By Karen Bennett

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD'S CRAFTSMANMany homes in our WhittierHistoric Neighborhood fallunder the title of``bungalows." The definition

of ``bungalow" will easily filla future article, but this arti-cle will focus on the Crafts-man bungalow that is foundhere in considerable num-bers.

The Arts & Crafts Movementwhich began in England inthe late 19th Century, wasembraced in the U.S.around 1900 where it cameto be expressed in variousdistinctive American formsin architecture and the dec-orative arts. The Arts &Crafts Movement represent-ed a philosophy rather thana specific style, but the ar-chitecture that it inspiredfound such fertile ground inCalifornia that a stylisticallydefinable Craftsman bunga-low flourished and was oftencalled a ``California Bunga-I ow -,,

The philosophy of the Arts &Crafts Movement, foundedon harmony with nature, healthful living, and the use

of simple materials, thebeauty of which would showforth in honest expressionand skilled workmanship, rejected the abundant orna-mentation that had beenprevalent in Victorianhomes. Characteristics ofthe Craftsman house includea low pitched roof extendingover a wide porch and overwide eaves below which ex-posed beams and rafter tailshonestly express structure;many windows, oftengrouped together, a massivefront door, and a generalfeeling of horizonality bywhich the house seemed togrow out of the ground.Porch roofs were often sup-ported on sloping``elephantine" posts and de-

tails such as porch lightsand door hardware weresimple yet sturdy. Thehouses were most of-ten clad in wood sidingor shingles left naturaland oiled or sidingpainted in earth tones, signaling the harmonyof the house and itsinhabitants with na-ture.

ARCHITECTURETwo excellent examples ofthe Craftsman-style archi-tecture in our neighborhoodare located at 6222 PainterAvenue and 6317 Bright Av-enue.

BACK IN THE KORNER

Neighbors requested them andWHNA listened! Back by popu-lar demand, WHNA is reprintingKaren Bennett's informativearticles on the architecturalstyles prevalent in our area.Hopefully revisiting these arti-cles will increase your apprecia-tion for the neighborhood, while also serv.Ing as a refer-ence guide to help you makeappropriate maintenance andrepair choices for your historichome.

ALLEY SAFETYThere are things we can all do to keep non-residents from loitering inour alleys. Installing motion detection lighting and security cameras areobvious deterrents, but have you considered eliminating the things thatare attracting recyclers, vagrants, and other unwanted visitors?

If it's not Trash Pick-Up Day,Remove Refuse and Recycling Containers!

Besides being unsightly, trash containers provide excellent hiding placesfor thugs, shelter for vagrants, and sources of ``treasure" for recyclingbuffs.

According to City Ordinance 8.12.132 (Placement of Containers-Automated Refuse Collection Program), all waste and reeycling contain-ers should be stored on private property once they are emptied. ``Thesecontainers shall not be placed within the right-of-way of an alley."

I would further suggest eliminating the attraction altogether by movingthe containers to an out-of-sight location, like behir`d a fence or hedge. As the saying goes ... out of Sight, out of mind.

Report people dumping trash in your alley to theWhittler Police Department (562) 567-9200
