The St. Mary’s girl’s basketball team has won four of their last five games bringing their record to 7-2.

On January 26, Mary Peters led a balanced attack that saw seven players score in a home victory over Arlington. Anna Restino and Alice Hayden led the way with eight points each as the Eagles defeated Manchester on January 30. In the season’s most exciting contest so far, the Eagles fell to the undefeated Mt. Anthony by two points. In that game, Grace Delurey’s team-high fourteen points included four three-pointers, highlighting a spirited comeback.

Alice Hayden scored 20 points in con-secutive games leading the Eagles to vic-tories over Dorset and Manchester.

Adding to the total team effort in these past games are eighth graders Nicole St. Onge, Julia Baker and Rachel Jones and seventh graders Olivia Schneider and Ashley St. Onge.

Career and Internship Fairat Southern Vermont College

Southern Vermont College in Bennington will host its annual Spring Career and Internship Fair on Tuesday, March 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Field House on campus. The event is open to the general public, students from other area colleges and current students and alumni from Southern Vermont College.

Air Force Airman Devin D. Reilly has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of train-ing, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marks-manship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who com-plete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the brother of Briana Reilly of Centerlake Way, Argyle, N.Y.

The airman is a 2007 graduate of Argyle High School.

Winter Break Programs at Grafton Lakes State Park

Grafton Lakes State Park will offer three programs over winter break for families. Nature Detectives, a program on animal tracking, will be held on February 18 from 10-11:30 a.m. Winter Survival Skills will be on Friday, February 20 from 1-2:30 p.m.

The snowshoe hike will take families out around Shaver Pond for a 3k hike, where signs of porcupine, deer and past beaver activity may be seen. The trail is moderate, but due to its length it is best for physically active, school age children only. Rentals are included as part of the pro-gram fee, and are available from the Park Office where the class meets at 10 a.m. Please call Park Office to pre-register at 279-1155, because rentals are limited. The cost is $2/child or $5/family.

The Nature Detectives program is appropriate for kids ages 4-10. Children will make their own plaster cast of an animal track, learn the basics of tracking, and explore the trails left by some of the Park’s wild inhabitants on a short hike. We’ll look closely for signs of local animals and we guarantee the group will find many. The program will meet at the Park Office, and the cost is $2/child or $5/family. Snowshoe rentals are included in the cost of the program. Warm layers are highly recom-mended.

The Winter Survival program is appropriate for older children, approximately 8-15, as it will offer ideas on how to keep safe in an outdoor survival situation. We’ll talk about how wild animals survive wintry conditions, enjoy a warm fire outside, and have the chance to practice some survival skills. Waterproof and warm layers are highly recommended for this program, held Friday, February 20, from 1-2:30 p.m. at Shaver Nature Center, 194 Shaver Pond Rd. in Grafton, NY. Please pre-register for by Thursday, February 19.

Snowshoe rentals are available from the Park Office all winter. Call ahead for availability. Please be advised that only the Winter Entrance on North Long Pond Road, is in use at this time, and that the Main Park Entrance is closed until Spring. Battenkill Conservancy’s Eagle WatchMeet with Battenkill Conservancy’s member Ron Renoni for an

eagle watch excursion along the Battenkill and Hudson Valleys on Saturday, March 7. Meet at 10 a.m. in the outer parking lot at the K-Mart in Greenwich, NY. Dress in warm non-cotton layers and bring binocu-lars and bird field guides if you have them. You may also want to bring a light lunch, as the group will be exploring during the lunch hour. The event is free of charge.

The focus of this outing is to see eagles, ideally on the Battenkiill or Hudson Valley. Since at least five eagles and as many as eight have been spotted wintering near the Stewart Bridge Reservoir on the Sacandaga, taking this hour long ride might prove to be well worth your while even if only to have a better chance of observing them in the wild. Return to the K-Mart parking lot from the Stewart Reservoir at approximately 2 p.m.

Harlem Rockets in ArlingtonThe Harlem Rockets Comedy Basketball team will take on the

Arlington Dream Team in an exhibition match, Monday, March 9, at 7 p.m. in the Arlington Memorial High School gymnasium. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door to benefit the Mack Attack AAU Girls’ Basketball team. Tickets can be purchased at the AMHS Guidance Office or the Fisher Elementary Main Office.

For years the Harlem Rockets, a group of highly talented former col-lege and professional basketball players, have been thrilling fans with their unique combination of basketball skills, zany comedy and audi-ence participation. Having played over 2,300 games in 14 years without a single defeat, the Harlem Rockets offer something for everyone to enjoy. There will be plenty of laughs as well as “ball-handling wizardry” and “high flying dunks.”

