Tumbi Talks - Term 2 - Week 5

Well it has been a busy few weeks for English students and teachers alike!!! Congratulations to Sara-Jayne Liedberg and Clayton Hamilton who represented the school in the Bendigo Bank Public Speaking Competition. They were both outstanding and their hard work paid off with Clayton making it to the finals and Sara-Jayne going all the way through to the grand final. A special thanks to Mrs Carpenter and Mrs Cox for all their hard work in preparing students for this event. Congratulations also to Miss Boulting and the debating teams. Our senior team has made it through to the next round and the juniors have debated well against Gosford High School. A further congratulations goes to all the students who have been invited to take part in the 2011 ICAS English competition and the Newcastle Herald Writing competition. Your efforts in English are commendable. Still to come is the Year 7 excursion to the Jewish Museum to meet famous author Jackie French. This is sure to be a great learning experience that will be lasting. Hope you all have a safe and happy Ryan Barron (Relieving Head Teacher English)

Clayton Hamilton and Sara-Jayne Liedberg represented the school in the Finals of the Bendigo Bank Public Speaking Competition. Both students were outstanding and it is my pleasure to inform you that Sara-Jayne was one of four successful contestants in the Junior Division who went through to the Grand Final which was held on Tuesday 7th June, at the Mingara Recreation Club. Clayton represented our Campus in the Senior Division. He was up against very tough competition and it is worth noting that of the eight contestants only four went through to the Grand Final and all of these were Year 11 and 12 students. Clayton put on a fantastic performance and did both himself and the campus proud. As the adjudicators said, there were no losers on the night only winners. Once again, Clayton asked me to pass on his thanks to all the teachers who supported him throughout the competition. A special thanks to staff members who supported and watched each competition round. Congratulations to both Sara-Jayne and Clayton for their fantastic effort and achievements, and a huge thankyou to Ms Carpenter for her invaluable support and expertise. Mrs Cox

PASS Hike

Congratulations to the Year 10 PASS hikers who have completed an epic adventure deep into the valleys of the Blue Mountains. The hike begins with a very early morning train ride, from Tuggerah Station to the Blue Mountains, followed by a day full of fun and adventure to the Acacia Flats camping site. Upon arrival the students needed to work together to unpack their backpacks, set up their tents and bedding and cook themselves dinner. After a sometimes sleepless night, due to others snoring or the simple fact that was is so cold, students had to cook themselves breakfast, clean up, pack up and set out for the trip back. Along the way, students are treated to some amazing scenery including numerous waterfalls, beautiful flora and an amazing sunset against the mountain walls. Luckily the beauty of the Blue Mountains takes away the pain and struggle that the students go through in hiking 20+ kilometres of undulating tracks. The stories from the hike will live for many years and they are able to share these stories with students from past years and future years. Although, initially they talk of the toughness of the hike, later they realise how this excursion has changed them for the best and tested their fortitude.

SEPEP unit The SEPEP unit is up and running with finals only a matter of days away. All students are showing excellent skills in organisation, participation and team work.

Good luck to the finalists. Bay to Bay Fun Run Congratulations to the PDHPE faculty who have had a strong showing in the Bay to Bay Fun Run. Many staff and students from Tumbi Umbi Campus took part and showed some great talent; however, first and second place (from our campus) came from the talented PDHPE staff with times close to the 50 minute mark.

The challenge is out there for other faculties for next year - even if you walk! Mr Shane Knight

Year 10 Child Studies students have been very busy during Term 1 and 2 of this year. They prepared a lesson for pre-school aged children. This involved writing a lesson plan, making a craft activity, reading a children’s book to their class, playing an indoor game and singing a children’s song or nursery rhyme.

During Term 2, the students carried out work experience in a Childcare Centre of their choice. They really enjoyed the experience and learnt so much about working in the Childcare Industry as a career.

Here are a few of the wonderful comments that the Childcare Centre teachers made about out talented students:

Rhiannon : “The best work experience student we have ever had. We would love to have her back again. Rhiannon dis-plays maturity beyond her years. She would make an amaz-ing educator.”

Jessie : “Jessie would be an asset to any pre-school. She loves the children and showed initiative in all tasks. She is quietly confident and a great communicator.”

Vanessa : “Vanessa has shown a great amount of enthusi-asm during her time with us. It has been a pleasure to have her working with us.”

The photos below are of Kimberely ’s lesson on “Rainbows” and Karla’s lesson on “Mummies and Daddies”.

As another busy, hardworking, eventful and VERY WET term comes to end, here is a snapshot of what we have been up to in the support unit:

Thankyou to the wonderful Mrs Izzard who recently organised a fun 'incursion' to the Sydney Museum. What is an incursion? Students went to our Connected Classroom and were connected to the Sydney Museum via live video stream, where we learnt a lot about Archaeology and Indigenous sites around Australia. Students asked lots of interesting questions and saw some fascinating artefacts.

Emmett class and the very creative Mrs Livingston have been working hard on their Rainforest artworks. Student have been studying the layers of the rainforest, putting their knowledge into artworks which will soon be hung in the classroom. What a wonderful class to work in!

Artworks have also started as part of our 'Beautifying B Block' program. Our new resident artist, Eliane Berthault, is working with students from Emmett and Irwin class to create some eye catching and colourful artworks. Parents, stay tuned for the official unveiling of these artworks in Term 3.

Thankyou to all Year 10 students and their parents for their cooperation and enthusiasm with our Individual Transition Plan Meetings, held Monday 20th and Monday 27th. Some very exciting times ahead for our Year 10's. Congratulations to Tom, Michael, Daniel, Neville, Samual and Brooke who all received Excellence Awards at this weeks special Awards Ceremony. You continue to do wonderful things each day. Well done!

Don't Forget!!

Support Unit Camp has been rescheduled. We are now going to the Challenge Ranch on Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th of June and Friday 1st July. Fingers and toes crossed for sunshine on the day! Swimming lessons will commence in Term 3 from Monday 25th July. A note to come home soon. Thankyou parents, carers and students for your cooperation this term. See you next Wednesday for the camp - Take 2!

DID YOU KNOW???.............

Attendance Information Every day counts in your child's education! Every day a student misses school, he/she gets more than two days behind his/her peers. . Appointments It is a good idea to send your child to school for at least part of the day when they have an appointment. Please send your child with a note to the office attendance window before school. Please ensure that the following things are included on the note: The students first and second name clearly

printed on the note Roll Call class The current date The year that the student is in this year

( 7, 8, 9 or 10 ) A strong reason explaining the need for an Early

Leavers Pass If these things are present on the note, our office

ladies will gladly write an Early Leavers Pass for the appointment which the student may collect just before they depart the school grounds.

Sample of notes are available to view under
