Kleinvlei police have issued a freshwar-ning to those wanting to make use ofthe services of sex workers along Old

Faure Road, but often end up being the vic-tim of assault or sometimes murder.The warning follows the recent discovery

of a body in the bushes next to the road. Poli-ce spokespersonWarrantOfficerAnnaceltta

Mothoalo said the body was that of an 65-ye-ar-old male.Mothoalo accompanied TygerBurger to

the scene of the crime. The body was buriedin a shallow grave, which was still clearlyvisible. The scenewas about 500metres fromthe road and about 300 metres from theFaure Squatter Camp.Six suspects, between the ages of 20 and

25 years, who are apparently from the infor-mal settlement, have already been arrested

in connection with themurder which occur-red on Wednesday 20 May. Some of them,Mothoalo said, have already confessed to thecrime.She said the victimwas stabbed several ti-

mes in the stomach.The police suspect the deceased made use

of the services offered by sex workers whenhewas attacked bywhat is referred to by thewomenas their bodyguards.Thesedaysmenknown in the trade as ‘johns’, park their cars

on a gravel road as the sexworkers havemo-ved their business from Old Faure Road asa result of more police patrols, she said.She said residents in the area alerted the

police about the most recent murder.On arrival at the crime scene police could

only manage to see a belt, cell phone and so-me bank cards around the grave.The victim’s vehicle was recovered in

hing their cars and details inthe tabloid newspapers andin so doing hope they will re-frain from coming here,” hesaid.The CPF is also requesting

Kleinvlei police are searching for themother of a five-month-old foetusfound in a bucket early last week.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer An-naclettaMothoalo said the foetuswas foundby a group of children.“Apparently the children were busy play-

ing with the bucket with the foetus inside,”Mothoalo said.

The children took the bucket to a houseshortly thereafter.“We received a complaint not too long aft-

er that. One of the adults at the house saidthey found the foetus inside the bucket.”The foetuswas found in Sandpiper Street,

Devon Park.The gender of the foetus is not yet known

and a case of concealment of birth is beinginvestigated.Mothoalo said the discovery is the third

of its kind in the past two years.

“This is not the first time we have re-ceived such a complaint.”Previous incidents occurred in Forrest

Heights and Heather Park.“It concerns us, as these areas are all lo-

cated near to each other, separated only byBobs Way,” Mothoalo said.Thepolicehope the communitywill assist

in finding the mother.The previous babieswere a boy and a girl.

A high speed chase similar tothat in a Hollywood movieplayed itself out in the

streets of Kuils River and EersteRiver last week.The chasewaswitnessed by sev-

eral road users in the area whotook to social media to report onit. One Facebook user reportedthat cars had to be re-routed dueto roads being cordoned off as a re-sult of the chase. Another usercommented on this, applaudingthe police for their swift reactionand subsequent recovery of sus-pected stolen vehicles.

Racing in the streetThe high speed chase in which

members from the Kuils Riverand Kleinvlei police stations,along with City of Cape Town traf-fic officers took part occurred lastTuesday 26 May.The chase followed a house rob-

bery in SomersetWest earlier thatday.The suspects fled the scene in

the direction of Kuils River in twovehicles belonging to the com-plainant.Mayco member for safety and

security, JP Smith, said traffic of-ficers reacted to what they initial-ly thought might be an illegalstreet race, but instead turned outto be an escape.“The officers were on patrol

along the R102 when they noticedtwo vehicles travelling at highspeed and gave chase.“The vehicles – awhite FordKu-

ga and VW Golf, were forced tostop at a red traffic light at the in-tersection of Van Riebeeck Roadand Stellenbosch Arterial. One ofthe traffic officers approached theVW Golf to ask the driver to pullover, but he jumped out of the ve-hicle – firearm inhand – and push-ed the officer to the ground. Shealerted her colleague who drewher firearm and fired three shotsat the vehicle as both vehiclessped off once more,” Smith said.

Firearms recoveredBoth the traffic officials and po-

lice chased the vehicles.“A fewminutes later, the driver

of the FordKuga collidedwith twoother vehicles at a four-way stop.Unfortunately, the two occupantsin the Kuga managed to flee thescene.“The driver of the VW Golf led

the police on a chase into EersteRiver before hitting a kerb andcolliding with a police vehicle. Hefired several shots at the officerswhile fleeing the scene,” Smith ex-plained.The police recovered several

firearms in the two vehicles, in-cluding an R4 rifle and a huntingrifle.Captain Isaac van Niekerk,

Kuils River police spokesperson,said a television set, cash, cellphone and the stolen vehicleswere recovered.“All round, this was an example

of good cooperation between traf-fic services and the police, and yetanother example of how the vari-ous agencies collaborate on a dai-ly basis,” said Smith.