Adding even more enthusiasm to the event are the Harlem Rockets’ opponents. The Arlington Dream Team consists of well-known area basketball players. Scheduled to play against the Harlem Rockets are Charlie Cummings, Eric Green, Greg Gunther, Kris Hoyt, Brian Lacoste, John Macksey, Todd Ordway, Jamie Paustian, Jeremy Pratico,

Scott Sheldon, John Rogers, Reg Trayah, Mike Welther and Todd Wilkins.

The Harlem Rockets incor-porate the audience, especially children, into the show and are always available to meet the fans and give autographs at halftime and after the game.

Mardi Gras in Hoosick FallsThe fourth gala Mardi Gras celebration will be held on Friday,

February 20 (snow date: Saturday, February 21), at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall, Hoosick Falls. You will enjoy entertainment by Richard Cherry on the piano, David Sutton and others lending their singing voices, humorous skits, and Joe Shaw emceeing the event.

A buffet will offer roast turkey, roast ham, roast beef, potatoes, salads, rolls and dessert, with a cash bar. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program offers free tax help if you qualify. This program is for families and individuals with income below $41,000.

Trained community volunteers can help you with special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly for which you may qualify. In addition to free tax return prepara-tion assistance, sites also offer free electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper – even faster if you have your refund deposited directly into your bank account.

The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income

(generally, $42,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing. In Hoosick Falls the site is located at the Hoosick Area Church Association at 26 Lower John Street. The office is open during February on Thursday evenings from 6-10 and Saturday from 10-3, and in March and April on Saturdays from 10-1. Walkins are accepted, however appointments are recommended. Roast Beef Dinner in TomhannockThe Tomhannock United Methodist Church is offering a roast beef

Roast Beef Dinner in CossayunaThe Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will be putting

on a roast beef dinner, Saturday, February 21 from 4-7 p.m. Dinner will include seasoned roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, dessert, and drinks. The price for this dinner will be $9 for 11 years and older, $4 for children 5-10 years, and under 5 is free. Kayla Hewitt of Bennington Named to Provost List at SVC

Kayla Hewitt of Bennington has been named to the Provost List for the fall semester at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vt. The Provost List recognizes full-time students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 during the semester.

Hewitt is majoring in Radiologic Technology. She is also employed at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington.

Hewitt is a graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School. She is the daughter of Gary and Terri Hewitt of Bennington.

Renee Bouchard Reception at UU Fellowship

On Friday, February 27, from 5-8 p.m., Bennington artist Renee Bouchard will host a reception for her paintings currently on exhibit at the UU Fellowship of Bennington, 108 School Street, in downtown Bennington. Treat yourself to a colorful exhibit, refreshments, and a short artist talk.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maine College of Art, Renee has exhibited in Vermont, Maine, and Florida, and has won awards and residencies for her work. The paintings represented here cover three phases of work over the past 5 years: Vibrant and energetic “en plein air” paintings of local landscape; more abstract paintings motivated by color interaction and by concept; and abstract paintings which incor-porate 3-dimensional elements and which launched her current focus on sculptural work.

Renee Bouchard’s paintings will be on display at the UU Fellowship through March. Sunday morning services begin at 10 a.m. and the public is welcome.

From my Corner— Susan J. Coons

...breakfast...Last Friday I had an early

morning hunger pang on the way to work. It was only 8:30, but boy was I hungry! I had eaten light the night before (just a few pota-to chips, actually, which I know isn’t good for you). I was pictur-ing a ‘Donna Breakfast’ while I was driving. My friend goes all out with bacon, eggs, toast, jelly or jam, and coffee. But she seems to work it off when she takes a hearty, brisk walk every after-noon, returning during these bitter cold days, with rosy red cheeks and a smile.

I kept thinking about that breakfast...how I could really chomp into it! My mother made fried eggs and bacon for my step-father every day of his life. He inherited a terrible cholesterol problem from his parents. The fried eggs were one thing, but, the way they were fried is awful.She broke the egg in the pan, and, using the spatula, splashed bacon grease over the top of the egg to cook it. Dad was getting a double dose of fat every morning!

There were times when money was tight when I was a kid, and if there was nothing else in the house to eat for supper, my mom would fix breakfast! We ate eggs and pancakes. Nothing was ‘instant’, and the pancakes were always light and fluffy. If bacon was unavailable, the ‘meat’ por-tion of our meal was Spam.

I never take the time for breakfast, which makes me very hungry by around 10 a.m. That’s when I eat my lunch, usually consisting of left-overs from the night before. I have favorite left-overs: meatloaf (makes a great sandwich); enchiladas; Mexican casserole; scalloped potatoes and ham; anything Asian or Polynesian; cold chicken; and medium rare roast beef (another great sandwich with mayo and hot horseradish on sour dough bread!).

