Dale Ferwerda SPRINGFIELD — Dale Oliver Ferwerda, 90, of Springfield passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall. Funeral serv- ices will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield with burial in the Springfield Ceme- tery, rural Springfield, with mili- tary honors. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 6, 2012 from 2 to 7 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. which will include a devo- tional and prayer. Dale was born May 9, 1921, in rural Springfield to Martin and Sarah (Oliver) Ferwerda. Dale was the oldest of ten children. He attended Hitt Country School for eight years and graduated from Springfield High School in 1939. After graduation, he went to Iowa with several other young men from the area to find work. On October 22, 1942, Dale married Henrietta Van Roekel in Dakota City, NB. Two weeks later he entered the military service serving in the US Army. He spent 39 months as an MP attaining the rank of SGT. After discharge from the Army, Dale and Henrietta re- turned to Iowa to farm. Three children were born to Dale and Henrietta. On January 26, 1946, Dale made his Profession of Faith in the First Reformed Church of Denver, CO. He has served for many years as Sunday School teacher, Trustee, and Elder in the churches he attended. He has been active in the Gideons and American Legion both in Iowa and South Dakota. At the age of 37, Dale returned to college for two years at North- western Jr. College in Orange City, IA, and then attended and graduated with a B.A. from West- mar College, Lemars, IA. He taught school for several years, then returned to farming near Springfield, SD. He also enjoyed carpenter work and electrical wiring. Dale entered the Assisted Liv- ing in Springfield in Feb, 2007, and moved to the Good Samari- tan Home in Tyndall in March, 2011. He resided there until his death. Dale is survived by his son Harlan of Springfield, daughters Donna (Dave) Koop of Rapid City and Bev (Kenn) Rupp of Spring- field; four brothers, Gene of Med- ford, NJ, Layton (Helen) of Yankton; Alvin (Avis) of Winner; and Laddie (Mary) of Centerville SD; two sisters, Amy (Gale) Scholl, Scotland, and Carol (Jim) Lukkes of Avon, SD, 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 6 great- great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Henrietta, his parents, two grandsons, Kai Rupp and Wayne Koop, his daughter-in- law, Carol Ferwerda; three broth- ers, Arnold, Noel, and Merle, sisters-in-law Dorothy Ferwerda and Luetta Ferwerda. She attended school in Herreid where she graduated from Herreid High School in 1968. Linda lived in Yankton where she worked at Phinney’s Café for sev- eral years. She also worked at the Yankton Area Adjustment Training Center. Linda enjoyed crafts, quilting, sewing, pottery, shopping, traveling and attend- ing concerts. Linda is survived by her mother, Dorothy of Herreid, SD, four brothers and two sisters-in- law, John & Pam Klaudt, Black Hawk, SD, Peter Klaudt, Pollock, SD, Paul and Maureen Klaudt, Montrose, SD and Thomas Klaudt, Herreid, SD, two nieces, Ashley Klaudt and Laura Klaudt and four nephews, J. Kappel, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 5, 2012. Paul, a happy friend to all, was born June 30, 1919, near Lesterville, S.D., to Raymond J. and Alice (Wagner) Kappel. Paul grew up on the family farm and attended Lesterville High School. He appropriately was the humor editor for the school paper the “Roosevelt Skits.” He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably for eight years including meritorious serv- ice in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II. He was a Technical Sergeant and acted as a platoon leader for Company B, 379th Regiment, of the 95th Infantry Division. During the war he participated in three major campaigns including Metz, Ruhr, and Northern Germany. Paul received a Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster for his heroic ef- forts. He also received a Purple Heart for being wounded in com- bat after the Battle of Saar- lautern. He later received the French Legion of Honor Medal for his efforts in liberating France. Paul was an avid reader and collector. He enjoyed reading, writing and reciting poetry. He also enjoyed writing short sto- ries and had several articles pub- lished. Paul was an avid conversationalist and story teller. He had the ability to bring laughter and joy to his family and friends over the years. Paul en- joyed his annual pilgrimages to South Dakota to visit family and friends. He was truly a friend to anyone and an enemy to none. Paul was an active member of many clubs and organizations. He was a past post commander of the local chapter of the Dis- abled American Veterans. He served as the past post com- mander for the local chapter of the Military Order of Purple Heart. He also was a life-long member of the Veterans of For- eign Wars. Paul was the last surviving member of his parents’ family. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Renee Waugh of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a brother, Jean of Austin, Texas; a brother, Raphael of Yankton, S.D.; a brother, Patrick of Yankton, S.D.; and a sister, Roseanne Murray of Wichita, Kan. Those left to cherish his mem- ory are his loving wife, Millie of Green Bay; a sister-in-law, Rose- mary Michalec of Green Bay; and many nieces and nephews. He had a close relationship with his best friend, Tom Fruit of Pulaski; and a nephew, Bob Kappel of Sioux Falls, S.D. Friends may call at St. Wille- brord Catholic Church, 209 S. Menards Opening In Yankton Not Yet Set BY NATHAN JOHNSON [email protected] While the Menards Mega Store is set to open in Yankton this spring, an exact date has not been established yet, according to a spokesman for the home improvement retailer. Jeff Abbott said the company is promoting the spring 2012 opening until a more precise date is pinned down. “We appreciate all the loyal Menards guests in the Yankton area who have driven many miles to shop in our stores in Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Sioux City for many years,” he stated in an email to the Press & Dakotan. “This beautiful new store is being built in our largest format with several great departments, a full-service lum- beryard, fabulous displays and a beautiful garden center. Building this new store is another example of our strong commitment to provide the best in home improvement goods and services in this region.” Construction on the facility began last summer. The City of Yankton created a tax-increment finance district to help with the infrastructure needs for the development on the property northeast of the Highway 81 and 31st Street intersection. Isaac Nathaniel Thomp- son was born on March 11, 2007 in Yankton, SD and went home to be with Jesus after a courageous bat- tle with JMML. He was diagnosed on December 23, 2011 and was hospitalized for the past 10 weeks starting at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD and was then air- lifted to Amplatz Children’s Hos- pital at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He received a bone marrow transplant, receiving his sister Emily’s bone marrow, on Febru- ary 22, 2012 and had begun en- grafting new healthy white cells. Our sweet boy died 9 days be- fore his 5th birthday when the disease was too difficult for him to fight any longer. There never was a more loved nor lovable little boy than our precious Isaac. His smile could lighten up any room. He had a dry wit that brought laughter to his entire family. He loved Jesus and enjoyed hear- ing stories about Him from his family, at Sunday School and at AWANA. He so enjoyed praising Jesus through his singing. Pesticide Applicator Certification Training SetBROOKINGS — Private Pesticide Applicator Certification/Recertifi-