One of the vehicles the suspects were travelling in, a Ford Kuga,crashed into another car (pictured) which was badly damaged asa result of the accident. The suspects fled the scene.

Clearing of ‘danger bush’ begins

After a series of requests and numerouscomplaints by residents and the localward councillor, the dense bush near

Blueberry Hill in Blue Downs is being clea-red.Workers from the City of Cape Town have

started cutting down the section near theTuscany Glen High School and a large secti-on of bushes have already been cleared.The Blueberry Hill bush has been an eye-

sore and safety hazard for many years now.The area, which is mostly covered in PortJackson, has been cut downonnumerous oc-casions in the past, only to grow againmonths later.The hope now is that the area will remain

clear and the land will be developed.Speaking to TygerBurger recently, Ward

17 councillor Wilma Brady said work onclearing the bushes started on Monday 18May.

Followup clearing“We will be doing phases one and two

which is next to Tuscany Glen High Schoolfirst.“In the new budget year wewill seekmore

funding to do follow-up clearing of thebush,” Brady said.They anticipate that phase one will be

completed before the start of the rainy sea-son.

TheBlueberryHill bush has been associa-tedwith criminal elements and prostitution.Apart from this, an informal settlement

had also been erected inside the bushes, saypolice.Brady said council has been asking for the

clearing and development of the bush since1999.It has been cleared in the past, but has

grown back in the interim.“It has become the norm that it does not

get cleared every year,” said Brady.“It took two to three years for the bushes

to be cleared.”

Criminal shelterThe area, according to her, has also beco-

me a known drug den.“It has become a shelter for storing and

selling drugs.“I think Tuscany Glen and Blue Downs re-

sidentswill really benefit from this clearing,it terms of crime. Several houses near thebush used to be targeted by criminals.”Phase one of the clearing project compri-

ses 18.33 hectares of land, while phase twocomprises about 13.34 hectares.The vacant land belongs to both the City

and provincial government.“Now that it is in the City’s hands it’s

much easier to have the land cleaned,” Bra-dy said.She said no concrete plans have yet been

drafted for the land, but said housing deve-lopment projects are being considered for

the area.“I spoke to the mayor regarding this. She

is making sure the transfer of the land fromthe provincial government to the City is be-ing completed.

“Once this is finalised, we’re hoping thatin the near future there will be a proposalwhich she (the mayor) has been calling forregarding development at Blueberry Hill,”Brady said.

The Kuils River police have issued a war-ning to residents following several reportsof potential robbers visiting homes preten-ding to be council workers.The suspects apparently knock on the

door and claim they are there to fix an elec-trical problem.In all of the reports received so far, howe-

ver, none of the home owners have reportedany electical problemsor contacted theCityof Cape Town, said police spokespersonCaptain Isaac van Niekerk.He said it appears the men want to gain

access to homes in order to rob the occu-pants.Van Niekerk told TygerBurger reports

have been received from residents in the

area andneighbouring areas. To date a resi-dent in Sarepta, Kuils River, Bellville andone in Tenth Avenue, Ravensmead have re-ported the matter to the police.“They normally say they are there to

work on the electricity cables.“The men are dressed in council clothes

with the CoCT marking on them.“When people do not allow them access

they just move on,” van Niekerk said.He said the two men drive a white panel

van. “We suspect the clothes they are wea-ring are stolen.“We have not received any reports of the

Cold increases danger of shack fireRICHARD ROBERTS

Several Wesbank families are still re-covering from a disastrous fire thatgutted two homes and five informal

structures.The incident occurred in Rowellan Street

on Sunday 17 May.One adult male suffered burn wounds to

his face.“All of the houses on the plot in Rowellan

Street are destroyed,” said communityworker Edith van Wyk, who attended thescene.Several fires have occurred in the Wes-

bank and Kalkfontein area since the start ofthe year. In most cases informal structuresare burnt down, partially damaging adja-cent houses.The cause of the most recent fire is still

unknown, said van Wyk.“One of the residents said she saw flames

coming out of one of the wendy houses.When she ran out, all the wendy houses inthe yard were burning.”Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of

Cape Town’s fire and rescue services, last

week said he cannot provide specific statis-tics for the northern suburbs regarding fireincidents, but toldTygerBurger that anaver-age of 106 emergency calls from informal ar-eas were received during the winter monthsof June, July and August last year.The number of recorded informal dwell-

ings affected by these fires for the threemonths were 210 in June, 169 in July and 175in August.The number of formal dwellings affected

by fires for each of the months were 41, 87and 57 respectively.