I can’t seem to get into a new habit of eating breakfast, and old habits are hard to break. If I could just sit down and eat a bowl of cereal, I know it would be good for me. Like right now, it’s 3:40 on Sunday afternoon. Today I’ve eaten two frozen waffles (sorta like cardboard with a little butter and powdered sugar), and a toast-ed cheese sandwich. My supper is in the planning stages...a panko breaded boneless pork cutlet, egg foo yung and beef gravy.

If I do this right, I’ll have enough left over to make anoth-er egg foo yung for breakfast tomorrow. After all, it’s only eggs and bean sprouts fried, topped with brown gravy! Makes a great breakfast! Supper, breakfast, who cares?! What’s the diff?

St. Peter’s EcoTeam Plans for 2009 Community Gardening Season

Despite relentless win-ter weather, gardeners on the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church EcoTeam are already look-ing through seed catalogs and scheming how to top last year’s garden output. In addition, sev-eral new ideas such as gardening seminars and children’s programs have been proposed and may go beyond the theme of “Local Food” to include other vital eco-logical issues. The EcoTeam will meet monthly before the garden kicks off in May and will host an informational table during

St. Peter’s EcoTeam will meet in the Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Church, 200 Pleasant St., Bennington, at 11:30 a.m. on the following Sundays from February to April: Sunday, March 15 - Gardening/Local Food focus; Sunday, April 19 - Seed Exchange and program/event updates.

In 2008, more than 20 parish-ioners along with people from the wider Bennington commu-nity created a community garden on the east side of the church’s parish hall by building four raised garden beds and a system for natural composting. St. Peter’s EcoTeam supplied fresh garden produce to EcoTeam members who cared for the garden dur-

Hair Of The Dog Concert at St. Mary’s Academy

St. Mary’s Academy of Hoosick Falls is pleased to announce that Hair Of The Dog will be performing their unique blend of Celtic Folk/Rock on Friday evening, March 20 at the school. Doors will open at 6:30 and the show begins at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 and are on sale now. St. Mary’s is also very excited to announce that Magic 100.9 Morning show hosts Jay and Ben will emcee this awesome event.

Hair Of The Dog’s high energy sound, smooth four part harmonies and tight instrumental attack has made them one of the top Irish acts in the world. They have shared the stage with many other well known Celtic groups such as The Clancy Brothers, The Wolfe Tones, Cherish The Ladies, Donal Lunny’s Coolfin, Eileen Ivers and the Immigrant Soul, Black 47, Gaelic Storm, Solas, Seven Nations, The Prodigals, Off Kilter and Glengarry Bhoys. Lecture on Skills for Success from a Business ‘Visionary’

Offered at Southern Vermont College What are the secrets to success in any business? It’s all about people

and leadership skills, according to Frederic Poses, retired Chairman and CEO of American Standard. Poses will offer thoughts on mastering these skills in his talk, “Success is Not a Game of Solitaire,” at Southern Vermont College on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 2:30 p.m. in the Everett Theatre. This lecture, part of SVC’s Lessons of Leadership series, is free and open to the public.

“Fred Poses has successfully led two major companies and sits on the board of several others,” said SVC President Dr. Karen Gross. “He is both a visionary in leading people and an inspiring speaker, and we are thrilled to host him at SVC.”

Poses’ talk will focus on the leadership skills required for success. He will discuss how to create and share a compelling vision and agenda for organizations and businesses, how to enable people to execute their vision effectively, and how to recognize and reward success.

Poses retired from American Standard Companies, an $11-billion global company with 60,000 employees, when Trane, the largest and remaining air conditioning business of the company, was acquired by Ingersoll Rand in June 2008.

Poses, a long-time colleague of Dr. Gross, was involved in the plan-ning and execution of the school’s new business entrepreneurship program, Build the Enterprise (BTE), which starts this spring semester. The new program enables undergraduates the chance to problem solve real-life business solutions as well as start, run and build their own busi-ness, Poses said. Poses will also be a guest lecturer in some SVC classes while he is on campus.

Before joining AlliedSignal, Poses spent two years in Peru with the Peace Corps. He holds a B.B.A. from New York University. He currently serves as the non-executive chairman of the board of Tyco Electronics and as a director for Centex Corporation and Raytheon Company.

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will celebrate the achieve-ments of women artists in conjunction with the Berkshires-wide recognition of International Women’s Day and its 2009 theme, “The Power of Women in the Arts.” Thirteen prints, drawings, and photographs created by women will be featured in the exhibition Women’s Work on view February 21 through April 19. The lectures “Women at the Clark,” on March 11, and “Have There Really Been No Great Women Artists?” on March 25, both at 7 p.m., exam-ine the Clark’s co-founder Francine, the women artists represented in the Clark’s collection, and feminist art his-tory. Admission to the galleries and lec-tures is free.

