(pg 85) WORK IS NOT A PUNISHMENT. What is the meaning of work? Why do we go to work? Some would argue, “Because we have to!” and others would say, “To make money.” But both would be wrong. In truth, you don’t have to do anything. Nobody can make you do anything. At some level, we choose to go to work. And contrary to the overwhelmingly popular view that we work to make money, making money is actually the secondary purpose for work. The primary meaning, pur-pose, and value of work is that when we work hard and well, when we pay attention to the details of our work, we develop character and virtue. By working hard, I de-velop the virtues of perseverance and fortitude; by pay-ing attention to the details of my work, I develop pa-tience and responsibility; and by working well, I develop diligence. HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God’s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ’s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. The virgin felt so encouraged and fortified by this vision that she was emboldened that same day to call her parents and brothers to-gether and speak to them as follows: “For a long time you have been talking amongst yourselves and planning to marry me off to some mortal, corruptible man, as you have told me; and th ough I cordially detest the idea, as you must have been able to see from a number of signs I have given you, neverthe-less I have kept quiet until now from the feel-ing of reverence that God commands us to show our parents. But now the time for keeping quiet is over, and I must tell you plainly what is in my heart and what my real intentions are. They did not come to me to-day; on the contrary, I have had them ever since I was a child, and they have only grown stronger with the passage of time. You must know then that when I was quite a little girl I made a vow of virginity to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world, and his most glorious Mother; and I did not do this childishly, but after long reflection and inten-tionally, I promised Him that I would never marry anyone but Him through all eternity. LOS ABRAZÓ Y LOS BENDIJO Hoy Jesús recalca que el Reino de Dios pertenece a los que son como los niños. Son confiados, tiernos y tienen el corazón abierto al amor. Se alegran cuando se dan cuenta del amor que Dios siente por ellos y están más que dispuestos a retribuir ese amor. Este es el modelo que Jesús nos presenta si queremos recibir el Reino de Dios. Debemos abrir el corazón y amar. Debemos bajar la guardia, sin importar por qué la hayamos montado, y recibir con alegría el amor que Cristo siente por nosotros. Es imposible que hagamos esto sin ayuda. Sólo la gracia de Dios nos permitirá hacerlo y esa gracia se nos concede generosamente y sin condiciones. Lo único que debemos hacer es aceptarla. Parents, family members, teachers, clergy and all who work with or are responsible for the care of chil-dren need to remember that speaking up is one of the most important things they can do to protect not just their own children, but all children. Voicing your con-cerns is critical to protecting God’s children. Any inci-dent of abuse or misconduct should be immediately reported.
