MASS INTENTIONS PARISH WEEKLY CALENDAR
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
ITEM ONE: YOUTH MINISTRY The Generations of Faith Campaign has enabled Sacred Heart, St Anastasia and St Josaphat Parishes to hire a youth minister to help evangelize our young people, inviting them to a fuller participation in the life of our parishes. Brandon Morel, as our new Youth Minister, has begun to do just that. The first step is to identify those young people and adults who are keen to take a leadership role in reaching out in new ways to young people in our community. To that end we’re inviting interested high school students and adults to attend one of the following meetings to find out more about how we plan to evangelize the young people of our parish and community and lead them to encounter Christ and his Church.

RCIA INQUIRY
The RCIA Team and Sacred Heart family invite you, a relative or a friend on a journey to find that special relationship and enrich your life with Christ. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) aims to guide adults to full membership in the Catholic faith. We invite you who have never been baptized, you who have been baptized in a non-Catholic Christian faith or you who were baptized a Catholic but never received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
We invite you to meet together each week to pray, discuss the teachings of our church, and reflect on the call of faith in your life. We invite you, who are interested in joining our faith family and those who wish to complete their sacramental involvement to call Mrs. Georgette Lyons at 781-631-1307. RCIA meetings are held weekly beginning in October, but now is the time to RSVP.
MINISTRY OF CARE Ministry of Care is a support group that assists all who have direct contact with parishioners who are either homebound or residing in nursing homes. We have a number of Eucharistic ministers who take the Eucharist to parishioners who due to age or illness cannot attend mass. For them and for our nursing home visitors this monthly meeting is an opportunity to stay connected with others who ministry in the same way. The group will not meet in July or August, the next meeting will take place on Monday, September 26th, at 1pm in the rectory followed at 2:30pm by the Bakers Meeting. If someone you know is homebound or residing in a nursing home and would like to stay connected to their parish family, please don’t hesitate to contact Sister Kathleen at 718-224-5695.

ARISE
Together in Christ
The ARISE Together in Christ process applies the standard of Christ to all areas of life. It emphasizes people living in good relationship with one another, as they make concrete applications of the Gospel to their life situations. Why not be part of something that promises to have a positive effect on the renewal of the Catholic Church in our diocese? ARISE is open to anyone. It is an opportunity to get to know others from our parish. You may sign up for a group on the weekend of September 17/ 18 or call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718-224-5695 or Mrs. Georgette Lyons at 718-631-1307. Faith sharing groups will begin the week of October 2, 2016.
ATTENTION—VOLUNTEERS!!! Anyone in the parish who volunteers in any position that involves children is required by our Diocese to attend a three hour workshop called, “Protecting All God’s Children.” (VIRTUS) If you need to take the workshop, please go online to www.virtusonline.com to find the listing for the workshops and to register. We are in the Diocese of Brooklyn. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Lyons at 718-631-1307.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
Our first Clow Mass of the school year will take
place on September 25th at the 9:30 mass. “Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word.”
What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. Our CLOW masses have ended for the school year. Watch the bulletin for start up dates in the fall. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718– 224-5695.
CLOW MASS SCHEDULE FOLLOWS: September 25, 2016 February 12, 2017 October 30, 2016 March 19, 2017 November 20, 2016 April 9, 2017 December 18, 2016 May 21, 2017 January 22, 2017 June 11, 2017

The first meeting of the school year will be held on Tuesday, October 4th at 10am, in the Parish Center. Please enter by main doors of school on 38th Avenue. For information, please call Mrs. Georgette Lyons at 718-631-1307.
FAMILY MASS
At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children’s readings are used. Our Parish Children’s Choir, performs
at Family Mass. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. Our Family Mass program has ended for the school year, masses will resume in the fall. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at 718-631-1307.
The first family mass for the school year will
take place on September 18th at 9:30
Family Mass schedule is as follows: October 2nd, October 16th, November 6th,
December 4th. For 2017, January 8th, February 5th, March 5th, April 2nd, May 7th & June 4th.

CONCERN FOR THE POOR
It’s time for global initiatives, and this will affect how we treat the poor.
Virtually all climate scientists are making it plain that the time for drastic action on the environment is now, and they caution that it may already be too late to stop some of the damage. Some people reject the scientific consensus and say we need more time to study the problem. Pope Francis says that attempts to discredit calls for radical change come from the same forces that keep the world from addressing the issue of global poverty. Poverty has many faces—neglect of nature leads to neglect of humanity. He urges us not to continue our blindness but begin to reach out in love and compassion to the poor. PONDER Who and where are the poor where I live? PRAY God of creation, break the hardness of my heart so that I may hear the cries of the poor and then do more to work on their behalf.
2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION As we live out this Jubilee Year of Mercy and the United States enters into the 2016 election season, Americans face a myriad of choices between competing visions for our nation’s future. As Catholics, we are called by our faith to engage in this election. Pope Francis says that “a good Catholic meddles in politics, offering the best of one’s self so that those who govern can govern well.” Join us for a timely presentation and discussion with Kevin Ahern, PhD, assistant professor of religious studies at Manhattan College, as he addresses the subject:
