    Omission

In the edition of 11 November,

    TygerBurger published a photo

    caption with the heading Fights

    photographer was accidentally

omitted. The photo was taken by

    Lucille Julius. TygerBurger apolo-

    gises for the omission.

    Indie vakansietyd sal dieWes-Kaapse on-

derwysdepartement nie met skole kan kom-

    munikeer oor aansoeke nie.

Daarom vra ons dringend dat aansoeke

afgehandel moet word voor die skool sluit.

Indien mense hulp benodig, kan hulle hul

    naaste distrikskantoor nader, s Schfer.

    Schfer.

    V

ictims of crimeneed to talk about their

    traumatic experience often in order

for them to recover and move on.

This is the advice of a volunteer at the

    Kuils River polices Victim Empowerment

Programme (VEP) where victims of crime

mostly women and children are regularly

treated, counselled and supported after a

    crime has occurred.

The VEP roomwas recently upgraded and

boasts several toys and wall art to ensure a

    safe and secure environment.

Sashma Bergman, coordinator of the VEP

room, told TygerBurger last week the team

always tried to counsel victims as soon as

    possible after an incident.

Wenever really go out to the crime scene,

but rather bring the victims here to a safe

    and comfortable environment, Sashma

    says.

The team regularly counsels victims of do-

mestic abuse, sexual assault, rape, robbery

    and murder.

The aid of the VEP team however does not

    stop there.

When these victims have to appear in

court, we as the VEP team like to be there

and in sodoing support them, addsSashma,

who previously worked as a debt collector.

She resigned her job after she became re-

    born.

God guided me forward and I decided to

do a social development auxiliary course for

a year after which I started working here,

    she says.

Her love for babies and children, she ex-

plains, is actually what made her decide to

pursue a career as a social worker.

Working with children and even the eld-

erly that is what drives me, she says.

    Currently there are 14 volunteersworking

at the VEP room. The group are on standby

    throughout the week.

The team are currently planning a mas-

sive march for Wednesday 25 November

from the police station down the main road

to the Fresh Stop at the Caltex service sta-

tion as part of their annual 16 Days of Activ-

ism celebrations. Kuils River residents are

    invited to participate.

The team will also be handing out clothes

in Jacobsdal on Saturday 28 November as

part of the 16 Days activities.

    Loving support for

    victims of criminals

    FROM PAGE 1

We do this until both parties are ready.

If the victim has any questions the of-

fender then has the opportunity to an-

    swer these questions.

    Wehavehad some successful sessions

where the victims have forgiven their

    perpetrators, Akhona explained.

Valda Lucas, another victim, also had

the opportunity to meet her attacker.

I feared the day that he would be re-

leased from jail, the robbery victim

    said.

Later during the session she said: One

should always believe that there is good

in others and look for that good.

    Her attacker, Sofire Bomvana, who

    serveda15-year jail sentence, saidhewas

thankful for her forgiveness. It is not al-

ways easy to forgive, he says.

Towards the end of the programme Si-

pho said he found peace in his heart hav-

    ing forgiven his attacker.

    Sipho Malgas, Bathandwa

    Ngxobongwana, Valda

    Lucas and Sofire

    Bomvana took part in the

    tional services victim

    week Thursday at the

    Bardale community hall.

An open air carols by candlelight

evening will be held next month in

    Kalkfontein, Kuils River.

The theme for the event is for the

    community, by the community.

The event will take place on Friday 4

December in Mimosa Street at 19:30.

Entry is free and everyone is wel-

    come.

We would like the community to join

    U

nless a speed hump gets erected in

their street, someone will get hurt.

This is the opinion of Kuils River

    resident Denvir Theunissen, who has

drawn up a petition to have a traffic calm-

ing measure erected in his street.

Motorists and bikers often speed here, he

    says.

The road in question is Goudwilger

    Street, Amandelrug.

    TygerBurger recently reported on the

    planned speedhumps forPatrysStreet near-

    by, Speedhumps in theplanning,Wednes-

day 28 October. Theunissen responded, say-

ing they have been struggling to get the

same done in their area for some time now.

Our street is 300 metres long and we

dont have sidewalks. People run, cycle and

walk their dogs, and kids play in the street.

