Klein Erin Bout (2) en haar broer, Kyle(12), is meer as ’n week gelede tragies in ’nmotorongeluk op Hindleweg, Silversandsoorlede. Dit volg nadat ’n taxi reg van voor

met ’n ligrooi Toyota Corolla, waarin diekinders saammet hul ouers gery het, gebotshet. Erin is op die toneel dood verklaar.

Kyle is enkele ure daarna op die operasie-tafel by die Tygerberg-hospitaal oorlede, hetsy oom, Tony Hendricks, dié week aan Ty-gerBurger by die gesin se twee-vertrekhuisinMagdastraat, Kalkfontein vertel. Kyle heterge borsbeserings opgedoen en sy skedelwas ook gekraak.

Die taxi-bestuurder, sy geldwag en driepassasiers – ’n man, vrou en kind – is lig be-seer.

Sedert die tragiese voorval is die naasbe-staandes van die oorledenes hard besig omgeld bymekaar te skraap vir die dubbele be-grafnis – iets wat volgens familie byna onbe-kostigbaar is.

Naasbestaandes van die kinders was hier-die week besig om eet- en drinkgoed virtroosbesoekers voor te berei.

“Almal bring goed en gee geld. Hier wasvan die mense wat met ’n donasielys deurdie gebied gestap het om geld in te samel,”het die oom vertel.

Die kinders word eerskomende Saterdagbegrawe.

“Soos die geld inkom, so maak ons maardie reëlings.”

Volgens Tony het die taxi-eienaar wie sebestuurder en geldwag in die ongeluk be-trokke was, aangebied om ’n bus vir die dagbeskikbaar te stel.

Drie minute. Dít is hoe lank dit vier ver-meende rowers geneem het om perso-neel by ’n vulstasie in Kuilsrivier van

duisende rande te beroof én gyselaar te hou.Die “professionele” rowers het die afgelo-

pe naweek by die Engen-vulstasie naby dieSoneike-winkelsentrum toegeslaan. Hierhet hulle personeellede met vuurwapens ge-dreig, by ’n kantoor ingedwing en kontant,sowel asmense se persoonlike besittings, ge-roof.

Die groep het Sondag om 06:09 by die vul-stasie ingestap en is om 06:12 weer daar uit,het die bestuurder, Petro Liebenberg, aanTygerBurger vertel.

“Hulle weet wat hulle doen; hulle was baieprofessioneel,” het sy gesê.

Sy vermoed die groep is deel van ’n sindi-kaat.

Ondanks die groot bedrag kontant, sowatR43 000, en besittings wat gebuit is, is die be-stuurder verlig dat niemand tydens die drieminuut lange pynlike ervaring beseer is nie.

Toe ditoop was, het hulle ons by die kombuis inge-dwing. Die klant het toe ’n kans gevat en uit-gehardloop,maar hy is by die deur vasgekeeren teruggedwing.” Die rowers het kort daar-na in ’n blou Mazda-bakkie op die vlug ge-slaan.

Charl du Toit, sekerheidsbeampte by SJCGuarding Services, het gesê hulle was kortná die voorval op die toneel. “Ons het voer-tuie uitgestuur in die rigting wat ons ge-dink het hulle gevlug het. Ons het al onsvoertuie laat kom – vyf altesaam. Ons hetnahulle gesoek,maarkonhulle nie opspoornie,” het hy gesê. Die registrasienommervandie bakkie, volgensDuToit,was ookon-duidelik op die kringtelevisie-beeldmateri-aal. Volgens die ooggetuies was die rowersgewapen met 9 mm-pistole. ’n Saak van ge-wapende roof word ondersoek. The Kuils River police joined the localneighbourhoodwatch patrols this pastweekend in a bid to tackle crime.

The police joined three neighbourhoodwatches in Sector 3 and 4 on Friday nightaround 19:30 and helped patrol the streets.