Winter dangerLayne explained that the cold and inclem-

ent weather experienced in the Cape duringthe winter period will force people to con-stantly need to keep warm. Due to a lack ofelectricity inmanyhomes in informal settle-ments, this might result in the use of warm-ing devices suchasheaters andbrazier fires.If not monitored properly, these can resultin residential fires.“Our services, for the previous winter pe-

riod 1 May to 31 August 2014, responded to406 informal residential fires, resulting inthe deaths of 36 people.

“In most of these incidents the fires couldhave been avoided and can be attributed tonegligencewhen using cooking, heating andother electrical devices.”He said the City is making all attempts to

ensure that thenumberof structures and thenumber of fatalities decrease during theforthcoming winter period.“Our service is proactively focussing their

Fire Safety Education efforts on the area’smost prone to structural fires.“Fire and rescue is also teaming up with

other services to ensure that the maximumnumber of residents are educated on aspectsof fire safety and the immediate reporting ofincidents. These include the City’s disasterrisk management, community NGO’s andcommunity policing forums,” Layne said.He added that most fires are caused by

lack of thought or concentration, or by care-lessness.“Cigarettes, matches and lighters, can-

dles, electrical faults, heating and cookingappliances and equipment such as electricblankets can all be lethal.”In order to prevent shack fires, residents

should:Keep a close eye on paraffin stoves;

Avoid cooking near a curtained window;Make sure the stove is stable and does not

fall over;Make sure candles are secure and cannot

fall over;Do not go to sleep with candles still burn-

ing;Teach children about the dangers of fire;Watch out for discarded cigarette butts;Be aware of the dangers of illegal and

faulty electricity connections, which alsocause fires;Keep a bucket filled with water to extin-

guish flames;Keep a bucket of sand to put out paraffin

fires;Build dwellings at least threemetres apart

to prevent fires from spreading, and ensurethis space is kept open;Keep roads and access to dwellings clear

at all times;Do not block roads with possessions when

there is a fire;Do not prevent or disrupt the work of fire

Mfuleni police confiscated a large amountof copper and other items from an illegalscrapyard recently, thanks to the newly in-stituted Operation Fiela.Police spokesperson Captain Nomath-

emba Muavha said several other arrestshave also been made in their area underthe auspices of this operation.Operation Fiela – a national police in-

struction – focuses mainly on gang-riddenareas. The operation started in Cape Townabout two weeks ago.To date, gang hotspots inManenberg and

Ottery have been visited by both memberof the police and South African NationalDefence Force as part of the ongoing opera-tion. Operation Fiela, meaning to reclaim,has since moved to several other areas inan attempt to rid communities of gang vio-lence.In Happy Valley, where the operation

was also conductedbyMfuleni policemem-bers, copper was confiscated from an ille-gal scrapyard, the police say.The search and confiscation occurred on

Tuesday 26 May.“The police were visiting scrapyards in

Happy Valley and found an illegal scrap-yard which had copper that was not ac-

counted for in its record book.“The 32-year-old owner was fined R2 500

for not complying with the requirementsof being a second hand dealer,” Muavhasaid.A scale and about 18 kilograms of copper

were confiscated.“As the police, we appeal to the commu-

nity to close themarket for stolen goods bynot buying items they suspectmight be sto-len,” Muavha pleaded.Apart from the confiscation, police also

arrested 11 suspects during searches con-ducted in the cluster.The searches were an attempt to clamp

down on gangs and drugs.The 11 suspects arrested were charged

with crimes relating to drugs, assault,drunk driving and malicious damage toproperty. They were arrested two weeksago.“During this operation a total of 160 li-

tres of alcohol was also confiscated,”Muavha said.

Women valued in Kuils River police cluster

The Kuils River and Delft police clusters’Women’s Network was re-launched atan event held at the Mfuleni police sta-

tion recently, with representatives from sev-en different stations attending the gather-ing.

The seven stations include Belhar, Bell-ville South, Delft, Kleinvlei, Kuils River,Mfuleni and Ravensmead.

Cluster commander Brigadier VincentBeaton addressed the policewomen at themeeting which was held on Tuesday 19 May.

Beaton said the network would play a vitalrole in forming partnerships with externalrole-players.