A church is situated at the T-junction of

Goudwilger Street. I personally have had a

    couple of nearmisses exitingmydriveway,

    he wrote in the petition.

The petition, dated 4 August 2015, to date

has 49 signatures. Residents of Goudwilger

Street hope that this might make a differ-

ence after their initial request to have a

speed hump built was denied a year ago.

Theunissen says what is more upsetting,

is that two neighbouring streets Patrys

and Fisant streets are now given speed

    humps.

This (Goudwilger) is a straight road.

When do they want to act when someone

gets killed first? Denvir wants to know.

In a copyof the original outcomeof assess-

ments done in Goudwilger Street issued by

the City of Cape Towns Transport for Cape

Town and dated 21 November 2014, it says

assessment of roads incorporates a range of

factors. These include speed, accident histo-

    ry, traffic volumes, pedestrian facilities,

property access and population density. It

also includes parking activity and pedestri-

    an and cyclist activity.

The 2014 assessment found that the traffic

volume in Goudwilger Street is acceptable

and within the environment capacity of the

road. It also states that pedestrian activities

were observed to be low. Pedestrian and ve-

hicle conflict as a result are also considered

to be low. There are also no schools and pub-

lic parks nearby, the assessment states.

    According to Theunissen however, this

    picture changes after hours.

Most of the road users are here after

17:00. That is when they need to do their site

    visit and survey, he says.

Theunissen says he plans to take the issue

further. I might have to go to parliament,

    he adds.

A copy of the petition was e-mailed to the

    local councils office.

    nadine Coetzee, n Kuilsrivier-ma, on-

    weke gelede soos oudergewoonte haar

    werkskoene uitgeskop en haarwarmste-

wels aangetrek toe sy iets vreemds bin-

    ne-in voel.

    vrygelaat.

Bernadine woon in Deo Gracia naby

    die Zevenwacht-landgoed, waar tans

bouwerk aan die gang is. Ek vermoed

dis waar die ding vandaan gekom het,

    s sy.

    Syvoegby: Daai aandkoneknie slaap

nie. Ek hetmy bed uitmekaar gehaal, die

matras omgedraai, kaste uitgepak en vir

nog slange gesoek. Ek het die kamer

deeglik deursoek totdat ek heeltemal te-

    vrede was.

Vroer daardie week is nog n mol-

slang in die gesin se huis in Tiemiestraat

    gekry.

Dis die Here se genade,

    Molslang kruip weg

    in vrou se stewel

    Solidariteit Helpende Hand gaan weer

eens behoeftige kinders in Kaapstad van

skooltassies vir hul eerste skooljaar in 2016

voorsien.

by graad 1s geskep word wanneer hulle die

    nodige skoolgoedjies kry. Dis ongelooflik

om die kinders se opgewonde gesiggies te

sien wanneer hulle die nuwe skooltassies

uitpak, s Marlien van der Westhuizen,

    mediawoordvoerder. Elke skooltassie sal

soos gewoonlik al die nodige skryfbehoeftes

bevat, maar vanjaar sal daar n paar byko-

mende items wees. Om uit te vind wat in

die skooltassie moet wees, het Helpende

    Hand met graad 1-onderwyseresse gepraat

in n opname by meer as 200 skole. Dit het

duidelik geword dat perseptuele en moto-

riese vaardighede die grootste twee leerpro-

bleme vir graad 1s is. Om die motoriese

    vaardighede aan tehelp, hetHelpendeHand

    Unifix-blokkies en n legkaart ingesluit.

    Daarbywordkinders se perseptuele vaar-

dighede verbeter deur op die witbord, ook

ingesluit in die tassie, te skryf. Daar sal

se Eendag as ek groot isdroom n werklikheid

word. SMS die woord Tassie na 38969 om R10 te

esidents of Kalkfontein have taken to

the streets, not to protest against poor

service delivery though, but to clean

up the areas dirty streets themselves.

The area has several street corners and

open pieces of land littered with rubbish.

This is what sparked some community

workers here to start the Clean Up Your

    Community awareness campaign a cam-

    paign coordinated by the community-based

    organisation Badisa through their Bure

    Help Bure volunteers.

The campaign was launched a week ago

at the local Kalkfontein community hall.