“Effective interaction between the neigh-bourhood watches and the police resultedin no crimes being reported during thistime of the operation, aptly named Opera-tionVastrap,” CaptainGerhardViviers, op-erational officer at the Kuils River policestation, said.

According to him, about 60 people attend-ed the patrol.

“We gathered at the Soneike ShoppingCentre with the three neighbourhoodwatches of Sector 3 and 4, namely theSoneike Neighbourhood Watch. They initi-ated the operation and invitedAmandel andSurrounds, as well as the Langverwachtand Surrounds Neighbourhood Watches to

assist them.“Although it was cold and wet the mem-

ber’s spirits were high and they were look-ing forward to executing the well-plannedoperation.”

He said the focus of Friday night’s opera-tionwas to showhighvisibility in identifiedhotspot areas as well as to create awarenessregarding the partnership between theneighbourhood watches, the police and oth-er law enforcement agencies such as theCity of Cape Town’s Metro Police.

Before the start of the evening, neigh-bourhood watch leaders all gave their valu-able input to the operation as to what is ex-pected of every member and what theyshould look out for.

“The members all left in their respectivevehicles to their different points as indicat-ed beforehand, where some remained stat-ic, and others patrolled within the area tobe on the lookout for suspicious vehiclesand people. They were permanently in ra-dio contactwith each other,”Viviers added.

The groupmanaged to arrest three people

on charges relating to drugs – a crime oftennot that much reported in the Sectors 3 and4.

Viviers said onMonday thepurpose of theexercise was to get neighbourhood watchesactive again in the area.

“This meeting and patrol was indeed ahuge milestone and great success.”

He said the police will be conductingmore of these sort of patrols in the near fu-ture. “There is definitely a great need.”

He said the policewill look at the possibil-ity of conducting similarpatrolswithneigh-bourhoodwatches in areas such asKalkfon-tein, Highbury and Sarepta.

Viviers said with neighbourhood watch-es being more active, more information isshared, which in return leads to more ar-rests.

“Everybody is looking forward to thenextjoint operation,” Viviers said.

mes and teaching them how to sandboard,a club was formed. The Mamba Sandboar-ding Club consists of 13 kids who now gosandboarding every Friday afternoon.It is a great way to get them off the streets,

If vagrants take garbage from a refuse bin,is it theirs? And what if a member of thepublic then takes the vagrant’s bag? Is thattheft?

These questions came to the fore after aParklands woman recently seized a va-grant’s bag and refused to give it back.

Outgoing community police forum chair-person AndrewBrace, and previous princi-pal inspector of the Displaced People’s Unit(DPU), Wayne Aldridge, clarified the mat-ter to TygerBurger.

“If you put something into the municipalrefuse bin with the intention of throwingit away and move the bin off your propertythen the contents of the bin belongs to theCity of Cape Town.While the bin is on yourproperty it still belongs to you.”

He says a member of the public has as lit-tle right to take a vagrants bag as it is forthe vagrant to take something out of thedustbin and putting it in there.

In such a situationAldridge says it is bestto notify the police, who are within theirrights to seize the bag. “It is up to the streetperson to prove that whatever is in that bagbelongs to him or her,” he continues.

“One thing is certain, members of thepublic should be very careful they don’tsubject themselves to a charge of assaultwhile they try to remove a bag, which in re-ality does not belong to them.”

Brace says the DPU can remove a varietyof items from vagrants. “These include anyitem that can be used to erect any type ofstructure, shelter or cover for possible un-lawful occupation of city owned land; shop-ping trolleys and carts; and any other itemsthat might be stolen goods.

Local doctors are currently conducting the LAVOLTA II research studyfor patients who are unable to control their asthma, despite the use ofconventional asthma controller medication. They want to evaluate aninvestigational asthma drug to see if it can help better control asthmasymptoms.

If you’ve been medically diagnosed with asthma and are havingdifficulty controlling your symptoms, even with conventional asthmacontroller medications, please consider learning more about this study.

