GOOD NEWSJeremiah zo:7-g lRomans rz:r-z I Matthew :.6:zt-27
When my children were school age, my husband and I decided to use TV
commercials as teaching moments. "What are they trying to sell-you?" we'd ask.
"How are they trying to get you to want it?" Their answers grew as they did.
"They want you to think you'll be cool." "They're showing you that rich people
have this and hope you want to be like them."
I often learned as much as our children did, and I like to think that, as a resulq
we were a little less vulnerable to the techniques. A consumer culture like ours
depends on making people want more and better than they have. To support itmanufacturers must convince us that this cereal is better than that, this present
will fill the void we have experienced, or that our true happiness depends on a
brand name, location, degree, or career.
"Do not conform yourselves to this age," Paul tells us. This age tells us we
cannot be whole until we've achieved or obtained ceftain things.
But Paul reminds us that our goal is not to be formed with (conformation) thisage; rather, it lies in changing our form (transformation) with Christ-actuallychanging our mind and heart so we can know and love God ever more deeply.
What does changing form look like for the Christian? lt looks like loving theenemy, caring for those who have less, gathering at the Eucharistic table, beinggood stewards of resources and, yes, taking up a cross and following Christ-even to death, if necessary
There we willfind our joy and ourfreedom.Mary Katharin e Deeley su ndaybulletin@ liguori.org

dear PADRE
A friend snt me a opy da novqpapo called The CatholicWorker. It was fumded by me of his heroes, Dcrcthy Day.
What can )lrl tdl meabcut her?
Dorothy Day was born in Brooklyn, New York, in1897. She finished high school at age sixteen and joinedthe Socialist Party in 1914 x a college student. She
converted to Catholicism in 1927.
During the Great Depression, Dorothy's commitment tothe poor deepened. In 1932 she met Peter Maurin, withwhom she founded the Catholic Worker Movement. In1933 she created The CathdicWoker newspaper, throughwhich she proclaimed the riglrts of workers to dignityand to fair and honest treatment by industry artd
goyernment, landlords, and neighbors. Her prolabor and
antiwar beliefs caused her to be labeled a Communist, but she was never amember of the Communist Party.
Dorothy's concern for social justice gew---among otherthings, she worked with Cesar Chavez and the UnitedFarm Workers. She was orthodox and pious and had adeep sense of Catholic morality.
She died in 1980. In 2000, Pope John Paul II granted theArchdiocese ofNew York permission to open a cause forDorothy Day's sainthood. That cause, which is stillopen, was endorsed in 2012 by the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops, who called her "a saintfor our time."