cation Training is wrapping up in South Dakota with eleven trainingsessions remaining across the state. A class will be held in Yankton at9 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at JoDeans. Registration begins at 8:30a.m.

Who needs to be certified or recertified as a Private Pesticide Appli-cator? If you plan to apply any pesticides to an agriculture commodityworth $ 1,000 or more, you need to be certified. It does not matterwhat pesticide you apply (herbicide, insecticide, or fungicide, etc.)you need to be certified as a Private Applicator.

Individuals have three options to get certified. You many attend a 3-hour recertification class at any certification site, they may stop by atyour local Extension Office or Regional Extension Center and pick-upthe materials to complete the open-book home-study exam, or theymay take the Private Applicator exam on-line at the Department ofAgriculture’s website: http://apps.sd.gov/doa/pwt/.

Girl Scout Time-Capsule Event March 12In 2007, Girl Scouts from Yankton, Freeman, Irene and Lesterville

sealed a time capsule to be opened on this, the 100th Anniversary ofGirl Scouts.

All current & former Girl Scouts who contributed to the time cap-sule are invited to Peace Presbyterian Church, 206 E 31st St., Yankton,at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, as the time capsule is opened to cele-brate the organization’s centennial.

The organization was founded by Juliette Gordon Lowe in Sa-vannah, Ga., on March 12, 1912.

Menards Opening InYankton Not Yet Set

While the Menards Mega Store is set to open in Yankton thisspring, an exact date has not been established yet, according to aspokesman for the home improvement retailer.

Jeff Abbott said the company is promoting the spring 2012opening until a more precise date is pinned down.

“We appreciate all the loyal Menards guests in the Yankton areawho have driven many miles to shop in our stores in Mitchell,Sioux Falls and Sioux City for many years,” he stated in an email tothe Press & Dakotan. “This beautiful new store is being built in ourlargest format with several great departments, a full-service lum-beryard, fabulous displays and a beautiful garden center. Buildingthis new store is another example of our strong commitment toprovide the best in home improvement goods and services in thisregion.”

Construction on the facility began last summer.The City of Yankton created a tax-increment finance district to

help with the infrastructure needs for the development on theproperty northeast of the Highway 81 and 31st Street intersection.

Menards operates 264 home improvement stores across theGreat Plains and Midwest.
