Ferwerda, 90, of Springfieldpassed away Saturday, March 3,2012, at St.Michael’s Hospitalin Tyndall.

Funeral serv-ices will be heldWednesday, March7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m.at the EmmanuelReformed Churchin Springfield withburial in theSpringfield Ceme-tery, rural Springfield, with mili-tary honors.

Visitation will be Tuesday,March 6, 2012 from 2 to 7 PM atthe Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Homein Springfield with the familypresent from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m. which will include a devo-tional and prayer.

Dale was born May 9, 1921, inrural Springfield to Martin andSarah (Oliver) Ferwerda. Dalewas the oldest of ten children. Heattended Hitt Country School foreight years and graduated fromSpringfield High School in 1939.After graduation, he went to Iowawith several other young menfrom the area to find work.

On October 22, 1942, Dalemarried Henrietta Van Roekel inDakota City, NB. Two weeks laterhe entered the military serviceserving in the US Army. He spent39 months as an MP attaining therank of SGT. After discharge fromthe Army, Dale and Henrietta re-turned to Iowa to farm. Threechildren were born to Dale andHenrietta.

On January 26, 1946, Dalemade his Profession of Faith inthe First Reformed Church ofDenver, CO. He has served formany years as Sunday Schoolteacher, Trustee, and Elder in thechurches he attended. He hasbeen active in the Gideons andAmerican Legion both in Iowaand South Dakota.

At the age of 37, Dale returnedto college for two years at North-western Jr. College in OrangeCity, IA, and then attended andgraduated with a B.A. from West-mar College, Lemars, IA. Hetaught school for several years,then returned to farming nearSpringfield, SD. He also enjoyedcarpenter work and electricalwiring.

Dale entered the Assisted Liv-ing in Springfield in Feb, 2007,and moved to the Good Samari-tan Home in Tyndall in March,2011. He resided there until hisdeath.

Dale is survived by his sonHarlan of Springfield, daughtersDonna (Dave) Koop of Rapid Cityand Bev (Kenn) Rupp of Spring-field; four brothers, Gene of Med-ford, NJ, Layton (Helen) ofYankton; Alvin (Avis) of Winner;and Laddie (Mary) of CentervilleSD; two sisters, Amy (Gale) Scholl,Scotland, and Carol (Jim) Lukkesof Avon, SD, 8 grandchildren, 14great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death byhis wife of 63 years, Henrietta, hisparents, two grandsons, Kai Ruppand Wayne Koop, his daughter-in-law, Carol Ferwerda; three broth-ers, Arnold, Noel, and Merle,sisters-in-law Dorothy Ferwerdaand Luetta Ferwerda.

ton, SD, died March 1, 2012 atAvera Sacred Heart Hospital,Yankton, SD.

Linda was born January 3,1949 in Eureka, SD, the daughterof Melvin and Dorothy (Rossow)Klaudt. She attended school inHerreid where she graduatedfrom Herreid High School in 1968.Linda lived in Yankton where sheworked at Phinney’s Café for sev-eral years. She also worked atthe Yankton Area AdjustmentTraining Center. Linda enjoyedcrafts, quilting, sewing, pottery,shopping, traveling and attend-ing concerts.

Linda is survived by hermother, Dorothy of Herreid, SD,four brothers and two sisters-in-law, John & Pam Klaudt, BlackHawk, SD, Peter Klaudt, Pollock,SD, Paul and Maureen Klaudt,Montrose, SD and ThomasKlaudt, Herreid, SD, two nieces,Ashley Klaudt and Laura Klaudtand four nephews, J. B. Klaudt,Jesse Klaudt, Michael Klaudt andK.C. Dusheneaux.

She was preceded in death byher father, Melvin.

The family would like to thankthe staff of ABS “Ability Building

Services” in Yankton for theirlove and support shown to Lindathroughout the years.

Paul KappelPaul H. Kappel, 92, went home

to be with the Lord on Monday,March 5, 2012.

Paul, a happy friend to all,was born June 30, 1919, nearLesterville, S.D., to Raymond J.and Alice (Wagner) Kappel. Paulgrew up on the family farm andattended Lesterville High School.He appropriately was the humoreditor for the school paper the“Roosevelt Skits.”

He enlisted in the U.S. Armyand served honorably for eightyears including meritorious serv-ice in the European Theatre ofOperations during World War II.He was a Technical Sergeant andacted as a platoon leader forCompany B, 379th Regiment, ofthe 95th Infantry Division. Duringthe war he participated in threemajor campaigns including Metz,Ruhr, and Northern Germany.Paul received a Bronze Star andOak Leaf Cluster for his heroic ef-forts. He also received a PurpleHeart for being wounded in com-bat after the Battle of Saar-lautern. He later received theFrench Legion of Honor Medalfor his efforts in liberatingFrance.

Paul was an avid reader andcollector. He enjoyed reading,writing and reciting poetry. Healso enjoyed writing short sto-ries and had several articles pub-lished. Paul was an avidconversationalist and storyteller. He had the ability to bringlaughter and joy to his family andfriends over the years. Paul en-joyed his annual pilgrimages toSouth Dakota to visit family andfriends. He was truly a friend toanyone and an enemy to none.