To be considered for a screening visit, you must:

bruik van krukke en ’n rolstoel. Dit volg na-dat hy op driejarige ouderdommet polio ge-diagnoseer is. Hy is ook gedeeltelik blind asgevolg van die siekte, het hy vertel.Ben kan wel tussen lig en donker onder-

skei. Op sy lessenaar in sy kantoor by dieMetro-Noord-onderwys-distrikskantoor inTimmermanstraat inParow,waarhyopdieskakelbord werk, lê heelwat dokumente inbraille langs sy rekenaar en telefoon.In die hoek van sy klein kantoor staan sy

stasie vanaf Melton Rose. Hier moet hy

mus met die huiswerker was, het twee wekegelede die geld helder oordag uit die huis ge-steel. Die eienaar was nie tuis ten tye van dievoorval nie.Die huiswerker het tydens ondervraging

ingegee en die polisie na die rowers gelei,waar R360 000 teruggevind is.

“Daar is altyd iemand wat weet van diekontant wat jy by die huis aanhou en ditmaak jou ’n teiken,” sê ao. Friends of the Blaauwberg ConservationArea, adds that this does not only applyto endangered animals, but any rareitems.“There are anumber of critically endan-

gered plants and medicinal plants in thereserve. Geotagging can also lead someo-ne straight to historical or cultural arte-

facts. There has been theft of Battle ofBlaauwberg items from the battlefield be-fore. Geotagging can even lead someone toa collection of paintings in private homesand exhibition areas,” says Fuller-Gee.

Küyler elaborates ongeotagging when he saysthat some technology auto-matically record the GPSlocation for every imageone takes. This informati-on iswritten into the pictu-re’s metadata, so when oneuploads the images to theweb, the geographical co-ordinates are included aswell.“On smart phones the

geotagging feature is auto-matically turnedon, soyouhave to turn it off if youdon’t want to reveal the lo-cation of all your pictures.

On an iPhone you press ‘Settings’ and se-lect ‘General’, then ‘Location Services’.Disable the applications that make use ofGPS information. On Blackberry, selectthe camera icon. Press ‘Menu’, followedby ‘Options’. Set the geotagging option to‘Disabled’ and save. On Android activatethe camera and press the settings button.Turn off ‘Geotagging’ or ‘Location Stora-ge’.”

de nie geblaf of die inbrekers gebyt hetnie. “Ek het geweet Zinn het navorsingoor huisbrake gedoen en het hom genadersodat ons agter die kap van die byl kankom. Baie mense glo nog dat hul hondehulle gaan beskerm, maar is dan verbaasas daar by hulle ingebreek word,” sê Ja-cobs.Volgens Jacobs het Zinn se antwoord sy

vermoede bevestig dat inbrekers spesialeplanne vir honde het.Zinn sê van die inbrekersmetwie hy ty-

dens sy navorsing gepraat het, voel diemeeste waghonde is nie doeltreffend nie.“Daar blyk verskeie redes hiervoor te

wees, maar die grootste rede is omdat die

honde in die meeste gevalle nie opgelei isom aggressief te wees nie. Inbrekers stelhulle ook self dae voor die tyd aan die hon-de bekend deur hulle deur of oor die hei-ning te voed. “In sommige gevalle trek ’ninbreker die honde se aandag met ’n stukvleis of iets af, terwyl sy makkers dan diehuis rot en kaal besteel.“Die grootste vrees vir ’n inbreker is nie

dat die honde hom gaan byt nie, maar datdie honde die base gaan wakker maak.“Baie van die inbrekers deel diemening

dat ashulle net aggressief teenoordiehon-de optree, die diere gaan weghardloop. Ashulle byvoorbeeld een hond geskop hetmaak hulle net die deur oop en die hondehardloop uit. Troeteldiere is nie opgeleiom ‘gaste’ te byt nie,” meen Zinn.Honde kry, volgens Zinn, selfvertroue

A personal dream“It has always been my dream to be in

skate shows, especially ice shows, and toperform.“I wanted to do it after high school but

my mom said I have to go study first.“When I finishedmyarchitectural degree

I came back to skating. I tried to skate asmuchaspossible duringmystudies, tokeepfit and active and also keep in shape,” shesaid.Nicole applied to Disney in 2011 and two

weeks later got a reply. “They said theywanted me on board,” Nicole, who startedout her performing career as a gymnast,said.“My brother started ice skating halfway

through my gymnastic career and I startedgoing with him on Saturday mornings. I

just started skating, It really tookmy inter-est.”Nicole’s talent on the ice was soon recog-

nised by coaches who helped her developfurther.

OverwhelmingAsked about her experience with the Dis-

ney team in the USA, Nicole replied: “It hasreally been overwhelming.“Sometimes it is really tough but I guess

what they look for is just different qualitiesin people no matter where you are from.”So far Nicole has toured to several coun-

tries, starting her first 11 month long touralong the east coast of America.“I did about 38 cities in the first 11

months,” she said.The team then toured along the west

coast of the continent.“I have also been to Mexico and Puerto

Rico, and now South Africa.Disney on Ice 100 Years of Magic is to now

tour Europe.

Badisa Trio is presenting a free Work4aLi-ving course from Tuesday 5 August at itsoffice in Scottsdene in Kraaifontein to pre-pare young people for the market place.“Between the ages of 18 and 25, there are

2,5 million unemployed people in South Af-rica. Where we differ from the rest of theworld is that these young people do not ne-cessarily have a parent who is employed orself-employed. employment effectively, secure employ-ment and, once employed, to progress in

Kuils River residents were given thescope of crime during the newlyformed Community Police Forum’s

(CPF) first publicmeeting in 2014 lastweek.About 100 residents from suburbs includ-

ing Rouxville, Kalkfontein, Soneike andHazendal attended last Tuesday’s meeting.

The police believe a house robbery syndi-cate operating across the Peninsula is oftenbehind these crimes.

“Since 2013 we have identified six groupsoperating in the Kuils River area breakinginto houses, mostly into houses in affluentareas, and surrounding areas such as Bel-lville and Brackenfell,” Jacobs said.

Regarding car-hijackings, he said theyhave noticed these cases are mostly false.“In most of these complaints the person isalmost always alone when these crimes arecommitted.”

Asked for more details, Jacobs explainedthat very often the complainantwould havepicked up a prostitute along Old FaureRoad inMfuleniwhen thehijacking occurs.

Another issue highlighted at themeetingwas the increase in crimes relating to drugsand gangsterism, especially in Sector 2.

“Most of the drug dens and shebeens arelocated in this area.”

Police informationpoints to 32 active she-beens in this small area.

Jacobs said gang violence in Sector 2 andthe nearby Wesbank are “interlinked.”

Reducing drugs“You will find that these gangs will oper-

ate in Wesbank but shoot in Kuils River,therefore we also have to focus on reducingthe amount of drugs in circulation in theseareas,” he said.

Complaints raised by some residents in-cluded illegal drag racing, nightclubs, ille-gal horse carts collecting refuse, as well asillegal hawkers, scrapyards and homelesspeople.

Some residents also complained aboutthe lack of police visibility to which Jacobssaid they are aware of this problem.He saidthey were held back by lack of staff and re-sources.

“Due to a staff decrease it has become dif-ficult to deploy vehicles. We now focus onwhere the crimes are committed andpriori-tise our police deployment accordingly.”

He said the police try to address crime inthe whole area by following this “standardapproach to deployment.”

Kuils River CPF chair Alton Payne saidKuils River is divided into four sectors,each with its own neighbourhood watchand block watches.

“We discovered tonight that the policeare facing certain challenges in order forthem to deliver a service. We will appreci-ate it if people can join hands with the po-lice and help fight crime,” said Payne.

