On Tuesday 26th July students studying Food Technology

visited Coffee School in Sydney. They learnt to make a

short black, long black, latte, flat white, macchiato,

cappuccino, and hot chocolate. They made coffees all

day and learnt how to pour a shot of coffee correctly and

how to froth milk. Finally, they learnt Latte Art. The trainer,

Alan, commented on how excellent the students were

behavior-wise and how quickly they picked up the art of

coffee-making. These students did their school proud!!!

Creative Stars of the MonthCreative Stars of the Month Congratulations to

Performing Arts Teachers

Our creative super starts this week are Miss Bandy, Mrs Goodwin, Mrs Carpenter, Miss Jones, Mr Horton and Mr

Chittick.

These dedicated teachers directed Tumbi Umbi students in their State performance

at the 2011 Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.

These teachers have gone above and beyond to give all these talented students

the opportunity to celebrate and show-case their outstanding talents and team-

work.

An outstanding achievement for our campus, the teachers, and especially the students.

The unusual monochrome image shown is called a QR Code. You may have seen it on advertisements and Real Estate brochures. It is read on your phone by a QR reader. App Store or Android Market has free QR readers. This QR code is a direct hyperlink to our Campus Website. If you don‘t have a QR reader, download the app and give it a try. It is far easier than remembering a web address. App Store has a DEC app called School A-Z. It‘s quite informative indeed. Mr Ross Johnson

PDHPE intern report During term 3, PD/H/PE students from each year group have successfully completed a dance unit, learning a range of dances from the Mambo to the Heel-Toe Polka to the Cha-Cha-Cha. They are currently developing and refining their skills in a Football Unit with each year focusing on a va-riety of games including OZ-tag, AFL, Touch Football, Flag Football and Soccer. In theory lessons, students are proving their knowledge and understanding of various topics taught this term, through the completion of a writing task. This task also tests student literacy skills. As interns, we have enjoyed the opportunity to work along side the great staff and students of Tumbi

Umbi Campus. We are very impressed with the quality of the dances produced, which were a result of

the students‘ hard work and eagerness to participate. Yrear7 students were exceptional in this unit as they added their own

creative panache to the original style of dances learnt. Well done!

The debating excursion to the University of Sydney, was a success and such a great experience for the students. They loved walking into the university‘s Great Hall dubbing it ―Hogwarts‖. After many references to Gryfnndore and Harry Potter, and singing the theme song along the footpath, we watched a fiercely contested debate for Years 11/12 in the Premier‘s Debating Challenge.

Smith Hill High School and Northern Beaches Secondary College-Many Campus, gave us an enthusiastic debate on the topic; ‗The death of Osama Bin Laden has aided world peace‘. Smith Hill won the coveted Hume Barbor Trophy for the 6th year in a row and proved to be a formidable force.

Our students watched on in awe and took away with them some valuable insights into the debating scene. Conveniently, the Institute of Teachers representative was there giving out pamphlets for teaching as a career and our Tumbi students took them. We may see Clayton and Ginny as teachers in the future!

Rock Eisteddfod was amazing! It‘s hard to fathom exactly how much work goes into the performance between staff,

students and parents, but you seem to forget the hard work in preparation when you actually get there! It is MASSIVE!

Everyone feels like a ‗star‘!

The backstage crew, led by Mr Horton and Mr Chittick, were outstanding during rehearsals and performance!! Students from all walks of life worked as a team and got the job done

with ease. Mr Horton and Mr Chittick also got their chance to dance on stage during the day.

The performers were also on the money! Their synchronicity was spot on, as too was their enthusiasm and showmanship. In addition, Ms Bandy, Ms Goodwin, Ms Carpenter and Ms Jones carved up the stage during the day - I‘m pretty sure

the students will want to use their moves for next years production!

THANKYOU to all the teachers that made the performance

happen.

A very rewarding experience for all!!

Well done and congratulations!

The annual College SLC Camp Excursion took place in Week 7 of this term, Wednesday 31st August

to Friday 2nd

September. The 13 students from our Campus ranged from Year 7-10. The students involved were Bradley, Jake, Jamie, Maddison, Shelby, Tony, Michael, Steve, Logan, Emily-Kate,

Dillion, Mitchell and Clayton.

All students were extremely responsible and had a great experience, with lots of adventure, positive risk taking and relationship building. They formed great new friendships with Berkeley Vale Campus student

leaders, faced their fears, challenged themselves physically and mentally, as well as enhancing their teamwork and leadership abilities through communication and problem solving activities.

We look forward to visiting the Active Education - Morisset Centre again with the newly elected

SLC students for 2012.