He also encouraged police members tolook after each other because “we have a du-ty of care”.

“When we take off the uniform, we are alsohuman beings,” Beaton said.

Retaining valueMotivational speaker Pearl Erasmus, rep-

resenting an organisation called I Can, saidwomen have not lost their value.

She demonstrated this by folding a R100note into a creased state and asking the audi-ence about the value of the note. The all-women audience agreed that the R100 note,

although creased, still retains its value.Erasmus praised women in leadership po-

sitions. “If you want to be a leader, be a ser-vant first,” she said.

She also cautioned women to be mindfulabout what say to people. “Words can hurt.Be careful what you say to other people.”

Conversely, she added: “Don’t let the opin-ion of others ruin you.”

Linda Gcwabe, Nedbank’s client educa-tion manager, also addressed the audience.

In her speech Gcwabe stressed the impor-tance to women of compiling a list when go-ing to do their shopping.

Managing moneyWomen (especially mothers), she said,

must draw a definite line between a family’s“needs and wants” in order to save money.

Another issue she addressed was that eachfamily must have a monthly budget andmonitor their income and expenses.

Captain Nomathemba Muavha, championof Women’s Network and final speaker onthe day, encouraged women in the police toempower themselves by applying for seniorpositions.

“It has been noted with concern that wom-en in the Western Cape are not applying for

promotional posts.“We therefore encourage you to apply.“Ensure your form is completed properly.

Read the instructions and comply withthem. We have women who are qualified andwe can do the job,” Muavha said.

A Youth Day event is being planned for 16June at the Eerste River Senior SecondarySchool.

Sergeant Zenobia Fradie, sector com-mander, said the event will be called “Yo-uth in advance, towards transformation –Transforming society towards sustainableand peaceful communities”.

The exclusive event, which will see allproceeds go to the Institute for the Blindin Worcester, is set to take place at theTownhouse Hotel in Cape Town on Wed-nesday 10 June.The Institute for the Blind was establis-

Several green-fingered gardeners who re-cently participated in aCity ofCapeTown-run project focussed on garden mainte-nance have been awarded certificates forcompleting the project.On Tuesday 26 May about 40 partici-

pants from the City’s Expanded PublicWorks Programme (EPWP) received theircertificates of competency for completingaccredited training in garden mainte-nance, said spokesperson Melissa Papier.She said the participants, who complet-

ed a two-week training course at theKhay-elitsha and StrandCity Parks depots, hail-ed from the Kuils River, Eerste River,Mfuleni, Strand and Khayelitsha areas.“This programme was coordinated by

the City’s Expanded Public Works Pro-gramme department in conjunction withCity Parks, as well as the national depart-ment of public works andAgricultural Se-ta,” Papier said.The comprehensive training focused on

applying health and safety principles in

horticulture; controlling weeds in plants;and applying fertilisers to ornamentalplants and landscapes.With the training received, the partici-

pants added to their skill set and employa-bility, and could even consider startingtheir own garden maintenance company,Papier said.The City intends to roll out similar pro-

grammes next year.Suzette Little, mayco member for social

development and early childhooddevelop-ment, commended the participants fortheir devotion and perseverance in com-pleting the training.“Iwould like to congratulate the partici-

pants of the programme on their achieve-ment.“These residents are nowequippedwith

a skill which will enable them to becomemore self-sufficient and financially stable.“This is the first of many such pro-

grammes aimed to assist the most vulner-able members of society,” Little said.

Theirs is a love story spanning six deca-des, with a first dance in the middleof the street on Christmas day to the

melody of “Silent Night”.Add awar, await of five years before they

were allowed to marry, and a life spentfaithfully supporing each other.Peter (95) and Thelma Best have been to-

gether for 65 years. The couple live in theGeorge andAnnie StarckHome inBellville,but before that they spentmost of their livesin Boston, having occupied one of the firstever homes there in 12th Avenuewith theirtwo children.Because Thelma is in the frail care unit

at the home, their story was told by the cou-ple’s daughter Michele Hlozek, from its be-ginning on 31 May 1950. Peter goes to thefrail care unit twice a day during visitinghours to see his beloved wife.“My father visits her every day, twice a

day,”Michele said. “Inpouring rain, hewillnotmiss a visit tomymom. I tell him to stayand rest, Mom will understand, but he in-sists that no, no, ‘I’ll do anything for Mom-my,” Michele says fondly.

