets to students in various University departments throughout the year.

New this season, UApresents will launch the Student Critic Program.

University and K-12 students will attend performances and write reviews which will be posted online. The goal of this program is to engage students more directly in the performances and help them gain critical thinking and writing skills.

Watch our website, uapresents.org, for updates and details on all of this season’s education programming.

It was both entertaining and informative…a perfect school outing!– C. V., Davis Bilingual Elementary