I am constantly surprised byhow many dog owners in theKenridge and Durbanville Hillsareas walk their dogs withoutleashes, and how many dogsroam the streets without theirowners.

While walking my miniaturepoodle on a leash last year, shewas attacked by a large dogwho grabbed her in his mouth,shook her around, ran off, thensuddenly dumped her.

Needless to say, there was alarge veterinary bill, which theowner of the dog refused todiscuss and he renouncedownership. The police subse-quently told me that the doghad been returned to the pound.

While walking my dog withmy husband this year, aDoberman ran out of theproperty and went straight formy poodle. My husband kickedhim away before he could dodamage.

Not so long ago my neigh-bours were walking their dogon a leash and a St Bernardwent for their Labrador,attaching himself to the Labra-dor’s rump.

While driving in the neigh-bourhood last week, I noticed awoman walking two large dogswithout leashes, and on anotheroccasion, a man walking a largedog off leash.

I am too afraid to go for awalk, which is good for myhealth and that of my small pet,because of the unsocialisedanimals in our vicinity. It’s notright.

It is commonplace to see ownerswalking their dogs off their leads, andwhile in an ideal world, it would belovely to be able to give them thatfreedom, there are often complicationsthat come with letting animals go wherethey please.

According to the City of Cape Town’sanimal by-law, no dog is allowed in apublic street or space without a leash,unless the dog is in an area designatedby the council as a free running area.While there don’t seem to be too many ofthese in the Northern Suburbs, a list ofdog friendly beaches can be found atwww.spca-ct.co.za.

Likewise, owners also have a responsi-bility to clean up after their dogs. Simplycarrying a plastic bag with you when youare walking your dog would allow you topick up his “business” and discard it in abin where it cannot offend anyone.

At the end of the day, being considerateis all it takes to create an environmentwhere we can all care for our pets inharmony. Simply ensure your dog can’tdo what you wouldn’t want another to doto yours.

Freshening up: Staff members of Ackermans Home and their Footwear Team from thecompany’s head office in Kuils River recently rolled up their sleeves to do a bit ofcommunity work in Kalkfontein and Vrygrond. Jevon Barry, social developer at thecommunity based organization Badisa, said by doing so Ackermans personnel enriched thelives of many individuals. The teams helped out at daycare centres and two home basedprograms in the communities. The front and interior of the daycare centre was repainted.Vegetable gardens for each of the daycare centres and home based programmes weredesigned and planted. Blankets and toys were distributed and given to each child, as wellas lucky packets. In total 32 children at the Sunrise Daycare in Kalkfontein, six children atthe Baby Land Programme, and another six from the All Nations Home Programme werefed thanks to Ackermans donation. Jevon said a total of R13 855 was spent on all of theevents on Tuesday 8 July.

Durbanville’s multifarious Mr Cat andthe Jackal are about to release theirthird album, S3T.

The number three is a recurring featurefor the album, which was recorded overthree years, in three studios, and coversthree themes, namely: love, regret anddoom.The off-beat band, made up of Gertjie Bes-

selsen, Jacques du Plessis, Pierre-ArnoldTheron, Marcel Christie and JC Visser, gottheir start in 2006 writing theatrical scoresfor local productions.“The plan was always to develop it into a

live music band,” Gertjie says, but pointsout that they use the same sort of structurein the band’s music they would use in sco-ring a theatre production.Once their songs have been recorded, they

then have to work out how to perform themlive. “It’s always a bit different from the re-cording.” With a myriad of unusual instru-ments making their way into Mr Cat’s mu-sic, the band’s live shows are something ofa theatrical production in itself.

ExperimentalGertjie and Jacques usually develop the

core of a song before working out what ac-companiment it needs, the song then gets re-corded and has percussion and other ele-ments added. “Then it would be much moreinstruments than we can actually play liveon stage with five guys.”This is why they band are a lot more expe-

rimental in studio, where Jacques says theydo a lot of layering. “That definitely comesfrom composing for theatre,” he says.The result, asGertjie explains, is a theatri-

cal, alternative folk sound. “It’s difficult topinpoint one thing because we draw fromlots of different genres and we play differentinstruments,” he says.