Dancing in the streetThe couple have known each other since

Thelma was eight-years-old and Peter 16.Thelma’s family rented one of the housesowned by Peter’s family.He knew of her, but when he was about

17, he went off to fight in Word War II. Hermom and her family then moved away.Her father came back from thewar inAu-

gust 1945, Michele says.He had spent years in a camp inGermany

as a prisoner of war.“My grandmother’s birthday was on

Christmas day,”Michele recalls. “Theyhada very sacred family tradition, where thechildren and family members would get to-gether at midnight and sing Christmas ca-rols, then give my grandmother herbirthday presents.”Michele says on that day, Peter was out

with a girlfriend in Seapoint, getting incre-asingly frustrated as time was slipping byas he worried about missing the family ga-thering.“They took the last train home. He ran all

the way from the girlfriend’s house and gothome at 01:20. He remembers that perfectly.“When he entered, everyone was singing

Christmas carols. My mother was also the-re with her mother. They were, of course,friends of the family.“My dad started singing along. Then he

put his arm around my mother,” Michelesays. “They’ve supported each other sincethen.”Her dad walked her mother’s family ho-

me and before he left, Peter and Thelmastood in the middle of the road slowly dan-cing to “Silent Night”.“My grandmother was furious. She stood

watching them through the window. Shewould not condone their relationship. Atthe time, mymother was only 17, my fatherwas 25. My grandmother wanted them towait to get married.”But love has its own ways.

Love struckIn the five intervening years until their

marriage, a love struck Thelma would sitat the kitchen window waiting for Peter towalk through a patch of trees towards hereverynight.ThecouplemarriedwhenThel-ma turned 21, and 31May 1950was their spe-cial date.They moved into the home in Boston

when Thelma was pregnant with Micheleand her elder brother, Gary, was six-years-old.Between Michele and Gary, the Bests ha-

ve three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.The eldest grandchild is 30 and the youn-

gests great-grandchild is two-years-old.Michele says it was the couple’s faith that

kept them glued together all these years.That, and the fact that they’d alway coun-

ted on each other.“When my dad came back from the war,

he felt so out of touch with normal life, ha-ving lived in a POW camp.“He still gives my mother all the credit

for standing by him and helping him getback into ‘normal’ society – that’s what ma-de them so close,” she says.“Even in pouring rain or freezing cold, he

A day of cooking, baking and laughter was sharedby Wesbank mothers and their children duringa market day held last week.

Its success was such that it is a day planned to becelebrated regularly by mothers belonging to a parentssupport group.

The programme is run by the Centre for Justice andCrime Prevention (CJCP).

AsiaFrieslaar, programmecoordinator, said thepur-pose behind the market day is for mothers who formpart of the parents support group to raise funds. Theydo this by hosting group activities such as this.

“All of them contributed something that they had athome.

“They manage to come up with lots of items to bakeand sell to the community. They sold hot food such assoup and curry bunnies, and sweet treats such as ice-cream, donuts and muffins,” Anthea said.

She said there were lots of goodies to choose from but

things sold out very fast.“It was the group’s very first market day. The funds

they raised will make it possible for them to host work-shops and take part in education excursions that wouldbe beneficial for the entire group.

“The ladieswant to goout onexcursionsoutside theircommunity as they are faced with day to day violenceand often traumatized by gang violence and shooting.

“They do not have the financial means to do some-thing for themselves as the money they receive alwayshas to fill a hole such as providing for their families,resulting in them not being able to go to different pla-ces,” Anthea added.

The parent group gathers on a weekly basis to sup-port, encourage and strengthen each other. Group ses-sions focus on life-skills and parental skills.

They meet at the Wesbank Multi-purpose Centre inSilversands Road.

“We would like to appeal to companies or organisa-tions to assist or donate anything towards the group’snext market day which will be taking place this Fri-day,” said Anthea.

Die duo wat onder die na-me Milan Joan en Die Wolfmusiek maak, is sterk oppad om bekendheid te ver-werf. Liedjies van hul de-buut-kortalbum, Brandendvir jou hitte, is reeds op BokRadio en Bay FM te hoor.

Milan is Zandkloof sestem, terwyl Die Wolf dieskrywer en komponis is.

“Dis nie soos Afrikaansemusiek nie,” vertel Milan.

“Maar tog is die woordeAfrikaans.”

Actionpacked racing is due to thrill spectators at Killarney during the Carnival Race Day onSaturday.

With Saturday’s unique Carnival Ra-ce Day offering more top flight va-riety than has ever been experien-

ced at Killarney, there is tremendous exci-tement among petrol-heads of all ages.

The on-track action includes the Caperound of the All-Africa 3-Hour EnduranceRace Series due to finish after dark, a legof the South African Superkart Champi-onship and round four of the Power Seriesfor cars and motorcycles, sponsored byWingfield Motors.

A parade of VW Beetles in honour of themarque’s 80th anniversary (the prototypePeople’s Car was unveiled in Germany inmid 1935), will take place during the lunchbreak, with the lucky winners of highspeed laps in a racing sports Porsche com-petition to receive their award shortly af-terwards. There will also be a display ofmotorcycle stunt riding.

Static attractions will be an Exotic andSports Car Show that includes several his-toric motorcycles under cover in the spaci-ous new pit block. The popular Engen F1simulators will be available to budding Le-wis Hamiltons in the same building. Outs-ide, a multifaceted fun fair and amusementpark will offer entertainment of a differentnature in the adjacent parking area.

American muscleWhile entries for the 3-Hour Race include

six Porsches, all with two or even threedrivers, the battle up front is more likelyto be fought between a trio of Junos, a Dod-ge Viper and possibly a Panoz Esperante.

The formidable Juno attack is being ledby Western Cape champion Francis Carru-thers, with co-drivers Nick Adcock and De-an McCarroll in an SS3 V6. They will haveto face Craig Jarvis and Marcel Angel inJarvis’s recently acquired brutal V10, 8.4litre Dodge Viper, and an American-sour-ced V8 Panoz Esperante shared by Dave Al-

hadeff, Jonathan Bernstein and Chris Caro-lin.

spectacle of the Superkart races where thedrivers’ backside is a few inches off theground, in these tiny projectiles with no sus-pension and wheels the size of chocolate coa-ted doughnuts. However, they are poweredby 250cc motors with six speed sequentialgearboxes and can hit over 200 km/h on theback straight and lap quicker than the migh-ty Wesbank V8’s of a couple of years ago.

The perennially hard-fought Bold MarineGTi Challenge racing is expected to be oneof the highlights of the programme. YoungMarco Busi and Christopher Swart swappedplaces at the head of the field last month andthey should be the ones to watch.

While 15-year-old Joshua Dolinschek willseek to repeat his recent single seater For-mula Libre victory, the battle in the MutluBatteries Classic Cars and the Cars Unlimi-ted Fine Car events, which includes DaveRowley’s rare, modified VW Beetle, is expec-ted to be much closer.

With the first race to start at 10.00am, theAfrican 3-Hour is the final event and is toget under way at 4.15pm. Admission is R60for adults and R20 for scholars under 16.There is no charge for kids under 12. Ticketsare also available from Computicket.

Raising awareness from Cape Town to KnysnaThe Pedal Power Association (PPA) has

partnered with the Cape 2 Knysna Cy-cle Tour (28 June – 3 July) to raise

awareness of cyclists on our roads that willkeep cyclists safe on our roads.

Participants of the tour will ride in “StayWider of the Rider” cycling jerseys whichsend out a message to motorists – give usspace.

The PPA’s primary role is to protect andempower cyclists. The new “Stay Wider ofthe Rider” campaign launched in Februaryahead of the cycle tour aims to create maxi-mum awareness among all road users, spe-cifically motorists, which will hopefullylead to safer roads for cyclists.

Thousands of people have pledged theirsupport for the safe cycling campaign by rid-ing in a “Stay Wider of the Rider” jersey.

“Visibility is a key issue that contributestowards cycling accidents on our roads. Thenew ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ safe cyclingjerseys are highly visible and include thesimple ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ message,”explains Steve Hayward chairman of thePedal Power Association.

“Riders participating will be visible fromfar away.”

The Cape Town 2 Knysna Tour will rewardcyclists with the most exceptional landscapeen route from Stellenbosch on to Worcester,Montagu, Ladismith, Eight Bells, Georgeand Knysna, arriving on Friday just in timefor participation in the Momentum ArgusKnysna Oyster Festival MTB & Road Races.

The tour kicks off on Sunday 28 June and thepackage price of R6 950 includes accommo-dation, full back up support, all meals, entryto the Knysna MTB or road event, as well asa “Stay Wider of the Rider” cycling jerseyto be worn on tour.

The PPA launched the very successfulCyclists Stay Alive at 1.5 campaign back in2011 which resulted in a one-metre passinglaw which was promulgated in 2013 in theWestern Cape. The PPA will continue tolobby for a 1.5 metre passing distance.