Paul was an active member ofmany clubs and organizations.He was a past post commanderof the local chapter of the Dis-abled American Veterans. He

served as the past post com-mander for the local chapter ofthe Military Order of PurpleHeart. He also was a life-longmember of the Veterans of For-eign Wars.

Paul was the last survivingmember of his parents’ family. Hewas preceded in death by hisparents; a sister, Renee Waugh ofCouncil Bluffs, Iowa; a brother,Jean of Austin, Texas; a brother,Raphael of Yankton, S.D.; abrother, Patrick of Yankton, S.D.;and a sister, Roseanne Murray ofWichita, Kan.

Those left to cherish his mem-ory are his loving wife, Millie ofGreen Bay; a sister-in-law, Rose-mary Michalec of Green Bay; andmany nieces and nephews. Hehad a close relationship with hisbest friend, Tom Fruit of Pulaski;and a nephew, Bob Kappel ofSioux Falls, S.D.

Friends may call at St. Wille-brord Catholic Church, 209 S.Adams St., from 9 to 10:30 a.m.Thursday. The Mass of ChristianBurial will be celebrated at 10:30a.m. Thursday at the church withthe Rev. Pesticide Applicator Certification Training SetBROOKINGS — Private Pesticide Applicator Certification/Recertifi-

cation Training is wrapping up in South Dakota with eleven trainingsessions remaining across the state. A class will be held in Yankton at9 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at JoDeans. Registration begins at 8:30a.m.

Who needs to be certified or recertified as a Private Pesticide Appli-cator? If you plan to apply any pesticides to an agriculture commodityworth $ 1,000 or more, you need to be certified. It does not matterwhat pesticide you apply (herbicide, insecticide, or fungicide, etc.)you need to be certified as a Private Applicator.

Individuals have three options to get certified. You many attend a 3-hour recertification class at any certification site, they may stop by atyour local Extension Office or Regional Extension Center and pick-upthe materials to complete the open-book home-study exam, or theymay take the Private Applicator exam on-line at the Department ofAgriculture’s website: http://apps.sd.gov/doa/pwt/.

SAC Schedule Changes During TournamentDue to the State Special Olympics basketball tournament being

held at the Summit Activities Center, there will not be open swim in theafternoon on Friday, March 9. The Yankton Optimist Club will be spon-soring a free swim and gym on Friday, March 9, from 6:30-9:30 p.m.Come on out and make a splash with your classmates and enjoy thispopular activity.

panding its annual Home Show this year to include non-constructionindustry vendors.

A limited number of booths are being made available to local or re-gional businesses, services or organizations that would like to be ex-posed to the hundreds of ready-to-act visitors that attend the showeach year.

This is the first year the additional spaces are being made availableas part of the show.

Girl Scout Time-Capsule Event March 12In 2007, Girl Scouts from Yankton, Freeman, Irene and Lesterville

sealed a time capsule to be opened on this, the 100th Anniversary ofGirl Scouts.

All current & former Girl Scouts who contributed to the time cap-sule are invited to Peace Presbyterian Church, 206 E 31st St., Yankton,at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, as the time capsule is opened to cele-brate the organization’s centennial.

The organization was founded by Juliette Gordon Lowe in Sa-vannah, Ga., on March 12, 1912.

Menards Opening InYankton Not Yet Set

While the Menards Mega Store is set to open in Yankton thisspring, an exact date has not been established yet, according to aspokesman for the home improvement retailer.

Jeff Abbott said the company is promoting the spring 2012opening until a more precise date is pinned down.

“We appreciate all the loyal Menards guests in the Yankton areawho have driven many miles to shop in our stores in Mitchell,Sioux Falls and Sioux City for many years,” he stated in an email tothe Press & Dakotan. “This beautiful new store is being built in ourlargest format with several great departments, a full-service lum-beryard, fabulous displays and a beautiful garden center. Buildingthis new store is another example of our strong commitment toprovide the best in home improvement goods and services in thisregion.”

Construction on the facility began last summer.The City of Yankton created a tax-increment finance district to

help with the infrastructure needs for the development on theproperty northeast of the Highway 81 and 31st Street intersection.

Menards operates 264 home improvement stores across theGreat Plains and Midwest.

2011 and was hospitalized forthe past 10 weeks starting atSanford Children’s Hospital inSioux Falls, SD and was then air-lifted to Amplatz Children’s Hos-pital at the University ofMinnesota in Minneapolis, MN.He received a bone marrowtransplant, receiving his sisterEmily’s bone marrow, on Febru-ary 22, 2012 and had begun en-grafting new healthy white cells.Our sweet boy died 9 days be-fore his 5th birthday when thedisease was too difficult for himto fight any longer.

There never was a moreloved nor lovable little boy thanour precious Isaac. His smilecould lighten up any room. Hehad a dry wit that broughtlaughter to his entire family. Heloved Jesus and enjoyed hear-ing stories about Him from hisfamily, at Sunday School and at

AWANA. He so enjoyed praisingJesus through his singing.