Most Year 9 and 10 Science classes will sit Formal Exams in Week 10 Term 3. Year 7 and 8 will sit for their Yearly exams in class early in Term 4. Students should be busy with revision to ensure they do their best. Teachers have set previous SC exams, accessed on the BOS website, to prepare students for this exam. Please encourage your child to properly prepare for their final exams.

Homework Centre is a very useful aid for students needing some individual attention, (especially for Year 10 revision for the School Certificate) and is available to all years. This resource can also be used by students seeking assistance with assignments and homework.

The science department have organised a number of excursions during this Term. Sixty

Year 10 students had the opportunity of seeing ―Planet of the Apes‖ as part of their unit

on evolution; 250 students attended the World Ocean Day presented by George Evatt;

while 110 Year 7 students had the ―Snake Tails‖ incursion to assist their understanding

of adaptations of living things.

Mr Steve Davidson (Head Teacher Science)

Forty five boys contested the College Cup Trophy at Berkeley Vale this week. The boys worked hard to have two extremely successful wins and retain the College Cups in the U14‘s and U16‘s.

The U14‘s ended up being victorious 56-19 in what was a close first 15 minutes, the class of the Tumbi boys showing through and ended up running away with the game. Starring performers in the game were Michael, Eathan, Jayden and Ryan, with honourable mention to our flying centre Matena.

The U16‘s found themselves in a tighter tussle before finally displaying why they have been so successful throughout the year winning 36-10. The outstanding performers in the match were Nathan (who through a ball that would have left Benji Marshall staring in awe), Joel (you would have fallen over watching him play if you knew he‘d never played contact sport in his life) and the big unit Christian. Again honourable mentions to Nathan, Jack and Liam.

Both teams and campuses played the games in amazing spirits and their behaviour is to be congratulated.

Mr Scott Howard

Tumbi Umbi Campus took out first place in the Take 3 Art Competition.

Our piece was a wonderful display of creativity through recycling.

Tumbi Talks - Term 3 - Week 9

Lateness can be a problem for many school. "So what if my child is sometimes late for school - does it matter that much?"

Take a few seconds to read this and see what you think! School is usually the first place where children are made aware of the importance of regular timekeeping. Arriving early will boost your child's confidence for the day, and set them in the right frame of mind for learning and achievement.

If a child arrives late the whole class is disrupted and the teacher has to repeat the same things over and over again-losing valuable teaching time or the child completely misses out on information.eg daily student notices.

Punctuality and good attendance will always be important—at school now and later at work.

Help to make sure your child is given a good start in life by coming to school regularly and on time.

\

Why are children late for school?

Overslept

Late night

School clothes unprepared

Preparing breakfast for themselves or others

Dawdling on the way to school

Calling for friends

Stopping off at the shops

Missed the bus

Waiting for parents to drive them

Now for the legal bit:

If your child is late after the 8:00am bell has rung, it is classed as a partial absence and as such: The law in NSW places the responsibility on parents to ensure their child is enrolled at a government or non-government school and attends the school when teaching is provided (or is registered for home schooling). Under Section 22 of the Education Act 1990 parents have a legal duty to ensure their school-aged children attend school. The NSW Department of Education and Communities has developed strategies to support all government school students‘ regular attendance at school.

However, if the reasons given for your child's irregular school attendance are not satisfactory, then the NSW Department of Education and Communities may take legal proceedings against you for failure to comply with the Law. This may result in a court case with fines up to $11,000.

Considering all this - Does it matter?

Wow!! What a busy Term 3 it has been as always. So many exciting things happening with our students shining all the time!

Students from Irwin Support Class performed for the very first time at the Tumbi Panics night. Students wrote their own scripts, rehearsed regularly at school and at home (thankyou parents!), found/bought/made their own costumes and supported one another throughout the night. Samual and Brooke shone in their performance of the World‘s Worst Singer, Tony, Sami and Shane had us in stiches throughout the World‘s Worst Joke Teller performance, Stephen and Taylah had us reaching for tissues in The World‘s Greatest Sneezer and Cody was a star as he introduced our performances. Take a bow Irwin class – we look forward to next year‘s performance!

Support unit students, along with our resident artist Eliane Bertault and class teachers, have been working busily away on the big art project happening in our end of the school. Art works are almost all up now, with the official unveiling happening at our Open afternoon next week!

Mrs Torpy has been working away organising the Year 10 Graduation for students in the support unit. This night is shaping up to be a very special occasion. Keep an eye out for the invitations coming home at the start of Term 4.

Welcome back Nick who has been away on beaches of Hawaii. We enjoyed receiving your email, photos and presents on your return to school. We look forward to seeing more photos soon!

Dates to remember!