Eugene de Vis, a Badisa community de-

    velopment worker, said last Wednesdays

launch of the programme was a huge suc-

    cess.

On the day informative flyers were dis-

tributed among the residents by the volun-

    teers, Eugene said.

The aim of the campaign is to promote

    good neighbourliness, to raise conscious-

ness about the importance of living in a

clean environment and to instil a culture of

    ownership and responsibility among people

who live in the community, Eugene ex-

    plained.

He added they also aim to encourage

households to keep their yards and side-

walks neat and tidy at all times. This way

children can have a positive outlook on the

    community.

Streets that were targeted include Veren-

igde, Bettie, Elmarie, Hester, Elizabeth and

    Brenda streets.

    Several community organisations, early

    childhood development centres and com-

    munity leaders including ward councillor

Jacob Jacobs attended last weeks launch.

They were joined by Stanley Sayers, the

eastern sub-district health promotor at the

City of Cape Town and Phillip Bosman, a

    representative from the Citys department

    of environmental health.

    Kalkfontein residents

    start cleaning up

Some of the volunteers who helped distribute flyers in Kalkfontein last week are from left

Magdeline Joshua, Emma Cleophas, Elizabeth Lebitsa, Elsie Van Wyk, Wadene Davids, Claudia

Naken, Julia Sohuma, Carol Collins and Anna Dunn, with Greef Manka in front.

Some of the areas children from to different ECDs also participated in the days activities.

    liefdadigheidsorganisasie, Matla a Bana.

Die boek word op Dinsdag 24 November

by die Isabellas-restaurant in die Willow-

    bridge-winkelsentrum bekendgestel. Han-

lie Retief, die bekende rubriekskrywer van

Rapport, sal die vraag en antwoord-sessie

behartig. Die bekendstelling begin om 18:30

    [email protected] is

    noodsaaklik.

Monique vertel s oor die nuwe boek:

    Vreeskan jou laat glodat dingegebeurwat

    nique.

Daar

moes die gyselaars vier maande lank in le-

    wensgevaarlike toestande oorleef totdat

kol. Moeammar Ghadaffi hul vrylating be-

    luide gehoor.

In daardie stadium was hy so vreesbe-

The City of Cape Town has all

    these billboards up, claiming

    they are fighting the drug

    problem in Cape Town, but

    cannot keep their own en-

    trance clean.

    At the down-ramp leading to

    the Civic Centre entrance at

    DF Malan Street and Hertzog

    Boulevard, the young people

    are tikking daily non-stop.

They do not even hide it

    anymore. City of Cape Town

    employees see this and just

    walk past.

    If you confront them, they

    become hostile and threaten to

stone your car. I am working

    in the Towers building with

    the same entrance, and these

    people are unstoppable. They

    even bring their kids with

    them.

This is a disgrace that the

City cannot even fight this, but

want to take on the big guns.

    Get some undercover people

there to watch, and you will be

    shocked. The whole place is

full of small plastic bags and

foil. I have never used drugs,

but after seeing what I have

seen the past couple of months,

I can tell you exactly how to

    use drugs.

    Patricia, clean up your

    porch.

    The constant reckless, thought-

    less and downright criminal

    activity caused by drivers is

    actually quite breathtaking.

    Stop signs have by pure

    miracle changed to yield signs.

    Road etiquette is non existent.

Dont try crossing at a zebra

crossing; it is far too danger-

    ous.

When it comes to red robots

I would like to provide clarity.

When the red light shines, it

    means stop. This actually

    Traffic rules not for

    thesemotorists

means that you have to stay

stationary till the green light is

    activated, but please be careful

    when crossing or turning as

    there could be other drivers

coming from the other side who

are not familiar with the robot

    concept either.

    As an example, this morning

    (10 November) at 07:50 waiting

on the corner of Tindale and

    Durban roads, a white Range

Rover with a CF number plate

    decided that they were absolute-

    ly special, therefore mounting

    the pavement driving over the

lawn into the left turning lane.

    But then, feeling even more

important than the rest of the

    drivers waiting patiently,

    turned left into Durban Road

while the robot was still red!

Last week when I was driving

    home on Durban Road past

Tyger Valley, I could see the

driver in front of me was

    driving erratic, slowing down,

    speeding up, not quite in

control if at all. A young female

about 26 old was driving a

    black Toyota Yaris, merrily

texting away. I pulled up next

to her and hooted a few times.

She was so engrossed that she

    did not even hear me.

    When she eventually noticed I

indicated as to what she was

doing. Well, I got the one finger

salute. I told her to pull over

and text. That brought on a

torrent of abuse. I am sure her

    parents would have been so

    proud.

A while ago I was at Aurora

    shopping centre. As I was

walking towards the Spar, a 4x4

    parks in the disabled parking.

    Out jumps a perfectly healthy

    male. I approached him and

    asked him whether he realised

where he has parked. He stated

yes and when I asked him to

move he told me to (as this

is a family community paper I

    cannot exactly repeat what he

told me, but you can guess.)

The issue with disabled bays in

    shopping centres is that the

    owners are responsible to

    patrol this aspect. Well, what

    can I say.

Many years ago I made a

    suggestion to council that

    shopping centres cede (title

    Regarding the poor service at

    the licensing department in

    Milnerton (City doesnt work

    for me!, TB Milnerton, 11

    November.) I also waited for

    hours last week!

    When I enquired about the

    window for licence renewals

that was unattended and a long

queue waiting in front of it, an

    employee of the City answered

me with I think they are on a

    break.

How can an employee go on a

    tea break without someone

    relieving them when the whole

office is full of people waiting

    to be helped?

I agree, this is fourth world

service, but if you do not renew

    your licence, you will quickly

    receive a hefty fine. Double

    standards?

    Re the deputy mayors

    response: Sir why must the

    public first complain? Where is

the manager on duty who is

paid by us as as taxpayers?

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Start saving

    water before

    its too late

The looming national water crisis is

closer to home than you may think.

South Africa is facing its worst drought

in over two decades and our clean water

    supply is under heavy strain.

    Local government has announced that

it may implement water savings targets

from as soon as next month and the

    provincial government is already looking

    at precautionary restrictions for areas

such as the Karoo and West Coast.

Its only a matter of time before Cape

Town starts feeling the pinch too.

It has a devastating effect on the

agricultural sector and well no doubt see

a rise in food prices and subsequently an

increase in the cost of living too. It

paints a gloomy picture for next year.

But there is something we can do now:

Save water. It sounds simple enough, but

every day we waste litres of water

    through carelessness.

Simple acts, such as ensuring your

pipes have no leaks and not watering

your garden or filling your pool during

the day, go a long way to saving water.

In fact, put away your hosepipe. Water

your plants with a watering can and

wash your car with a bucket youll be

conscious of how much water youre

using and save some in the process.

Dont leave taps running while washing

hands or brushing teeth, and shower

with purpose the time for leisurely long

    showers is over.

Saving water is our responsibility. We

need to start doing it right now saving

water when there is none is too late.

    deed) disabled parking bays to

    the city, thus allowing law

    enforcement to issue fines. law

    enforcement cannot issue fines

    of this nature on private

    property.

    The daunting issue about

these lawless drivers is the fact

that many times children are in

the vehicle. So when the child

    grows up he/she will most

    probably do exactly the same,

    because their parents taught

them doing it like an expert.

    I have approached the

    authorities many times, but I

get the feeling that in their

    minds they are saying what

problem? and this I can base

on the fact that there has been

    no action for years. Lawless

    noot afskop asmetKlassieke Kersfees

op Sondag 13 Desember in die Liqui-

    Fruit-amfiteater in die Paarl nie.

Di konsert, wat aangebied word deur

    die Tygervallei-sentrum, TygerBurger en

Tygerberg 104fm, spog met vier van die

    grootste stemme in die Suid-Afrikaanse

    musiekbedryf: Jannie Moolman, Corlea

klassieke nommers soos All IAsk ofYou,

OHoly Night, Pie Jesu, AveMaria en

    Marys Boy Child verwag.

beskikbaar is. Di wat nie beskikbaar is

nie, word dan georkestreer spesiaal vir

    hierdie konsert, verduidelik Melissa.

    sert, s Melissa.

Die konsert, wat vanjaar vir die vierde

jaar aangebied word, is verlede jaar deur

meer as 3 000mense bygewoon.

V Kaartjies is beskikbaar by Computicket.