Selected from the Clark’s collection of over 5,000 works on paper, Women’s Work gives the public an opportunity to celebrate women artists in the Clark’s collection. Eight artists represent four countries and their work spans 130 years. “Women at the Clark,” a lecture by assistant curator of education Danielle Steinmann on March 11, will highlight the Clark’s co-founder Francine Clary Clark and discuss great women artists in the Clark’s collection, including Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, and Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun. Steinmann will also give a preview of the sum-mer 2009 exhibition, which features the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, who has fascinated critics, scholars, and art lovers alike since she burst onto the New York art scene in the early 1900s.

Associate curator of European art Sarah Lees will broach the ques-tion “Have There Really Been No Great Women Artists?” on March 25, bringing feminist art historical criticism into the present day. In 1971, the now-prominent art historian Linda Nochlin published an essay with the provocative title “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” Under what conditions, she asked, can any artist produce art that comes to be recognized as “great”? This lecture will revisit the question in order to explore how it was answered then, how it might be answered today, and why the question itself is still powerful.

The First Annual Berkshire Festival of Women in the Arts will feature more than sixty events at thirty venues that will include film screenings, exhibitions, performances, talks, and more throughout the Berkshires during the month of March. Presented by The Women’s

Times, the festival will include diverse programming that ranges from the his-torical to contemporary, traditional to radical, political to apolitical. Venues run the spectrum from the Berkshires’ most established cultural organizations to new and improvised locations. There are opportunities for festival-goers to examine the role of women in the arts, celebrate the achievements of women artists, or simply enjoy a diverse cross section of artistic work. Ruth W. Horn Ruth W. Horn, age 89, a resi-

dent of Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vermont, died on Monday eve-ning, February 10, 2009 follow-ing a long illness.

She was born in Hoosick Falls, New York, on November 23, 1919, and was the daugh-ter of the late Charles and Verna

(Moon) Woodard. She was raised in Bennington and attended local schools. Ruth is a graduate of Bennington High School in the class of 1938.

She married Raymond J. Horn on July 13, 1939 in Bennington, Mr. Horn died on May 16, 2005.

She has been a homemaker, nurse, and loving mother for many years.

Ruth was a member of the

Second Congregational Church in Bennington.

Survivors include two sons; Randal J. Horn and his wife Mary, of Bennington; her son Delton Horn of Phoenix, AZ; and one daughter, Judith Neubecker of Woodhaven, MI. Ruth leaves four grandchildren: Emily Horn, Edward Bray, Karen Horn, and David Osborn. She has two sis-ters: Edna Prouty of Bennington, and Rose Austin of Moretown, Vermont. She is predeceased by six siblings: Paul Woodard, Donald Woodard, Delton Woodard, Louise Berbig, Helen Garvey and Norma Austin.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Dorothy C. McGuireDorothy C. McGuire, a long-

time resident of Greenwich Street Extension, entered into eternal rest on February 12, 2009.

Born on June 5, 1907 she led a long and fulfilling life. Her par-ents were the late Timothy and Margaret (Fitzgerald) McGinnis. She attended North Bennington Grammar and High School.

On July 4, 1939 she married George F. McGuire at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. Mr. McGuire died January 7, 1974. Mrs. McGuire was a devout communicant of St. John the Baptist Church and an active member of St. John’s Sodality. In earlier years she was involved in numerous commu-nity organizations.

She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends who were her greatest joy in life. She treasured her Irish heri-tage and enjoyed her travels to County Kerry.

Mrs. McGuire is survived by two children: Michael J. McGuire (Shirley) of North Bennington, and Margaret Galvin (John) of Hoosick Falls, NY; six grandchil-dren, several great-grandchil-dren, nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers: B. Joseph McGinnis and John R. McGinnis.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the caring staff at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, and to Reverend Michael Demasi.

The funeral will be held from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington on Monday, February 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

At Mrs. McGuire’s request there will be no calling hours.

Local Baker Takes the CakeLocal baker Mary Ellen Devlin wins award at area Cake show. She

took part in the Quandt’s Food Service Bakery and Ice Cream Show. The show was held at the Italian American Club, on Western Avenue in Albany, NY, last Monday.

Along with about twenty other competitors Devlin was fighting for Best Taste, Best Design, and Most Creative cake. She was awarded the prize for Most Creative Cake of the show. It was for her “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” themed birthday cake. Although, she had made this cake once before, it still took over five hours for her to create.

Mary Ellen has been baking professionally for the past ten years at Willy’s Variety Bakery, on Gage Street and as a hobby since she was a kid. To see her award winning cake and a full portfolio of her work you can visit her at the Bakery. She will also be in attendance at the Bennington Museum’s Bridal Fair, Sunday February 22, from noon-5p.m. She does a wide variety of cakes for any occasion or any size of party.