From the blues to the tango, you can ex-pect tohear lots of different elements in theirmusic, making theirs a very “world” sound.Gertjie says the new album is more seri-

ous than their previous releases. “It’s moreof a grown up album,” he says, but quicklypoints out that it hasn’t lost any of the band’sexperimental flair.Jacques points out that S3T was mixed

and recorded in amore structured way thanwhat they’ve done before and that it’s got amore mature and fuller sound.

Elemental vibesThe album’s themes simply came from

what the band had beenwriting over the lastfew years. “We didn’t plan on a concept al-bum,” Jacques says.“It feels tome likewekind of found certain

ways of writing certain song,” he says, ad-ding that it just happened to work out thatthe songs fitted into three different themes.Gertjie says the new album puts forward

what the bandwants to be doing. Before theywere still finding their feetmusically, but hesays they are now much more set in whatthey do.While some of the album was recorded at

The Fresh Meat Studio in Durbanville andthe University of Stellenbosch’s studio, thethird studio is “everywhere else”.Gertjie explains that they recorded sound-

scapes like the sound of a river, or fire,which set the tone or vibe for the songs. “It’slike the feel of where the song goes and sitson top of,” he says.Fans can experience the album’s vibes

Ready to show the world Cape Town belongs on the international marathon scene are WesternProvince Athletics president Jakes Jacobs, marathon champion and ambassador for the SanlamCape Town Marathon Elana Meyer, Chief Executive for Sanlam Brand Yegs Ramiah and 1995Rugby World Cup captain and marathon ambassador Francois Pienaar.

Launched as a two-day ‘festival of run-ning’ from Saturday 20 September toSunday 21 September, with themain at-

traction on the final day, the Sanlam CapeTown Marathon has achieved significantplanning targets in the build-up to its 60-daycountdown.Towards its five-year vision of becoming

an internationally accredited 42.2km mara-thon, an InternationalAssociation ofAthlet-ics Federation (IAAF) delegation will assessits eligibility for classification as a BronzeLabel event.“We offer the highest purse for a South Af-

rican standard marathon, with total prizemoney exceeding R1,6 million – a require-ment for IAAF Label accreditation,” saidevent ambassador ElanaMeyer, an Olympicmedallist and repeat record-holder in long-distance running.“This is largely due to the vested interest

this year at the FISAF (International WorldFitness & Hip Hop Unite Championships) inPrague from 21-26 October.

Megan is the TygerBurger sportstar of themonth winner.

The 16-year-oldfrom DF Malan HighSchool and memberof the Splice Studioin Boston competesin the junior singlesand junior team ae-robic categories.

No quickfix“It all started back

in grade 6 when Istarted competing. Alot of thanks has to goto my parents forsupporting me andmy coach Marzannele Roux.

“There is no quickfix or short-cuts, itall comes down tohard work and dedi-cation. I train twice aday, six days aweek,” said Megan.

She has on two previous occasions compe-ted on the international scene. In 2012 shewas in the Netherlands and last year in Ser-bia. In both championships she competed onan invitational basis.

She now goes to Prague wearing her full

Protea colours.“This is surely, without doubt, a special

moment I will remember forever. I must sayit gets a little easier going overseas now tocompete for the third time. Not the competi-tion, because according to me the standardjust gets better year by year, but from an ex-perience point of view.

“I know what to expect and I am lookingforward to the challenge. But for now, it’s ti-

me to put in the hardwork and make surethat when I step onthat plane, I know Ihave done my verybest to prepare forthe championships.

nour for me to be se-lected as the Tyger-Burger sportstar ofthe month winner. Itall was a huge sur-prise as my dad ente-red me and I didn’teven know about it.It’s only when I gotthe call to congratu-late me that I knewabout it. I would liketo thank everyoneinvolved.”
